Gerd Ludwig is a zoologist and editor of the German magazine, "Animal. "

Mikhail Gorbachev is a former Soviet statesman. He was the final leader of the Soviet Union, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991. Gorbachev's policies of openness and restructuring as well as summit conferences with President Ronald Reagan contributed to the end of the Cold War. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

Finally, a thorough photographic document of Chernobyl

As a passionate photo book collector and history junkie, I find this book to be one of the most impressive of my countless purchases in recent memory. I own several other photo books on Chernobyl, and know many photographers have covered this subject, but none match the shear scope and quality of Gerd Ludwig's 20 year retrospective masterpiece.

Mr. Ludwig's powerful photographs of the devastating consequences of the meltdown are as informative as they are artful, and as heart wrenching, as they are jaw-dropping. While the images of the ghost town and the exclusion zone are haunting, the images of the victims and elderly residents in the zone show the human side of the tragedy with such honesty and empathy. His photos from deep inside the reactor are like no other - especially the image of the frozen clock inside the reactor - what a shot! I get the feeling that he lives and breathes this subject, and has taken a lot of risks, both emotionally and physically over the last 20 years.

The printing and layout of the book are equally impressive. First off, hold it with two hands - the book is large, thick, and wow is it heavy! At 250 pages, with a hard cover, and a sturdy slipcase, this is a true art object. The paper is a fine satin finish, and the beautifully printed color images really pop off the page. As soon as I picked up the book, I could tell that this is a quality European style photo book - not some cheap flimsy thing printed in China without any input by the author.

There is also a lot of research and information in the book. The essay by Mikhail Gorbachev brought the entire disaster into a new light for me, as I had never considered the political consequences. The introduction by Gerd helps to explain the nuances of the story and give you a feeling for what it was like for him to shoot in the zone, plus the detailed captions give further context to each photograph. Bravo for giving the readers intelligent background information!

Also of note, is the cover of the book itself. Inside the slipcase, with his famous photograph of the workers wearing gas masks inside the reactor, is a very simple cover, showing the Soviet's press announcement of the disaster as it was happening. It is a chilling warning to the images that come. The following quotes from the book, Voices From Chernobyl, add to this feeling as well. That book by the way, is also a must-read (I had tears reading many of the first hand accounts of the disaster).

Altogether, I'm thoroughly honored to have this book in my collection. I'm glad I took the extra time to track Mr. Ludwig down and buy a signed copy too, totally worth the few extra bucks and it certainly adds value to me. I can't wait to catch an exhibition of this work someday!

I've been following Gerd's work for a long time and am truly impressed with this, his latest book. From the introduction essay by Gorbachev to his most recent work at Chernobyl, stunning photos lead you through a roller coaster of history and emotion that continues on to today.

The book itself is well made and the attention to color and detail is beautiful. The binding is strong, with heavy paper stock, its a solid book.

Overall, it's one of those truly rare and stunning books that captures not just a moment or a singular story, but a collective history we can't bear to forget.

THESE PHOTOGRAPHS SIMPLY MUST BE WITNESSED

The photographs in this book simply must be witnessed. They strike you just as a powerful blow to your gut might, or a stunning blow to your brain. They will empty your lungs and figuratively split your scull. When Oppenheimer witnessed the first nuclear explosion he remarked that it brought to mind the words from the Bhagavad Gita "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." These photographs lift the mask on that dark side in a way never before seen. And even at that, as Mikhail Gorbachev writes in the introduction, "One could now imagine much more clearly what might happen if a nuclear bomb exploded. According to scientific experts, one SS-18 rocket could contain a hundred Chernobyls."

Review of Polarized:Sex, Lies and Family Betrayal

At first, I was a little skeptical when picking up this book about manic depression. I wasn't sure how the author was going to paint a picture for the reader of what exactly the mental illness entails.
I was thoroughly impressed with this book. It is an amazing insight into the life of a manic. Some parts of the book were disturbing to read, mostly the incestuous relationship with his step mother and his father's crude sense of humor. It's disappointing to read that his father would choose a woman over his own son, but some people like to bury their heads in the sand and take their denial to the extreme. I have highly recommended this book to my friends, family and to my close friend whose brother has bipolar disorder and believes no one understands what he is going through.
Joseph DeBlasi, you are a brave man for sharing your story with the world. I hope people can read your book with open minds and understanding hearts, instead of biased point of views and judgmental prejudices of mental disorders.

