Review
I bought quite a few books to study for the MCAT. The only one that I can say absolutely made a huge difference for me was the MCAT Prep Course Book. I did awful (like, embarrassingly awful!) in both semesters of physics in college and essentially had to start from scratch when preparing for the MCAT. I wish I would have had this book when I was taking physics! It was like 'Hallelujah!", I finally understand. Each chapter effectively and concisely explains the concepts, gives good examples, and is never tedious to read. --A Student

I am a Pre-Med student and I recently purchased this book. I had a lot of trouble with my undergrad Chem classes which I took about 4 years ago. This book greatly supplemented my knowledge and understanding of Organic and General Chemistry. In my opinion, this book is a great review for MCAT chem and orgo. --A Student

This book covers all the basics of biology. For someone like me, who had a lacking undergrad bio course, this book helps. The diagrams throughout the book are very helpful because they give you another way of remembering the concepts. All in all, this is great for reviewing bio. I have not yet looked at the verbal section, but it looks promising. --A Student

The physics section of this book is really really good, however the rest of the sections are just okay. Get only the physics book to save money.

Review

"Agile Data Warehousing, as outlined in Ralph’s multiple books, has transformed the way our BI team manages projects.  In just two years, we are delivering releases in iterations three times more frequently on five times the number of concurrent projects, while improving application quality and the enterprise nature of our solutions." --Mark Giesbrecht, Senior Manager, Business Intelligence, major Canadian railroad

"Agile Data Warehouse for the Enterprise is a must read for any data professional tasked with delivering enterprise reporting and analytics in the nimble, speed-to-value environment that we find ourselves today.  It marries agile methodology with data warehousing best practices to create a blueprint to deliver value fast." --Nik Green, Director of Business Intelligence for multi-billion dollar food retailer

"This comprehensive guide provides a solid and complete foundation for agile EDW development including revolutionary new paradigms.  I especially like the ‘out of the box’ thinking, practicality of the techniques, and the research and case studies backing up the validity of the proposed approaches.  Recommend reading for all DW/BI technical leaders." --Len Silverston, CEO of Universal Data Models and author of the Data Model Resource Book series

"If you’re still programming data warehouses by hand, you're wasting 90 percent of your time and money.  Ralph’s guide for project leaders not only outlines the automated, metadata-driven development we've been practicing for years in the Netherlands, but also links that practice to agile requirements, coding, and quality assurance.  It is a unique book, a must read." --Ronald Damhof, DW/BI Consultant to the Dutch Central Bank

"The industry has struggled to bring the mechanics and benefits of Agile to the data warehousing and business intelligence communities. Ralph’s works in this area is timely and important to assist in driving success within your enterprise and project teams. Following the guidance found in this book will help you deliver value at a rapid pace." --Tom Hammergren, President of Balanced Insight and author of Data Warehousing: Building the Corporate Knowledge Base

"Ralph has customized the agile development methodology for the unique needs of business intelligence.  My project teams were able to quickly understand and apply his approach without losing time to adapting generic Scrum techniques to the rigors of data integration and analytics." --Ron Lewis, program manager at a Fortune 1000 financial services company

"As a friend of Ralph and fellow Agile DW/BI author, I am very excited about this book. Ralph’s extensive research into what works; his hands-on application of those techniques; and his well-organized method of presenting information, are combined in this game changing book for data warehouse practitioners seeking greater agility." --Ken Collier PhD, author of Agile Analytics, Addison-Wesley, 2011

"This book presents a thorough approach to building quality into enterprise data warehouses, mitigating risk by applying proven models for testing, and detailing alternatives so that you can experiment to find the alternatives that work best for your team. These aren’t  mere off the cuff ideas, but proven techniques to overcoming the huge challenges of EDW by applying agile principles, illustrated with stories from the trenches." --Lisa Crispin, Co-Author of More Agile Testing: Learning Journeys for the Whole Team, and Agile Testing: A Practical Guide for Testers and Agile Teams

"“Ralph’s notion of ‘80/20 specifications’ for data warehousing projects really worked, saving our business partners the pain of doing an exhaustive requirements specification up-front.  This approach got the team developing the most important features first, letting the product owner fill in details on topics as each one came up during development." --Naveen Thalanki, Project Manager for a Fortune 500 company

"Agile Data Warehousing for the Enterprise is a “how to” book with innovative method and process components such as hyper data modeling and an iterative sub-release value cycle.  Ralph provides a clear outline of the concepts, methods, and frameworks you'll need to assemble a world-class BI/DW program of your own." --Hans Hultgren, author of Modeling the Agile Data Warehouse with Data Vault and BI/DW industry advisor

