About the Author
Carolyn Burke has the rare ability to take what is currently known and apply it to classroom instruction. A former first-grade teacher, Burke currently is Professor of Language Education at Indiana University and spends the bulk of her time teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in reading and writing education. She is well known for her work in miscue analysis and reading.

Jerome C. Harste is a well known author of children's books, such as It Didn't Frighten Me and My Icky Picky Sister (Willowisp Press). Harstes's research has focused on what young children know prior to coming to school. Together with Carolyn Burke and Virginia Woodward, their book Language Stories & Literacy Lessons (Heinemann) received the David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English by the National Council of Teachers of English in 1987.

Kathy Gnagey Short teaches courses in children's literature and curriculum at the University of Arizona. She continues to work with teacher study groups on a wide range of topics, including literature circles and curriculum as inquiry. She is coauthor of Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers, Second Edition (Heinemann, 1996), with Jerome Harste and Carolyn Burke, and coauthored Learning Together Through Inquiry with several contributors to this book.

Three Years Later, and This Still Ranks As The Best

I used this book while earning my Masters of Teaching in Early Childhood Education. It gives a superb presentation on how to put down the 1950s/60s style of teaching reading by using an investigative approach.

Mark Rich, a target himself, explains how this agenda has been ramped up in the post-9/11 terrorism-focused global society, but he provides extensive historical context as well as commentary from well-known researchers to support his argument.

Rich sets the scene with reference to the elite groups near the top of the control pyramid, e.g., transnationals, the private Federal Reserve, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Bilderbergers, and tax-exempt foundations with links to the Rothschilds and Rockefellers.

He then examines how these groups have had their way, e.g., deliberately creating the Great Depression, funding Nazis, and rewriting history via their compliant allies in the media and academia.

In the second section, Rich homes in on the structure, tactics, and purpose of this "Hidden Evil" and how informants are co-opted to serve it. As well as sophisticated mind-control and "non-lethal" technology being used, more basic techniques such as stalking, mobbing, brighting, blacklisting, character assassination and noise campaigns are employed to destabalise and alienate the targeted victim.

This book is a must read! Innocent Americans are being stalked and terrorized by stalking groups set up by the US Government's national security agencies. The persecution is completely unjustified under the false pretense of the "war on terror" or other lies told about the victim. Local police watch groups are being unleashed to go after American citizens that have done nothing wrong and are not part of any type of terrorist activity at all. The victims are harassed 24/7 with a total psychological warfare campaign waged against them or even worse with being attacked with energy weapons. These both equate to torture with people being murdered and systematically destroyed. Its sad how far this country has fallen from grace. I can vouch for the information about the stalking being 100% true because I have been a victim of it for over three years now.

This book is well thought out and understandable. It links all the pieces together providing a picture to the reader on how government's torture matrix really works. This is a must read for anyone that has experienced a global systematic smear campaign or character assassination. I am a bright creative woman with a strong sense of right and wrong. I have become a victim of community mobbing and stalking. I have no history of crime and I have never hurt anyone in my life yet everyone that I come into contact with treats me like I'm a criminal. My mobbing began when I spoke up for a local politician! I had no idea that I was in the presence of die hard psychopaths that could wreak havoc in my life.

Good overcomes evil - it always has and always will. Innocent people are being victimized by the wealthy elite and this book shows you how it's being done.

If you have been recruited to join a COMMUNITY WATCH GROUP or if you have been asked by your employer to "play games with someone" and you go along with it - just accept the fact that you are a psychopath.

And for anyone that associates this world wide problem with paranoia or schizophrenia is completely wrong. I am a very smart and psychologically sound woman and if this could happen to me it can happen to anyone.

Gitty Daneshvari was born in the creepy crawly yet ever so sunny city of Los Fangeles. As a young ghoul she was loquacious, curious, and freakishly fearful. Worried about everything from matted fur to aliens invading to getting stuck in an elevator, her diverse range of phobias was a most burdensome flaw. However, as she grew up and faced her fears, Gitty found they were the perfect inspiration for her defrightful middle grade series School of Fear.

Gitty currently lives in New Volt City with her spooktacularly smelly English Bulldog Harriet.

This book, "When is Marriage Null" is an English translation of a 1998 Italian book of journal articles fleshing out the canonical grounds of marriage nullity. The author, Fr. Paolo Bianchi, sought to implement the particular law of the Italian Episcopal Conference in reference to educating the parochial "first responders" in facilitating the examination of non-superficial indications or legitimate grounds regarding the case of the potential plaintiff seeking a declaration of nullity prior to approaching a diocesan tribunal. The Italian Bishop's Conference in 1990 promulgated a decree in which article 56 of said decree wished to promote the study or cursory examination of the various grounds of marriage nullity by those who may not be proficiently versed in canon law (i.e., the parish pastors).

