Braving Brando!

An interesting and intellectual read. It focused more on the man than the myths. Was I disappointed? Not really. It showed me the fine line between his genius and his questionable sanity. I would very much liked to have met and interacted with him. What an enigma! What an actor!

Brando as believeable guy.

Very well written and intimate portrait without making too many wild guesses as to what could have motivated the person who was Marlon. He was clearly unusual in his time and genuinely smart and funny. But also amoral and pompous and full of himself like most actors anywhere. Like many famous people he was in the right place at the right time and was very well suited for the role. It was something he came to embody that wasn't forced but was hard to find sympathetic.

As a scuba diver of almost 30 years experience and something of an expert on "shipwrecks," I have visited a small number of Destroyer wrecks over the years. Just as soon as this book arrived on my desk, therefore, I went straight to one very specific ship that is well known to me. I found she was portrayed by a photograph I had not seen before and my first reaction was to say to myself "so that's what I was looking at."

"Destroyers of World War Two - An International Encyclopaedia" is a large soft-back book measuring 9½" x 9½" containing over 300 pages packed with solid information about each type of ship laid out country-by-country. If you want to know anything about a Destroyer from WW2 - then that information is right here.

Commencing with an informative introduction in which the author explains the origins of the Destroyer and it's brief history up to the end of WW2, we then find the navies from that period laid out alphabetically from Argentina to Yugoslavia. Within each of these countries, their Destroyer fleets are then listed by type of vessel with full specifications and an illustration. Each country is then neatly finished off with the details of any ships which were either captured or transferred from elsewhere.

This is a work of reference will which stand the test of time. It is a scholarly work and extremely well illustrated throughout - with at least one image on every page. Though previously published in 1988, I am sure there will be plenty of people who missed this book first time around and who are now only too pleased of the opportunity to purchase once again. I know I was.

A good effort

Destroyers of World War Two : An International Encyclopedia is an excellent effort by an author whose work has often been marred by factual errors. The information contained in this volume is for the most part correct and most of the photos are different enough from other reference books. All particulars on destroyers of the various nations during World War 2 are listed here, including the ships of combatant and neutral nations. Whitley's definition of 'destroyer' is rather loose, as it does include fleet torpedo boats of over 200 tons, but essentially any vessel armed with torpedos and powered by steam or diesel propulsion and able to operate with major fleet combatatants is considered a destroyer in this book: therefore the US Navy destroyer escorts, which could be categorized as frigates under a different classification system, are included in this volume. The inclusion of the destroyers of neutral nations is welcome since much of this information is not available elsewhere.
As a reference, this is a pretty useful book but the drawings are not the book's high point. The poor drawings are a feature of all the books of the series. As I have an older edition, I assume this reprint is pretty much the same; however it is good to see this book back in print. All we need is for the submarine encyclopedia to be reprinted for the entire series to be complete.

What the doctor ordered

There are times when you want to know the number of rivets on a gun shield, or the ship's exact position at the moment of your birth, or the skipper's wife's maiden name.... But most of the time, all you want is something that gives you the important numbers and features in an easily accessible form. That's where Whitley comes in. One volume--all the important stuff. So unless you're a modeler or otherwise obsessed with micro-detail, you're likely to get a lot of use out of this book. Whitley's drawings leave much to be desired, but his text is concise and to the point--a good overview of the subject.

About the Author
Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance and Economics at the Boston University School of Management. He is the director of Boston University’s Chartered Financial Analysts Examination Review Program and has served as consultant to many private and governmental organizations. Professor Bodie is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he was director of the NBER Project on Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System, and he is a member of the Pension Research Council of The Wharton School. He is widely published in leading professional journals, and his previous books include Pensions in the U.S. Economy, Issues in Pension Economics, and Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System.

Alex Kane is professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He was visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and the pricing of options. Professor Kane is the developer of the International Simulation Laboratory (ISL) for training and experimental research in executive decision making.

Alan Marcus is professor of finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He received his PHD in Economics from MIT in 1981. Professor Marcus recently has been a visiting professor at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration and at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and has served as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also established the Chartered Financial Analysts Review Program at Boston College. Professor Marcus has published widely in the fields of capital markets and portfolio management, with an emphasis on applications of futures and options pricing models. His consulting work has ranged from new product development to provision of expert testimony in utility rate proceedings. He also spend two years at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), where he developed models of mortgage pricing and credit risk, and he currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Currency Risk Management Alliance of State Street Bank and Windham Capital Management Boston.

More about the shenanigans of a CIA spook than LSD

Interesting book that concentrates on a CIA spook named Ron Starks who was the biggest LSD dealer in the world, as well as being linked to operation Gladio which resulted in the murder of Italian politician Aldo Moro. Starks actually spent time in an Italian prison on other charges but was mainly being held because of he was suspected of being involved in the whole Operation Gladio/P2 Masonic/CIA lodge false flag terrorism circus. Once the Italian authorities had no legal grounds to hold him any longer he promptly disappeared off the face of the earth after being released. Starks was also linked to various CIA false flag terrorism shenanigans in the middle east also. Although Jewish he could pass as an Arab and was an accomplished linguist that could speak multiple languages. Really this book would probably be of more interest to somebody interested in conspiracy oriented stuff and how CIA spooks operate than a person with an interest in LSD.

as the grandson of Stark's chemist and son of the man who handed him his kilo of lsd, I must say that by trying to destroy the same culture he critiques by turning idiots against people like me, David Black has here written the true ketamine grimoire, meaning that there was never anything in any part of the known universe, let alone anything there to observe it. he also has destroyed millions of children with ecstasy by suggesting that stark was ever associated with the cia, if stark ever thought he was he truly would/should/will be dead as he was merely an underling. it is interesting to note here that Mr. Black is currently writing a book on socialism, and all of stark's acid was sponsored by the world socialist party. it was the 50's kgb' s acid and this whole cia thing really confused people. I would like to ask all parties involved in destroying my life because of this book to die quickly to avoid sinning any more. That is an ethical action in a time of war. As acid destroys the ketamine and ketamine was named by my chemical company I know what I am talking about it is very very very racist. Amazon will be shut down for taking this review off the internet ...this is the most dangerous book to ever exist. Although tark needed to be told, he did not need this in his life, and neither do I. social history of LSD is ok but its still based on talking to some "cool" "dude" from california, a stupid place some kid made it many many many years later. If you have read this far and have even thought that what those guys did was illegal, it was just illegal for some idiot street cop to find out. David black seems to have been talking to an imaginary federal agent who was involved in the investigation that didn't exist. People voted for nixon because he would allow drugs, still a party line communist, but the same man who ended the republiklan party forever with watergate. Mr. Black should write a book about that, not promoting neofacism like he does.

I will also add that stark's acid was made out of native american grains, the rez was never talked about, neither was the asian or african precursors, orowheat, or anything else for that matter. The book is written on the assumption that Mr. black doesn't know anything, as the name secret implies.

Not the best book but ok

I got this for my husband to study for his naturalization interview. I think it may be a good book used in conjunction with a class, but for studying on one's own I suspect there are better books out there. The format is a little confusing--it does a little civics/history study, then has a short section on filling out the N-400 and has a corresponding sample interview section, then goes back to civics/history and then to the N-400 again, etc. I did find the book & DVD helpful because we could see and read practice interviews, but I think the same thing can be gotten for cheaper in another book.