"One of TDWI’s most popular faculty members, Ralph packs this book with detailed direction and experience-driven insights about how to overcome the most challenging aspects of agile for business intelligence and data warehousing applications.  He has become an important thought leader for organizations seeking to increase the agility, quality, and ROI of their BI/DW programs." --David Stodder, Director of Research for Business Intelligence, The Data Warehousing Institute

"Ralph's book goes way beyond just agile programming―it illustrates an iterative approach to the full development life cycle and is particularly relevant to issues of data quality that we focus on at DAMA.  The hyper modeling techniques in particular will allow teams to avoid the death trap of producing big, risky application designs up-front before a project's requirements are fully known." -- Ken Dunn, President of DAMA’s Houston chapter

"Agile techniques and Ralph’s adaptations for enterprise data warehousing have dramatically improved our ability to understand business needs and to then plan, track, and deliver upon those needs for large and small projects. This book provides a thorough treatment of the vital leadership practices for agile projects including requirements, architecture, and quality assurance." -- Richard Tench, Manager, Information Delivery, major Canadian insurance company

For Leaders: Adapt and Endure
By Daniel C. Upton
The book is exceptionally well named and, as always from this author, well written. From the always-important perspective of forward-thinking data project leadership, it closes the loop on agile data warehousing at enterprise scale. Books from others have introduced agile dimensional modeling, mapped agile terminology from application development to business intelligence, or defined new, agile enterprise data warehouse architecture in detail. However, this book, which is targeted to project leaders, describes, with sufficient detail for the target reader, how the most challenging, most agile-resistant pieces of data warehousing -- the data structure itself (data model), ETL coding, testing, and change management – are logically broken down into agile-sized, requirements-scoped chunks of business value while completely avoiding data silos, sustaining an enterprise-wide perspective, and as a big bonus, maximizing adaptability to future change and easy enhancement. Friend, you are not dreaming. Following this method, the scope-creep that inevitably followed traditional best practices, from agile requirements to the very non-agile big data-model design up front, becomes a thing of the past.

HYPER NORMAL MODELS: Known to insiders as Data Vault, the methodology is aptly explained at the level of, if you will, the detail oriented project leader or enterprise architect (vs. a data modeler or engineer) seeking a deep immersion for assessment and implementation oversight. Accordingly, the book describes a cross section of architectural alternatives as the method has evolved in Europe, the U.S., and the land down-under. Among these pathways, two important ones that received less coverage than others in this work are Business Vault and Data Vault 2.0 (DV2).

Business Vault, a layer just-downstream containing rules-based transformed data, either as views or tables, has continued to evolve, as it needed to, such that it actually does provide a nicely standardized method for querying the tables once they are loaded into Hyper Normal structure, either for direct querying or in order to subsequently load a data presentation layer. Those who found writing queries directly from a hyper normal model, and especially those getting started as data modelers or ETL engineers, will benefit greatly from learning more about Business Vault patterns.

Data Vault 2.0 is an innovation in Data Vault, intended to move it from primarily a data modeling methodology into a more modern data warehouse logical architecture that supports increased data loading parallelization and a more loosely-coupled integration with Big Data, in which huge data velocity or volume demands an absolute minimum of target table dependencies. The book “Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0”, by Dan Linstedt and Michael Olschimke covers this innovation with the consistency, the detail, and the excellence that it deserves.
However, in my view, it is THIS book by Hughes that provides that all important data project leadership perspective for a data project leadership framework, if you will. Readers of this book who are intrigued with DV2, and who want to succinct, powerful 'how to' on DV2, should look into Kent Graziano’s “Better Data Modeling: An Introduction to Agile Data Engineering Using Data Vault 2.0” (Kindle), which is a near-perfect complement to this one, guiding data modelers and engineers seeking detailed ‘how to’ on DV2 patterns.

Moreover, this book I'm reviewing now has, in my view, the best top-down (project leadership framework) perspective to date on this exciting methodology. Hughes knows how to communicate and make it not just pallatable, but actually compelling.