The book is absolutely beautiful in the breakdown and explanation of the canonical jurisprudence. It is a literal goldmine of valuable information, not to mention the exquisite ability of the author to explain so eloquently the nature of invalidity. Wow! This is one of the best books on this topic that I have ever read and I have read a great many. "When is Marriage Null" is canonical caviar, an academic treatise that will most certainly stimulate the canonist who is interested in the field of marriage jurisprudence. Hands down, the finest work I have ever read.

My two favorite areas of marriage law are canons 1097 (error) and 1095 (incapacity). Fr. Paolo dedicates over 75 pages (out of 315) to these two areas alone. He brilliantly explains the subjects so well (with real case examples) that I am struggling to see how this book can be useful for the non-canonist. I do, somewhat, believe that it can be an advantage for the non-canonist, but only up to a certain point. This book is the real deal and a gigantic treat for the lover of canon law. It is not like other books that you may stumble upon from time to time that seek to bring the Church's law into the mainstream arena, no, this book is very different. Pure gold! I love it!!!!!

Two stories to warm your panties and three to soak them!

This was a fun collection. The Boss, the Bride, and the Cuckold was glorious in its hot-wife orgiastic delights, but didn't push hubby in the direction I crave. Instead of being forced to fluff and clean, he merely watches and then slips into some sloppy seconds. The World's Biggest Cuckold, on the other hand, was exactly what I was hungry for. I loved the progression of their relationship, the secrets that hubby discovers, and the various friends and family he's cuckolded by. Most of all, though, I loved the scenes where he describes his first time cleaning a black member, his first time being gagged by a gallon of sperm, and his first experience being penetrated at both ends.

The Cum Sl8t and the Cuckold wasn't quite as much fun for me, being told from the wife's perspective, but I do so love a hubby who arranges a gangbang just so he can slurp cum from his wife's holes! The Sex Master more than made up for that, though, with a submissive sissy who doesn't just get cuckolded by his wife, but dominated by her entire family. The scene where hubby sucks off his father-in-law while his mother-in-law watches . . . well, it nearly sent me over the top! Finally, we have The Nympho and the Cuckold, another hot story to be experience from the wife's perspective, but with not nearly enough humiliation or submission from hubby for my tastes.

I am delighted with the text and look forward to assigning it to my students. I appreciate the non-controversial approach Muckle takes towards some of the key issues in contemporary Aboriginal/Native American and dominant culture relations. As a First Nations scholar, I have the luxury of being more assertive about my positions and this text will be important in establishing a baseline position from which to engage students in debating opposing positions. There are many other things to recommend this book: the anthropological perspective, the concise approach, the primary documents included in the Appendix, but what I most appreciate is the resistance to using the culture area approach as the main organizing feature. I have been using a similar thematic approach, and this text is a welcome supplement to the more critical texts I use in my classes. Indigenous Peoples of North America will be a handy reference for undergraduates seeking to understand key concepts in anthropology and First Nations/Native American Studies. It will also serve as a good starting point for undertaking additional research in this critical area of study. (Bernard Perley, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee)

True Foods, needs a little help before 2nd edition

Andrew Weil is a healthy life-style guru, and I have purchased several of his books. It's clear to me that several of the reviewers have been given complimentary copies of the book to review and they simply proceeded to write a book report without having made any of the recipes. Often times, as in this case, the recipes for a restaurant quantities are not accurately translated for home use. For a seasoned pro, this may not be a problem. However, if you plan on giving this gift to a beginning cook, they may have problems with it. I have made 12 recipes so far, and the wonderful part about most of them is the abundant use of fresh whole foods, and the frugal use of fats, salt and sugar.

If I had edited the book in advance, I would have advised that a "crustless quiche" is more commonly known as frittata on page 25. I would suggest you omit the baking soda in the Carrot-Parsnip-Zucchini Bread on page 26,and add 1 Tablespoon of baking powder instead. One medium carrot and one medium parsnip and one small zucchini does not mean anything. I used 4 cups total shredded vegetables. That works. Also,you must line your bread pans with paper if you are using olive oil instead of butter to keep the bread from sticking. Or use non-stick pans.

The Fattoush Salad on page 70 is a winner and will appeal to almost everyone. The Moroccan Chicken Salad on page 87 is the best low fat version of chicken salad you will ever find. You will never guess that it has so little mayonnaise! The Sweet Potato-Poblano Soup is wonderful but 3 quarts of water to 5 vegetables has got to be an error. If you double the amount of vegetables you will be fine, otherwise you will end up with a lot of extra broth and nothing like the photograph!

The Bison Chili on page 110 is excellent, with a flavor profile enhanced by a wide array of herbs, spices, and chocolate! The Miso-Marinated Black Cod on page 132 was not worth all the trouble when the fresh fish would have tasted better if it were naked! I would only mask the fish if it were not perfectly fresh.

