It Must Have Been Cathartic

While there are quite a few misdirects in this book, I did enjoy the frenetic pace and desperate tone. That along with its short length has it come across as an impassioned speech for change. These short excerpts give you a sense of what I mean:

- "Hype and B.S. are nothing new in the world of advertising, but things are getting out of hand."

- we need "to end the delusional thinking and start doing creative work that actually sells products"

- "That's when I learned that stuff that doesn't work...that's code-named 'branding'."

- "When and why did the absurd idea that you can create a brand just with ads - worse, with vague ad empty 'branding campaigns' - come to pass"

- "Mediocre agencies found it simpler to babble about values, positioning, branding, etc. than to do the hard creative work necessary to say something interesting enough about a product to help move it off the shelves."

On one level Moruzzi is correct. Advertising has become entertainment not sales. Branding has become about mission-led organizations not sales. It allows the purveyors of those services not to be held accountable for...sales. Incredibly, that is why they exist but they shy away from the task. Moruzzi rants some more, "no empty and vague feel-good happy-shiny-people-holding-hand 'branding campaign' has ever created a brand."

Having worked in start ups, Moruzzi admits that the catalyst for this book is the ubiquitous but highly ineffective digital advertising. He likens this type of advertising to solutions in search of a problem. It is of the most intrusive and least relevant sort and the majority of the book is a rant against it alone. That is fine and well-deserved but what makes the book a little less credible is praise for traditional advertising from the famous Creative Revolution.

He highlights the same campaigns that any marketing and advertising book does from the Mad Men era. The problem in doing so is he is missing the point that there were only a handful of good ads that each iconic agency from that time continue to hold up as effective. Arguably, this time in advertising became a game of more not better. Teressa Iezzi, staff editor at Fast Company magazine and previously editor of Creativity, wrote in her book, The Idea Writers: Copywriting in a New Media and Marketing Era, “For every “Think Small” in the 1960’s there was a bottomless bowl of the same insufferable dross that’s served up on any given commercial break and that covers the ground from forgettable waste of everyone’s time and money to actively annoying disincentive to ever buy the product being advertised.”

Moruzzi holds up Howard Luck Gossage (1917–1969) or "The Socrates of San Francisco" as a beacon for today's marketers. Gossage focused on storytelling and knew he was in the business of selling. So that makes sense but he fails to link the perceived successes of Gossage to what digital marketers what must do today. I am more a fan of the now defunct N.W. Ayer agency. Their work is the true beacon from advertising's debated history.

He hits a few good points when he takes on social media. This starts with the observation that "most companies do not like their customers." He makes the point that companies are mistakenly sending customers to social media platforms away from their own site that they control. Moruzzi says, "Most companies are scared to death about getting out of their steel and glass castles and having to open up to the outside world. Look at their uninspired advertising. Look at their lame websites. But all of a sudden they want to be hip on social media? Who do they think they are kidding?"

On content he suggests that brands shouldn't post anything unless they are willing to pay to distribute. This he believes would improve the quality and cut down on the overall amount of communications. Lastly, the author makes a point that I have subscribed to. Marketers are always attracted to the next shiny new toy thinking it to be a magic panacea. So the industry has trained itself to chase fads while training consumers to disengage.

While I believe the book is not accurately titled, it comes clear what he is out accomplish. Moruzzi wants marketing to be a considered craft again. A craft whose purpose is to sell. I hope he writes another but that the topic be on the 9 startups he has worked on in the last 16 years. That experience has prompted him to be frustrated and jaded. A deeper exploration into that might prove more valuable.

Popping the Social Media Balloon!

As one of the original “Mad Men,” I have seen many changes in the advertising world over the last forty odd years. None has been as dramatic as the rise of digital and its offshoot, social media. In common with all the other “latest and greatest,” sweeping claims are being made as to the importance of making “social” an integral part of your marketing program. Assertions about its effectiveness are supported by soft metrics such as clicks, affinity, awareness, friending and so on. Now Massimo Moruzzi, who has lived through the trenches of the dot com implosion and now the ever accelerating growth of social media, is extremely well qualified to stick a giant pin in the ever expanding social media hot-air balloon. And by heck, he certainly does that. He delivers cogent, rational and incredibly researched evidence that social media is, in fact… Little more than another iteration of the smoke and mirrors the ad biz has subjected the unwashed masses to since the days of obscene graffiti advertising brothels on the walls of ancient Rome

Insightful and written with love and dedication for all to access God's Power

It teaches the reader how to feel and know that God is in us and in everything. In fact, it shows you that God is everywhere and always available and accessible to all who ask. It is a spiritual, non-religious, non-denominational book about how to deepen our connection with Divine Spirit while at the same time being able to access this Divine Power at any time we need help or guidance.
This book, when following what is being taught, will allow you to experience God/Spirit whenever you want—at will. You can contact God/Spirit or your higher self, asking a question, or asking for guidance, or even request a spiritual experience with the Divine Being, and then be given the answer or spiritual experience instantaneously.