HYPER GENERAL MODELS: The author also provides a fine introduction to a methodology for transforming source data directly, running it through a commercial transformation engine, then essentially loading it into dimensions and facts -- a proprietary methodology that is described as being available only through a single business intelligence platform vendor. The method, as I read it, does not simply rely, as I had expected it might, on the clever use of well-known table-generalization, aka ‘Universal Data Model’ principles, with their generalized ‘sub-type / super-type’ tables that, as a very high level explanation, reduce the number of tables essentially by storing records of varying concepts in a single table. Notwithstanding the author’s solid coverage of the hyper-general concepts, his indication -- that the commercial platform that actually executes it leaves some of these logical layers of hyper-generalization away from view from designers using the product – leaves me a bit concerned. However, since I have not used the commercial platform, I will not comment on it further, except to say that this author’s explanation of this intriguing platform was excellent.

Practitioners who fail to understand the insights offered in this book – instead sticking with either the old practice of big-enterprise-design-up-front, or the tactical (requirements driven) design, or no design approach of the inexperienced -- will find that their solutions are too slow to adapt to business change in modern times and will soon gather dust. Data warehouse project leaders who read this book and implement its guidance will know how to keep their solutions, careers, and teams dust-free. Recommended reading.

If you want to know about real world Agile Data Warehousing, this is the book to read!
By Diana Collins
"Agile" is a hot topic these days, but when it comes to data warehousing, being agile is easy to say, but hard to do. Data warehouse projects often get mired down in trying to answer every question that could possibly be asked, rather than answering the questions that are most critical to the business. Ralph makes a great case in this book for a more business value based approach and provides some solid evidence that traditional tool sets have failed to provide the flexibility required. His presentation of the “hyper generalization” approach is very compelling, both in terms of business value and time/cost savings. Nobody knows this area better than Ralph!

Ralph does a great job describing Agile Data Warehousing and how to enable it in your enteprise. Recommend!
By Stephen Pace
I've seen Ralph present this material in person at TDWI, and he's exactly right. 60% to 90% of the labor we currently invest in EDWs today could be eliminated through methods described in this book. I particularly liked this discussion of how alternative data modeling techniques can enable agile delivery methods, and I thought the "hyper generalization" approach he presented had particularly large potential for the data warehouse automation space. Recommend!

The Little Magazine in Contemporary AmericaFrom University Of Chicago Press

Little magazines have often showcased the best new writing in America. Historically, these idiosyncratic, small-circulation outlets have served the dual functions of representing the avant-garde of literary expression while also helping many emerging writers become established authors. Although changing technology and the increasingly harsh financial realities of publishing over the past three decades would seem to have pushed little magazines to the brink of extinction, their story is far more complicated.

In this collection, Ian Morris and Joanne Diaz gather the reflections of twenty-three prominent editors whose little magazines have flourished over the past thirty-five years. Highlighting the creativity and innovation driving this diverse and still vital medium, contributors offer insights into how their publications sometimes succeeded, sometimes reluctantly folded, but mostly how they evolved and persevered. Other topics discussed include the role of little magazines in promoting the work and concerns of minority and women writers, the place of universities in supporting and shaping little magazines, and the online and offline future of these publications.

Review
"Little magazines, known for their experimental nature and independent spirit, are the focus of this absorbing collection of essays, written by leading editors working over the past thirty years. This fascinating anthology brings to life the literary, cultural, and political landscapes intrinsic to avant-garde publications and deepens our understanding of their immense significance. This book takes its rightful place on library shelves next to earlier classics The Little Magazine: A History and Bibliography and The Little Magazine in America.  It’s an indispensable tool for scholars and a great read!" (Karen Gisonny, New York Public Library)

“A thoughtful and much-needed champion of the vitality and creativity of literary journals today.” (The Paris Review)

"Little magazines are crucial to the literary health of our country. Today, we are inundated with a bottom-line publishing ideal. In the face of conglomerate money culture, we need our littles more than ever. This book is essential." (Bill Henderson, founder and editor of Pushcart Press)

"At the zenith of print culture, modernist writers aspired to renew civilization or dynamite it, to subvert consumer capitalism or make a name or a buck from it, in a relatively new print genre—the little magazine. Morris and Diaz have now asked a score of the little magazine editors and writers who have shaped our own literary culture to reflect on the present and future of the genre “during the most radical paradigm shift since the invention of movable type.” This collection reassures us that the internet not only affords new modes of writing and reading but also leaves plenty of room for print experiments—from zines and boxes of printed documents to the survivals of modernist-era or university-based magazines.  Future readers will look back to The Little Magazine in Contemporary America as a key document of the American literary periodicals of our age." (Mark Morrisson, Pennsylvania State University)

