Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell

In his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within.

Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others?

In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police.

Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.

Amazon.com Review
Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.

Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Best-selling author Gladwell (The Tipping Point) has a dazzling ability to find commonality in disparate fields of study. As he displays again in this entertaining and illuminating look at how we make snap judgments—about people's intentions, the authenticity of a work of art, even military strategy—he can parse for general readers the intricacies of fascinating but little-known fields like professional food tasting (why does Coke taste different from Pepsi?). Gladwell's conclusion, after studying how people make instant decisions in a wide range of fields from psychology to police work, is that we can make better instant judgments by training our mind and senses to focus on the most relevant facts—and that less input (as long as it's the right input) is better than more. Perhaps the most stunning example he gives of this counterintuitive truth is the most expensive war game ever conducted by the Pentagon, in which a wily marine officer, playing "a rogue military commander" in the Persian Gulf and unencumbered by hierarchy, bureaucracy and too much technology, humiliated American forces whose chiefs were bogged down in matrixes, systems for decision making and information overload. But if one sets aside Gladwell's dazzle, some questions and apparent inconsistencies emerge. If doctors are given an algorithm, or formula, in which only four facts are needed to determine if a patient is having a heart attack, is that really educating the doctor's decision-making ability—or is it taking the decision out of the doctor's hands altogether and handing it over to the algorithm? Still, each case study is satisfying, and Gladwell imparts his own evident pleasure in delving into a wide range of fields and seeking an underlying truth.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Gladwell, the author of 2000’s The Tipping Point, reaches to create another popular intellectual phenomenon by overturning received wisdom about how we make decisions. As in his articles for The New Yorker, where he works as a staff writer, the anecdotes throughout Blink are lively and entertaining. But the sheer quantity of stories about everything from sip tasters for Coca-Cola and the Pepsi challenge to gut reactions to "fake" art overwhelms the main theme of the book; many critics feel Gladwell isn’t entirely sure what his theme is. David Brooks of The New York Times Book Review sums up the critical consensus nicely: "If you want to trust my snap judgment, buy this book: you’ll be delighted. If you want to trust my more reflective second judgment, buy it: you’ll be delighted but frustrated, troubled and left wanting more."

Don't make a snap judgement buying this book
By E. Freeman
Well, as a huge fan of Gladwell's last book, The Tipping Point, I was excited last week to finally get my hands on his new effort: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. This time around Gladwell's basic thesis is that often snap judgements (what he calls "thin slicing") can be more accurate than well researched, careful analysis. Gladwell uses many examples (most are interesting) to demonstrate this behavior such as determining when art is faked, sizing up car buyers, picking presidential candidates and determining the characteristics of a person by observing their living space. This has always been Gladwell's talent: taking just-under-the-radar topics and bringing them into the public's view through great journalism and storytelling.

Gladwell is also careful to examine the flipside of this phenomenon: the times when "thin slicing" misleads us or gives us the wrong results. For instance, he presents examples where the mind works based on biases that don't necessarily enter the realm of conscious thought, but are nevertheless there (age, race, height, and so on).

It's a great topic and Gladwell sets it up with some wonderful examples, but then the book begins to have problems. First, the book is a little too anecdotal. Anyone who has ever had a 200-level psych class knows that what looks like cause and effect may be accounted for by an independent variable that wasn't considered (e.g., concluding cancer rates are higher in some area of the country because of pollution, when in fact the area has higher smoking rates as well). Given this, I found that too often conclusions are made on basic handwaving, or that important aspects of studies are not mentioned. For instance, Gladwell describes a study were observers are asked to determine certain characteristics (such as truthfulness, consciensciousness, etc.) of students by observing their dorm rooms; but, never does he mention how exactly one would determine these characteristics of individuals in a scientific manner for comparison. Such omissions leave the reader a little less than convinced.

Nevertheless, even with this flaw the first third of the book supports the thesis and makes for the usual entertaining reading; but things derail from there. The examples start to seem more peripheral: a rogue commander beating the conventional forces in a war game exercise, an artist known as Kenna who apparently should have made it big but didn't (why this example is interesting I've yet to figure out), and some rehash about coke vs pepsi from one of his older articles.

By the end of the book the whole thing derails into examples that just don't seem appropriate for the topic. Sure a study of why Pepsi always does better than Coke in blind tastes tests is interesting (and you can read his article on this without buying the book on Gladwell's web site), but does a study of "sips" vs "whole-can drinking" - people prefer sweet for sips (Pepsi) - really say something about unconscious rapid cognition?

One of Gladwell's greatest strengths is in recognizing interesting things, and then bringing them into conscious awareness so we actually realize these things are happening (whether it be tipping points or rapid cognition). I think he's partly achieved that in this book, but it doesn't come together the way the Tipping Point does. One gets the idea that this topic may have been better handled in an article rather than a full blown book.

Not an idea - a series of curious New Yorker articles
By Eric Antonow
The mistake was too try and get all of these wild animals onto the same boat. The book a series of semi-socio-scientific articles on insight and intuition. It is not a cohesive theory.