It's okay

Working at R+D Dpt one tends to forget about the whole for a newer product. This book is fine to find design answers, but a primer must also be handy. I recommend 2 books for learning packaging purposes.

A comprehensive and understandable work on hydraulics...

As a lecturer and graduate student in water resource engineering, I have read numberous textbooks covering the topic of fluid mechanics. I have reviewed textbooks written by aeronautical and mechanical engineers, and find that the civil engineers, particularly Dr.'s Finnemore and Franzini, have done an exemplary job in writing a book that is clear and logical, yet spares no detail, in presenting the fundamentals of fluids to undergraduates and graduates alike. The book begins with definitions, viscocity, and hydrostatics, then moves along to open-channel hydraulics and waterhammer.
The authors discuss the details in terms of concepts, testing, and mathematical computations while using a minimum of complicated vector integrals. They continue to present "the big picture" of hydraulics even while explaining fluid theory - a student and lecturer could not ask for more. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I laud this textbook and recommend it to any practicing civil or agricultural engineer, or to any student of engineering.

Best hydraulic reference I have found & I use it regularly

I own the 8th edition and have used it regulary since graduation 12 years ago as a practicing civil engineer designing water treatment plants. I have looked at many other fluid mechanics books over the years and have not found any equal to this one. I need to get the 10th edition and see how it has changed with Daugherty no longer around. There are other books that are more in-depth with theoretical analysis, but this one has the best balance betweeen theory and practical application for typical civil engineering projects.

Okay but not exceptional

Most of the material covered is fairly basic with an emphasis on fluid statics of course (constant velocity flow). I was disappointed to see apparent absence of higher level mathematics. I understand that many of the real problems in fluid dynamics/CFD are approximations of the underlying equations (Navier-Stokes, etc.). However I would like to have seen some of the simpler models of turbulent flow at the very least. The homework problems are very easy.

Bhanu Dhamija is the founder and chairman of the Divya Himachal Group, the largest newspaper publishing company in Himachal Pradesh, India. He was born in Bulandshehar (UP) in 1959, but has lived almost half his life in the United States. Recommendable

Diabetes is one of the reasons I became interested in the Wheat Belly Diet. Not only 3 of my grandparents, but my mom and all of her 4 siblings are suffering from diabetes, and my mom was the first to be apply this diet to her lifestyle. From the experience she had, and the great results (which included a great improvement in her heath and weight loss), I was encouraged to try it myself.
And I want to say this; If you want to do yourself, and your family the BEST thing you can do, the feed them better and healthier, and this book is the right thing for that!
It has lots of great and simple recipes and I have tried a few and they were very good. I enjoyed them and you will too :)

I deeply recommend this book!

This stuff really works! I was absolutely tired of my wheat belly and the uncomfortable feeling of being fat. That is why I decided to look for some help and bought this awesome book! It is full of recipes and different options for every day. Not only does it include healthy options, but the most important is that you will not be hungry during this diet. Losing weight is one of the most difficult challenges you can set yourself up to, but with this book it is much easier. You have to try it out! It certainly helped me.

Great Variety

I've looked at some wheat-free options but never seen a collection of recipes that had this much variety. I like that the author gave the readers so many different options for bread recipes. I also like that she took the time to explain why wheat is such a "bad guy" and the issues it can cause when it is left in our diets. This book is a nice collection of gluten free or wheat free recipes that are easy to make. Great resource for my kitchen!

A great fun read: High Five by Janet Evanovitch. Don't miss it!

High Five by Janet Evanovitch is a funny, funny book to read! Evanovitch mixes home fun with mom, dad and grandma that is so close to what some of us knew when we were growing up. Between looking for those that don't appear for their court date, Stephanie Plum is now looking for her uncle Fred who has just disappeared from the face of the earth. Plum goes after an FTA, Briggs, who is a computer guy. When she gets to his apartment she is amazed at what she sees. What transpires with Briggs is fun! Plum gets herself into more jams than you can buy a the local grocery store. I know you will enjoy this book. This is a great mix of murder, who done it, and why! You won't be sorry! Rated, not for those under eighteen for sexual content. Strong language. DP, Castro Valley, Ca.

If I had to choose a favorite from Books one to seven in this series, it would be good old number five.

Stephanie's got bills to pay, and since there are no FTA's to apprehend, she reluctantly accepts Ranger's offer of employment. Of course, Ranger's jobs are never straightforward or well-defined, or even completely above board, and what follows is a delightful display of ineptitude and pure dumb luck, combined with that palpable tension whenever the two meet.

Throw in a cranky little man, a fake bookie, and the case of the missing Uncle Fred, and you have the funniest adventure of the series. Uncle Fred makes Scrooge look like a philanthropist, and when he disappears there is some concern, but not too many tears. With Stephanie on the case, things turn deadly serious when she discovers some gristly pictures in Uncle Fred's effects, and then the bodies start showing up.