"The Little Magazine in Contemporary America is a fascinating set of responses to the two great changes in writing and reading since 1980.  The first is the internet, which has given a new face to the drive of letters toward action-for-change, enabling immediate distribution of readers’ insights in answer to the work of artists—and in answer to postings by other web readers.  A little magazine today can speak to audiences who never read the magazine itself; they can gather around the magazine’s comment sites for warmth, argument, and validation. The second great change in the world of letters during the past 35 years is the transformative effect of creative nonfiction as a cross-genre mode.  For it has encouraged heady mixtures and a renewal of rhetorical poise in the art of many fine poets and prose writers, breathing delight into the work of making it new." (Mary Kinzie, Northwestern University)

“The Little Magazine in Contemporary America is an important book—one that is long overdue. It provides a different perspective on the role of little magazines that is valuable and not readily available anywhere elsewhere. Particularly impressive are Jane Friedman’s and Don Share’s essays, which wrap up the entire volume brilliantly, both giving a sense of the potential for independent magazines in the future while acknowledging the rich history of the past.” (Jodee Stanley, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana)

"The Little Magazine in Contemporary America, a much more manageable collection of interviews and essays that was published in April, looks at the years since then, the years that included—so say the book’s editors, Ian Morris and Joanne Diaz— “the end of the ascendancy of print periodicals,” meaning that the best small litmags have moved online....A new journal needs a reason to exist: a gap that earlier journals failed to fill, a new form of pleasure, a new kind of writing, an alliance with a new or under-chronicled social movement, a constellation of authors for whom the future demand for work exceeds present supply, a program that will actually change some small part of some literary readers’ tastes. None of this has changed with the rise of the Web. Nor has the other big truth about little magazines which emerges from Diaz and Morris’s book, or from a day spent with anybody who runs one: it’s exhausting, albeit exciting, to do it yourself." (The New Yorker)

“It’s been thirty-five years since the last comprehensive examination of little magazines, during which time the advent of the Internet and evolving publishing constrictions have presented unique challenges to these little engines that could. Morris and Diaz’s anthology…addresses these challenges and the ways in which many little magazines have turned them into advantages, including the opportunity for more and specialized promotion and differentiation. Public discussion and debate is essential to literary and artistic work, and these essays speak to the opportunity for this collective conversation to reach a wider audience in the digital age. The Little Magazine in Contemporary America is a welcome and compelling update, one that offers substantive hope for the future and continued significance of its subject.”
(Newcity)

Good for filling in the gaps
By M. Creese
Wrote the GMAT twice before turning to this book after I wrote the exam the second time. Prior to this I had used GMAT Prep, the GMAT Prep additional question pack 1, the Official Guide, the Manhattan set of 8 strategy guides, and of course practice tests.

My biggest criticism of this book is that the difficulty levels, even for the so-called 'Challenge' problems, don't get that high. Manhattan GMAT quant questions can be brutal, often harder than many actual GMAT questions because they tend to be heavy on calculation in addition to being tricky. As a result, MGMAT has rightly developed a reputation for being the go-to choice for practicing quant. TGMATM problems seem pretty basic by comparison and a little too easy.

TGMATM adds value in two areas: repetitive drills that drive certain points home and its innovative coverage of minor question types. These drill questions are often pretty simple, but they make doing certain types of calculations second-nature while helping you get a 'fingertip feel' for certain kinds of manipulations. Weighted averages, permutations and combinations come to mind.

Even after all the prep I had done prior to picking up TGMATM, there were still quite a few 'Aha!' moments because this book has a knack for demystifying minor question types and trick questions that can be solved in any of several ways but defy ready categorization, as well as taking novel approaches to topics I thought I already had a pretty good handle on. It's a testament to the value of returning to the basics without simply passively reviewing tired old flash cards.

To me its real value lies either in filling in the gaps for someone who has been around the block already, or serving as the foundation for more rigorous GMAT prep if you're fresh out the gate.

It's not a bad place to start, and it's a pretty good place to fine-tune, but it is NOT comprehensive and all-encompassing, which I think was supposed to be the goal.