The writing is enjoyable - I read the most of it in a single plane flight. Some of the insights provide building blocks for understanding how certain professionals (people who practice a subject or skill for many years) are able to develop an additional sense about things -- gamblers, art curators, policemen. They are essentially seeing something that doesn't register at the conscious-level but provides them a gut-feel about the thing. Actually, I should say that these articles are how this MIGHT be happening - it's more speculation based on the diverse theories of a number of different researchers. Individually the stories and ideas are believable. Unfortuately, Gladwell fumbles in trying take them into some unified theory that is comprehensible let alone cohesive -- at times you wonder "where is he going with this?". Without that thread the indivudal beads get lost and fade into memory as clever ideas...and not much more. Without confidence in the grand idea, the individual pieces begin to feel simply exploratory. It's a shame because there are some remarkable ideas. He's a good documenter of curiousities of research (sort of like a Ken Burns is to historical things) so the storytelling is good enough for entertainment. Another reviewer likened it the addage about Chinese food, tasty but hungry an hour later. I agree. Flawed but still some interesting ideas to puzzle over.

Blink

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell book review
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell is a book about the power of first impressions in your unconscious. Malcolm Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, author, and speaker who has been writing for the New Yorker since 1996. The book takes you through many different stories all about what goes on behind the locked doors of your unconscious. Gladwell argues that we are thin slicing all the time – when we must judge an unfamiliar situation, meet a new person, interview a potential employee – that we take a small piece of a person or situation and can immediately make amazingly correct split second decisions. I believe that Gladwell very effectively makes this argument using data and examples.

The book starts off by explaining the amazing and rather mind blowing studys of John Gottman. Gottman, a marriage counselor, turns the seemingly complicated issue of divorce into a simple equation. Looking at just 30 minutes of a couples conversation, Gottman can predict with 95% accuracy if the couple will still be together 15 years later (21). Amazing right? From there the book moves quickly through various examples of thin slicing. From marriages and dating, to judging a prospective employee in a snap decision, Gladwell covers it all.

Firstly Gladwell uses data and studies to prove his argument that we are always thin slicing and doing so effectively. Back to Gottman’s study from earlier, Gladwell uses this data to prove to us that we don't need to spend hours days or weeks getting to know a couple before being able to effectively predict whether they will stay together or not. By taking a very thin slice of the couples conversation (30 min) Gottman can effectively predict if their marriage will last. Thus, proving to us that we do not need all the time or information in the world and that we can very effectively get the gist of something with only a small piece of information.

Secondly Gladwell uses true stories/anecdotes to prove that we can, in fact, effectively make quick snap judgments. Take Gladwell’s story in the introduction for example. He tells the story of how the Getty Museum was going to buy an ancient Greek statue. They did all the normal checks to make sure that the peace with authentic and it checked out. At the last minute they had an art historian come to take a look and in an instant he decided that it was a fake. “It just didn't look right” (9). Sure enough he was right. This, Gladwell argues, is proof of your brains amazing ability to make split-second decisions without actually having all the information you might think you need.

What Gladwell is saying in all of his stories is that we all have something in our brains that helps us to use the sum of all our experiences to make effective decisions without even knowing we are doing so. Your unconscious brain does it's best to give you information you might need about the situation. This lets your conscious brain focus on other things such as the actual task at hand, instead of the background information you didn't even know that you needed. Indeed, it's hard to grasp at first but by the fourth or fifth story he tells, you'll be able to fully understand what he means.

Overall, Gladwell very effectively argues that we have the ability to make correct split second decisions without knowing all we may think we need to know. Blink has proven to be a very interesting book (as it should be – it's won many awards) and is definitely worth reading.

The Cambridge Companion to Thomas Pynchon (Cambridge Companions to Literature)From Cambridge University Press

The most celebrated American novelist of the past half-century, an indispensable figure of postmodernism worldwide, Thomas Pynchon notoriously challenges his readers. This Companion provides tools for meeting that challenge. Comprehensive, accessible, lively, up-to-date and reliable, it approaches Pynchon's fiction from various angles, calling on the expertise of an international roster of scholars at the cutting edge of Pynchon studies. Part I covers Pynchon's fiction novel-by-novel from the 1960s to the present, including such indisputable classics as The Crying of Lot 49 and Gravity's Rainbow. Part II zooms out to give a bird's-eye-view of Pynchon's novelistic practice across his entire career. Part III surveys major topics of Pynchon's fiction: history, politics, alterity ('otherness'), and science and technology. Designed for students, scholars and fans alike, the Companion begins with a biography of the elusive author and ends with a coda on how to read Pynchon and a bibliography for further reading.

We must rely on our own smarts
By John L Murphy
This helpful compendium opens up for both specialists and generalists this "difficult" writer's works. It encourages us to enter the discussion about them. My review sums up the contents of a compact but valuable resource. Given that the chronology of Pynchon's life and works by John M. Kraft must be far sketchier than that for perhaps any other living author, Kraft sensibly concludes after summing up what can be verified: "We hardly need to know the life to appreciate the works."