The Chicken Enchiladas on page 145 were fabulous. The fresh tomatillo salsa is easy and incredibly delicious. You may want to double the recipe and make a blender full. The recipe neglected to tell you what to do with the corn after you browned it, but assumes you will figure it out. Contrary to the recipe you will need 3/4 cup of salsa, not 1/4 for the bottom of the pan, which should be 9 X 12 since they didn't specify. And you will have plenty of filling for 12 6" tortillas, not just 6 as the recipe reads.

The photography is beautiful but doesn't always relate to the recipe. Why show steel cut oats next to a recipe for granola that calls for old-fashioned rolled oats?

"True Foods", is evidence that Andrew Weil's recipes have evolved to the point where there is absolutely no sacrificing flavor for health. True Food will introduce you to new techniques, new food combinations, and new ingredients. That's a big accomplishment for any cookbook!

A mixed bag of pretty-darned-cool and "...but will I ever make this?"

When I was offered a copy of this cookbook, I jumped at the chance to review it. After all, I've been a Health Food Person since the 80s, when "eating healthy" meant carrot loaf and adding a tablespoon of brewer's yeast to everything. (Thankfully, we all got better at it.) True Food's goals of seasonable and sustainable align with my own, too.

Plus, the True Food restaurants are near me, here in Scottsdale. I've been to them several times, and would probably have said Yes to the cookbook just for the recipes for their drinks. (There's a nonalcoholic ginger-fizz drink sweetened with agave that I really like.) The problem is: I stopped going to the restaurant because they use olive oil a bit too much; since my husband is extremely allergic to it (not YOUR problem), we get tired of playing 20 Questions with the wait staff. But that made me more enthusiastic about the cookbook, since obviously at home I can use any oil I want.

I've spent several weeks with this cookbook and... I have mixed feelings. I really like the goals it sets, but too few of the recipes make me say, "Yum, let's make that for dinner tonight!" Either they are fussy, or they use ingredients that are hard to find even for this Scottsdale foodie. (Why yes, I *DO* do all my shopping at Whole Foods and gourmet markets.) I appreciate cookbooks that introduce me to new ingredients, such as sea buckthorn and samphire, but if *I* can't find them, they may be out of reach for you.

Plus, Dr. Weil, who inspired the restaurant, is well known for his own dietary recommendations, some of which don't match mine. Some do: smaller portions of seasonal, organic ingredients; less emphasis on a big slab of moo (more fish, heavy on the veggies and grain). He advises to cut back on sweets and eat smaller portions (which I do, my chocolate reputation notwithstanding: Give me one perfect chocolate truffle, not a pound of M&Ms) but he doesn't make THAT big of a distinction between types of sugar. I've found, purely for myself, that I'm fine with agave, honey, maple syrup, but refined sugars are best left to once-in-a-great while.

The bottom line, though: Do I want to cook these recipes? Do YOU?

I usually try to cook two or three dishes from a cookbook before offering an opinion. As it turns out, I made only one so far, and it turned out quite well. The curried cauliflower soup is vegan, out-of-the-ordinary, and delicious. In addition to the cauliflower and curry powder, it uses a third of a cup of raw cashews, a can of coconut milk, and a few more spices (turmeric, cumin, and a touch of cinnamon). It was fast enough to put together for a weeknight meal, and reheated easily for lunch. (Come to think of it, it's also rather frugal.) I still haven't made the drink that had made me shout YES to the review offer, but it'll happen: Basically it's soda water, fresh lime juice, agave nectar (you can find that in most health food stores, even one of the warehouse stores occasionally), and pulverized ginger juice (e.g. blend fresh ginger with water, strain). (Several of the drinks are alcoholic, if that's more your speed, such as a tamarind margarita, or the Peacemaker with honey, black tea, lemon juice, rye whiskey, and Averna liqueur.)

I have bookmarks in several more recipes, but they've been stuck in the "Maybe I'll get around to it" category. Tofu curry with cauliflower, rice noodles, and cashews, for instance. Miso-marinated black cod, which must wait for me to see that fish in the store. Roasted butternut squash, apple, and pomegranate salad with balsamic vinaigrette.

But some are suitable only for a leisurely afternoon puttering in the kitchen. The summer vegetable casserole was briefly a candidate for the Thanksgiving table (we have a vegetarian guest every year and cater to his needs... I'm such a nice friend), with layers of an eggplant relish, fennel braised in orange juice and wine, squash and tomato, and a Parmesan-bread crumb topping. Others just don't appeal to me (sorry, I'm not a kale girl). And then, of course, there's the challenge of finding ingredients; I can get halloumi nearby but I'm not going to bet that's the case for you.

One thing I would like, given the health-conscious premise for this cookbook, is nutritional information for each recipe. Dr Weil may not count calories, carbs, etc., but some people -- including many of the health-conscious people who'll be drawn to this cookbook -- do.