Going through expensive cars like Snickers bars, she again proves that the only car she is capable of handling is the Buick war tank, and then there's the deranged boxer Ramirez out of jail and trying to save her soul. To crown it all, Joe Morelli is still around to twang her heartstrings and other body parts, and she's got Lula and Grandma Mazur in tow.

Packed to the edges of the pages with humor, action and the inevitable mayhem, I'd definitely give my "high five" to High Five.

New Twists & Turns for a Sweet, Tough Bounty Hunter

I love all of the books in this series, but this is definitely one of the standouts. The mystery is genuinely involving, the characters beautifully defined, and there's a pathos, sweetness, sadness, and deep scariness to the plot this time around that really elevates the entire book. An old relative of Stephanie has disappeared, and all that remains are some gruesome photographs in a drawer. The story is one of the best, and most chilling, in the series.

One of my favorite things about the Stephanie Plum books is that they are truly serial in nature -- they aren't all replaceable, and Stephanie and the larger plot both evolve really naturally with each passing book. In this one, for instance, her relationship with Morelli cools while her friendship with Ranger begins to show hints of a potential evolution. Meanwhile, her job, money, and family situations are a believable (and believably funny) mess. But it's the continued development of Ranger, who's such an interesting character, that really makes the story an added delight (even Grandma thinks he's a hunk, while Lula thinks he's Batman). And of course, Stephanie continues to wreak havoc on every car she drives!

Speaking of which: Lula, Grandma, and everyone else are just as much fun as always, and again, I love the way Lula isn't just some funny interchangeable sidekick to the indomitable Stephanie. Instead she is smart, tough, a loyal friend, and completely un-selfpitying, despite all her hard knocks.

A great read, and lots of fun.

Randle has a keen eye for detail, drawing evocative images of both the situation and the people involved, as well as offering spot-on character dialogue. The Last Ferryman isn’t simply the story of progress supplanting obsolescence. The mood, the community, and the time all come alive in this rich and beautifully presented tale.

About the Author
Gregory Randle grew up on the Wabash River in southeastern Illinois. He was raised to have a wary respect for the river, hearing stories of its bounty as well as its hidden dangers, such as its mysterious undercurrent that claimed the lives of even experienced swimmers. Later, when he was old enough to patch holes in an old wooden boat and operate a small motor loaned to him by his grandfather, Randle spent hours on the river reveling in its wildness and beauty. He now lives near St. Cloud, Minnesota with his wife Janelle. Randle has two sons, Elliot and Samuel. This is his first novel.

This well developed story and characters are presented for your consideration in this artfully written first novel. A novel about the ravages of progress tempered by the human condition, it is a timeless story that resonates in a world where the new ways rapidly replace history and tradition. Mr. Randle has hit a home run on his first at bat! I anxiously await his next offering.

Excellent Read

The author brings life to the characters in The Last Ferryman. His story, about the determined and stubborn Buck Shyrock, the last ferry boat operator on the Wabash River in the fictional town of Millerville, Illinois, is very well written and holds your interest throughout the book. The author helps you imagine what life was like in 1939 in small town Millerville, while a new bridge is being built to span the river, bringing Buck's livelihood and life as he knows it to an end. You find yourself not only pulling for Buck but also his family, which is struggling with their own worries and fears over the looming change in Buck's life.

I highly recommend this book and congratulate the author on his fine work.

The Last Ferryman is one of the best books that I have read in a very long time. The author's writing style and research actually make you feel as though you are living in the novel's time period, and that you personally know the characters and their issues. It is amazing that this written account of Buck Shyrock, who operates the river ferry, can pull you into the character's life so quickly and completely. I finished this book with a great compassion and admiration for Buck Shyrock, and I am really looking forward to any books that Mr. Gregory Randle may write in the future. I highly recommend this book! It has been one of my favorites.

This book presents a case study of Europe's impact on an old and distinctive non-European civilisation. Part One deals with the elements in Europe's strength, technological, political and intellectual. It also uses Wallerstein's world-systems perspective to give an economic dimension to this picture of the new world of Europe, and then looks at the important question of the changing place of the Dutch in the new economic order from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century. This is followed by a brief account of the history of the Dutch East-India Company in Java, and its political effects.
Part Two deals with the nature of the Javanese ancien regime, both in court and in provincial circles, with a focus on society and civilisation, rather than those staples of Javanese historiography to date, political events and economic statistics.
Part Three deals with the overall pattern set by the VOC's changing economic imperatives and with the impact of the successive tides of capitalism on three regional societies of Java.
Part Four deals with intellectual shifts that took place in this period, and argues that these shifts were less conservative than the socio-economic ones described in Part Three and, though more fragile and vulnerable, were crucial for the future.
The conclusion attempts to show the significance of these developments for modern Indonesia and the way in which some of the dynamics begun in this period are being played out in the contemporary world.