A Page Turner & Fine Contribution to Understandiing Mental Illness

I could not put down this book until the last page was read! It is a brutally honest look into the bipolar mental illness of the author. Hopefully, it will be used in university classrooms to help psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and effected families to really understand the depth of this illness and the good news of the possibilities of recovery.

How ironic that the author's own father is a medical doctor. It reminds me of the adage: "Physician, Heal Thyself!"

I feel this book may help to enlighten those in the general public who have been fortunate enough to have never experienced this trauma.

This book is a heartfelt expose on living with mental illness and specifically the origin of bipolar disorder for this young man who has emerged to lead life as loving husband and father.

It is hard to ever empathize the type of illness and trauma this young man was subjected to, both of which this book exposes magnificently.

It is a timely issue as Mental Illness is in the forefront of society at the present time.

I applaud this man's courage in revealing the intimate details of his tortured life.

Mixed Feelings

Maya is just a wallflower. At least, that's what she thought she was. Her mission was to make it through high school without drawing any attention to herself. She was so close to accomplishing her goal before everything blew up in her face, she became the center of attention and the girl every girl wanted to be or be friends with. The Scions changed everything.

I'm pretty conflicted on this one. On one hand, I really enjoyed All I've Never Wanted ... I enjoyed the back and forth between the characters and most of the storyline. But on the other hand, it was a little much in some places. The story felt bogged down by everything that was going on within these pages. Just when it felt like the story was picking up, it would start slowing down again. There was just so much going on. I don't want to get into everything that was happening because I don't want to spoil the surprises for anyone else but keep in mind that there are like 10 subplots going on with this main storyline.

I'm a big fan of Cinderella stories (like many other ladies) but I think that there is a point when it can be pointed out too often how rich someone is compared to their potential love interest. I get it. These kids (The Scions) are powerful ... they come from very wealthy and powerful families, they get special treatment at school, they fly private jets during their lunch hour at school, have yachts, wipe their asses with $1000 bills. They are wealthy. Got it. It felt like that piece of info was force fed to the reader a little bit. Was it important to the story? Absolutely. But there's no reason to beat a dead horse. They're rich. Got it.

All of that being said, I did find myself growing attached to Maya. She was a wonderfully written main character and I really enjoyed experiencing things with her. Most of the time, she balanced out the richy rich talk within the novel with her down-to-earth outlook and behaviors. The other characters were okay ... I wasn't nearly as attached to them as I was Maya though.

There are a lot of reviewers who are comparing this to another series ... I think it was some kind of manga ... and instead of reviewing just this book, they are doing a comparison of the two. Sometimes that isn't fair at all. From what I understand, there are some similarities or something and people are losing their s*** over it. I've never heard of that manga series or whatever but if you're looking for a nice summer read, give this one a try. Don't worry about what others are saying, you should try it out for yourself. You just might find a new author to follow.

Funny, romantic, and all around awesome!!

I've never heard of this author prior to participating in this blog tour, but you can be certain I'll be looking for future books, and prior ones too. I loved this story from the very first page. Yes, it was as cute as the cover indicates it would be, and the summary just screams cute, but it was so much more than just cute.

First, the characterization in this story was amazing. I felt like I knew each of these characters so well, and they were my favorite aspect of the story. I loved watching their interactions, their wordplay... the dialogue just brought them to glowing life. At first I thought to myself, okay, yes, we have a cliched group of rich kids here and the girl who tries not to be affected by them like the rest of the school, but these kids were anything but cliche. They had their own insecurities, their own issues at home. Life wasn't perfect for them, and I loved that the author gave them flaws, gave them issues that they had to deal with. So much of the time in books, these types of characters are very one dimensional, and there's always a girl who claims they don't affect her. Ana Huang handled this completely different.

Once Maya shows that she's her own person, able to stand head to head with them, they respect her. They open up their group to her, and by extension, her friend, Venice. And then the real fun starts, because she gets along famously with all of the Scions except for their leader, Roman. Yet, that is just who the rest of the group is determined to hook her up with.

The tension between these two was so fun to read. Their witty and angry, crackling dialogue was so entertaining, and the sexual tension just oozed off the page for me. These are definitely two people who are into each other but are doing everything they can to avoid admitting it for their own reasons.