Still, I _like_ this cookbook. I appreciate its sensibilities, even if I don't use it very often. If you have a good source of organic produce and some exotic ingredients, it might be just the ticket for you.

A flexitarian delight and then some

Sam Fox is a restaurateur. Michael Stebner is an executive chef and of course Andrew Weil is a legendary health guru with international tastes and a surprising expertise in the kitchen. What they've done together aside from writing this book is found and operate True Food Kitchens, a growing chain of restaurants where the emphasis is on food that is (as in the subtitle of this book) "Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure."

What this means can be discerned by going over the recipes in the book. This is not a vegan or even a vegetarian cuisine. This is an international cuisine fit for an epicurean flexitarian! The emphasis is on the fresh, bold, and organic with little meat, some chicken and a bit more fish. Many of the recipes are inspired by Weil's concept of the "Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid." There's a color photo of the "pyramid" in all its glory on page 46--no words, just the foods themselves. At the apex is chocolate (!) followed by red wine, food supplements, spices like ginger and chiles, and foods like fish, beans, avocados, mushrooms, veggies and fruits, etc. (You can see the labeled pyramid at Dr. Weil's website.) At the base of the pyramid which represents foods that should form the bulk of our diet are the veggies and fruits.

Weil says that he used the Mediterranean diet as a template in his design of the pyramid. He explains that these foods and not the highly processed foods found in the stores and in most restaurants lead to less inflammation in the body and to a healthy life style. The cuisine (I'd call it an international cuisine based on healthy food choices), Weil writes, "includes fewer foods of animal origin, except for fish and high-quality dairy products like yogurt and natural cheeses." (p. 47)

Yes, this is the middle way of moderation between veganism and bacon-corn syrup gluttony (if you will). Vegetarians are not going to be thrilled and vegans are going to be offended. But there are recipes for vegans dishes (e.g., Butternut Squash-Apple Soup with a cashew base on page 97) in contrast to, well, the recipe for a "Bison Umami Burger" on page 140.

Dr. Weil doesn't eat beef but believes that bison is a healthy substitute. I would say, perhaps--at least for now until and if it becomes popular, and then the food producers will make it as unhealthy as commercially produced beef. There's a recipe for the (vegan) "Umami Sauce" on page 236. Key ingredients are tamari, nutritional yeast and garlic.

I am writing this before dinner and wow are the recipes making me hungry! This is the perfect cook book for me since I've long followed a similar diet and much prefer cooking at home with my choice of ingredients done my way to going out to eat. But compared to the authors of this book I'm just a chef's helper with a limited range. Weil, Fox and Stebner demonstrate a deep and abiding knowledge about and love for food. We're all foodies under the skin, but some like Weil are really in another league. I've read and reviewed several of Dr. Weil's books, always favorably and always with some reservations. I'll skip the reservations here (since they are few and insignificant) and just say that I am amazed at Weil's understanding of food and his vast experience. He has clearly spent a good portion of his life experiencing food, thinking about food, eating food and cooking food! (And yes I thought he was doing yoga.)

The book begins with an Introduction that is an interesting conversation about food and the restaurant business among Weil, Fox and Stebner. Next comes "The True Food Pantry," a list and description of somewhat unusual but characteristic ingredients, such as agave nectar, chiles, flax meal, tahini, etc. Then come the recipes in chapters entitled, "Breakfast," "Appetizers," "Salads," and so on to "Desserts" and "drinks." There are mini essays on such things as "True Whole Grains" (page 21) and chapter intros written by Weil or Stebner. The recipes are also introduced and/or commented upon by either Weil or Stebner identified by their initials.

The book is beautifully designed and edited, full of easy to read bits of information about food and diet. The full color photos of the foods are gorgeously mouth-watering.

--Well, okay, one reservation: this cuisine requires not just a love of food but the time and energy to go to good markets on almost a daily basis and to keep on hand (and fresh!) a number of specialty ingredients. I'm thinking of the pickled cucumbers, the umami sauce, the dashi sauce (requiring, e.g., kombu and bonito flakes) and a variety of chiles and of course fresh fruits and vegetables. The only way you can achieve this is to really immerse yourself in food and to love what you're doing. But I think the reward is well worth the effort because not only will you be eating healthier, you will find that you can eat reasonable amounts of delicious food with relish, and because you have spent that extra energy shopping and cooking, you will have help in keeping a healthy weight.

Favorite substitution: Kalamata olives for anchovies in the Vegetarian Caesar Dressing on page 233.

Favorite tip: When toasting nuts realize that they are still cooking after being removed from the heat source. So as a general rule, "once you can smell the nuts, they are done." (p. 243) I learned this the hard way with sesame seeds and foraged Digger Pine nuts.

In a nutshell, this is now easily my favorite cook book.