The most complete GMAT Math Guide hands down but not very friendly
By GMAT Club (Expert)
I am the founder of GMAT Club and top 1000 reviewer on Amazon - I have seen a lot of GMAT books and also reviewed pretty much all of them. This is a single most complete book that includes everything you need to get a solid score on the quant (you should also get the OG 12, and the author recommends it as well). It is also not a book that just came out of nowhere, Total GMAT math has been available as an ebook for about 4 years now and I am glad to see it is finally available in the print format. However, it does assume a greater level of general math knowledge as well as commitment than most GMAT books - that's what you get with a comprehensive book

The get the most of this book: 1) Read the first intro chapters including the one on "how to use this book" 2) Take each suggestion seriously 3) Make your own notes in a separate notebook 4) Always time yourself with a timer and keep a GMAT error log

Strengths:
- 300+ GMAT style questions
- Good explanations with diagrams
- The book is writen as an instruction manual with many insights and tips n the chapters/explnations
- Over 500 Exercises (non-gmat style questions)
- Covers all topics test on the gmat including probabilyt, statistics, etc without going too far
- Each question are gets a section (inequalities, absolute value, work problems, etc)
- Includes 100 of 700+ questions
- Good strategy suggestions including focusing on concepts rather than solving thousands of questions, writing question information down, and mental math concepts
- Good paper and formulas are done well

Weaknesses:
- The chapters are structured in a slightly unorthodox pattern. The book starts with algebra, then goes into geometry, then work problems, and then number properties. I felt that moving number properties closer to the beginning of the book would make more sense. I also felt the chapters were a bit choppy (only a few pages long) but that's my preference
- Could be intimidating: the text is very tightly packed with just a handful of illustrations. (see my uploaded image for details)
- No highlighting or a summary sheet - would be great to have formulas or key concepts highlighted on pages or at the end of the book
- Copyright and website address on every page - gets a bit old and distracting
- No OG recommendations table - would be helpful to have a list of questions from the OG for additional practice after each chapter
- Table of content is not usable (11 pages)

Bottom line: This is the ultimate book for math on the GMAT. If you are looking for a 50 on the quant, this is the book to get. However, this may be too much for some who are not seeking to spend 6 weeks on this book. Let not the price scare you - it is on the low side of what other prep companies charge for the entire math book set.

***Other thoughts***
5 Most Common Mistakes with GMAT preparation
1: Rushing to take tests before learning anything - do take a diagnostic test, but stop right there
2: Starting with the Official Guide and wasting of official GMAT questions
3: Giving GMAT the worst time of the day - studying after a long day at work
4: Skipping basics and rushing to advanced topics
5: Starting to prepare with poor English proficiency

big time Quant improvement!
By Rachel
I ordered this book to prepare for a GMAT retake. I went from 580 to 640 (Q34 to Q40) in one month of prep (I know I'm not a 700+ genius scorer, so I don't know how useful this is for those super high-level students out there) and I have this book to thank. Mr. Sackmann has a way of explaining the problems without being wordy or confusing - his language made things click, especially in the probablilty and combination/permutation sections. Each section offers an explanantion (including basics, how often the type of problem appears in the test, useful tricks, etc), then a 'drill' section followed by practice word problems and a challenge if appropriate.

The layout makes it easy to focus on your weak areas and there are plenty of practice questions to help raise your ability level. The drills are particularly useful if, like me, you sometimes screw up a problem not due to misunderstanding the question or not knowing HOW to solve it, but in the actual solving. I made remarkably fewer math errors after completing every drill.
It took me about a week to work through it, averaging 2-3 hours a day. However, I would also recommend the OG as the question styles are a bit different than what the GMAT would ask.

The only thing I would change is the spacing of the text. I like working the problems on the page and would have loved a little more scratchwork space. But the content is fantastic and a great way to polish your quant skills!

Review
Review of previous edition: In their succinct, highly-readable, and now updated guide to California politics, Janiskee and Masugi provide a historical overview and contemporary account of the major constitutional features, governmental arrangements, fiscal practices, and diverse social characteristics of the Golden State. Aiming high, they consciously model their Democracy in California on Tocqueville's Democracy in America. They offer thoughtful meditations on Tocqueville's insights into the principles, problems, and prospects of democratic life. Their aim is uncannily accurate. This is an indispensable book for anyone wishing to understand and assess the successes and failures of California politics and government. (Ralph A. Rossum, Claremont McKenna College)

Review of previous edition: Janiskee and Masugi have done it again..., producing a cogent analysis of California politics that is both timely and rooted in historical context. With tight prose and thorough research, it shows how Progressivism continues to shape state politics, with results that are often far from progressive. This book is a wonderful brief introduction to the not-always-golden politics of the Golden State. (John J. Pitney Jr., Roy P. Crocker Professor of American Politics, Claremont McKenna College)