Then there's the grandmother. OMG. The entire story was funny and had me laughing out loud, but scenes where the grandmother was a player, there were several of those that had me in tears I was laughing so hard.

This was just a really light-hearted, entertaining, funny, and wonderful book, all the way around. I love a large cast like this, if done well, and this author knew how to do it. I flew through this book, and the author had me hooked with every single character. I loved them all. This is definitely going on my 5 star and Favorites bookshelf. Loved it!!!

Finding What You Never Knew You Needed

This was a really great book. It had moments of hilarity, suspense, and sweetness. Maya Lindberg is on her Senior year and her second year at Valesca Academy. It is a private school that is filled with many rich kids but the richest and most powerful are the Scions. They are the four most popular and powerful students in the school and their descendants created the school. Maya spent her whole Junior year trying to stay under the radar and off the Scions sights. But her Senior year she messed up and had an outburst and now she is in their sights.

Maya is a wonderfully down to earth character who doesn't get wrapped up in money and such. Everyone in school and around wants to be the Scions friends or part of them and she wants the opposite. But she realizes that the Scions are so much more than they appear. Carlos is quiet but he loves so many of the same things that Maya loves and he's like a new best friend. Parker is a playboy and can be majorly perverted but he's caring and he will be there for someone he cares about. Zack is a musician and appears to be happy go lucky all the time but there is more under the surface. Roman is so much more than he appears. He seems cold and demanding but he can be sweet and tender.

Maya found people that were so much more than they appeared and found another type of family. They are wonderful friends and they will be there for one another when needed.

Definitely must read. So worth it.

About the Author
Robert G. Wade was a chess player, author, journalist, and coach. Born on April 10, 1921 in Dunedin, New Zealand, he won the New Zealand championship three times before moving to England in 1948 to further his chess career. He was best known for playing in high level tournaments, including one Interzonal, for winning the British Championship twice, and for writing more than 30 books, including “The Chess Games of Robert J. Fischer” ISBN 0923891595 , which was later reprinted with more games added as “The Chess Games of Bobby Fischer” ISBN 0923891374. His most famous games were his draw with Bobby Fischer (not many players ever got a draw with Bobby Fischer) in the 1965 Capablanca Memorial in Havana Cuba, in which Bobby played by telex from the Marshall Chess Club since the US State Department banned travel to Cuba, his defeat of Korchnoi in Buenos Aires 1960 and his draw with Grandmaster Murray Chandler in New Zealand in 2006 at age 85. He died on 29 November 2008 in London.

OBJECTIVE COMMENT ON SOVIET CHESS

there are two books in the hardinge simpole range on chess in the ussr-one is written by two russian experts -insiders in the communist state supported system-the other-this book-is written by international master bob wade. wade visited the ussr many times and he played against many of their leading masters grandmasters and champions such as smyslov, botvinnik petrosian and tal. he studied their methods deeply and he imported many ussr training techniques into british chess where he became the national coach.
the soviet school of chess written by kotov and yudovich is the companion volume and it is a eulogy of soviet methods. wades account is written as an outsider but with comprehensive inside knowledge of how hard work and training achieved the almost total mastery of world chess exerted by the soviets until bobby fischer came along. when fischer challenged spassky in 1972 wade assisted fischer and armed with inside knowledge fischer famously won.
athough this book is a great tour de force it only takes the reader up to the heyday of soviet chess-it does not cover the fall of the greatest chess machine ever created in history when the soviet state collapsed nor does it caltalogue the subsequent phoenix like careers of karpov kasparov and kramnik.the latter two arising from the rubble of the soviet regime. however as a document of the great era of ussr chess achievements -when botvinnik smyslov petrosian spassky and tal ruled the roost-it can hardly be bettered!

Bob Wade, twice British champion and for decades chief junior coach of the British Chess Federation, was one of the driving forces behind the explosion of chess in England which led to three team silver medals in the chess Olympiads of 1984, 1986 and 1988 and to a British player, Nigel Short, challenging for the world title in 1993. Wade won the International Master title in his own right, and would doubtless have obtained a Grandmaster title under modern title stipulations. He is also a noted chess author and has been awarded the OBE for services to chess. Soviet Chess is best read along with Kotov & Yudovitch: The Soviet School of Chess. It is an examination of the Soviet chess machine but seen from the point of view of an expert outsider, fascinated by the training methods which were capable of identifying and nurturing talent up to grandmaster and world champion level on a consistent basis.