As the introduction by editors Inger H. Dalsgaard, Luc Herman, and Brian McHale reminds us, their "Pyndustry" formed to dissect Pynchon's fiction need not be as hermetic as it may seem to the outsider. "It is the sense of sharing in a collective enterprise of readers that transforms a cult of insiders into a community." With only his works to study, the author absent, we are "left to our own devices". This 2012 anthology aims at fellow academics, but it provides a more accessible guide to the canon, poetics, and issues than monographs devoted to recondite topics.

Part I surveys the canon. "Early Pynchon" by Herman examines the first stories and racial themes and revision in V. It's a limited look at that novel, but many contributors agree that Pynchon's 1963 full-length debut represents but a frenetic trial run for the two "masterpieces" that would follow.

Although dismissed by the author as a misfire, his first, The Crying of Lot 49, appears alongside Vineland and Inherent Vice as a California novel. (Pynchon's newest, Bleeding Edge, reviewed by me on its appearance Sept. 17, 2013, burrows into congenial tales of attempts to break out of the "meatworld" and the crackdown that follows not only a counterculture but the start-ups. Bleeding Edge draws Pynchon back from his adopted Golden State to his native New York, but post-9/11, it entangles wired technology hatched and incubated in Silicon Valley.) Thomas Hill Schaub locates "New Age libertarianism" rather than "liberal pluralism" as the Californian novels' political stance. He tracks the "consensus" for the 1964-71 period they evoke. Lot 49 traces a "secret withdrawal" from conformity, appearing in 1966’s flower-power promise. The other two novels track state backlash, and from the rueful benefit of hindsight, they from their publication in respectively 1990 and 2009 lament the passing of communal alternatives and individual initiative during the rise of Nixon and Reagan, as sinister forces regroup to compromise or marginalize those who tried to fight the power.

Gravity's Rainbow is rooted in Pynchon's service to this same state, in his 1960-62 career as a technical writer in Seattle at Boeing. Steven Weisenburger documents Pynchon's role in the bureaucratic complicity that enables the military and such corporations to ally with global economies and murderous technology. Rocket World's domination, in Pynchon's 1973 indictment of mass death, proves how the post-war national security state follows the Second World War's operations, carried out by a "Power Elite's relentless sovereignty". Ethical or practical resistance by a few may be admirable, but given the fate of many in Gravity's Rainbow it appears such stances remain quixotic.

Certainly Mason & Dixon plots this tension between rationalization and imagination, the little guy versus the big picture. This relentless push of modernization and profit, as America championed in colonial times, captures a period which changed "all from subjunctive to declarative, reducing Possibilities to Simplicities that serve the ends of Governments". Such an eighteenth-century style and orthography of this 1997 epic enlivens Pynchon's exploration of another historical epoch. While less immediate than the mid-twentieth century, Kathryn Hume explains, this period also pits protagonists against a world-system of intricate "lines" laid down by mathematicians and surveyors to extend imperialist ambitions. Slavery, mystery, and science contend. Layers and networks, typical elements of Pynchon's fiction, give clues and orient or disorient readers within such complex webs.

Widening the rampage of overlying overlords in Against the Day to roam thirty years around the turn of the last century, the pre-WWI foundation for that similarly immense 2009 send-up of early twentieth-century literary genres defines Menippean satire. Bernard Duyfhuizen tallies 170 characters and at least a dozen pastiches of fictional categories in its sprawl. Its "dime novel" elements involving silent-era film in Los Angeles, as this critic astutely cites, anticipate the cinematic hard-boiled patter and louche gumshoe satire of Inherent Vice set fifty years later on the coast near that same city. They also, typical for Pynchon as his novels unfolded, overlap, as the Traverse family introduced in Vineland edges Against the Day into an earlier work as published, even as it hints ahead via its anarchistic struggles to hippie reactions against capitalism in the California novels, chronologically.

After overviews of the major texts, Part II elucidates poetics. David Cowart's investigation of literary history enlivens the author's promise. "Pynchon seduces the reader with something like the big picture: read this and you'll understand the age and its enormities." Cowart wonders if Pynchon leads the way in innovation, away from modernist tropes, or whether he responds to endemic cultural trends. The evidence marshaled favors Pynchon as leading the way, although Cowart appears to strain credulity when attempting to attribute prescience to the appearance of Pynchon's novels within years or stages of political upheaval or social unrest. What seems more convincing is that by Vineland the quest narrative--however unfulfilled--in his previous novels diminishes amid "increasing difficulty". Pynchon while lightening his tone and intensity somewhat by the 1990s intensifies his range. His target widens as his novels grow encyclopedic. Melville created one such narrative; Pynchon, many.

Delving into theory, the following essays prefer a more professorial, less playful stance. McHale sums up postmodernism adroitly. He links Christopher Jencks' "double-coding" within architectural designs winking at those in the know while delighting or puzzling the general public to Pynchon's blend of high-art themes and pop-culture references. McHale argues that postmodern ontology, a concern with being, replaces the modernist search for epistemology, to address meaning. Cowart concurs that the early quests of V. and Lot 49 have disintegrated by Gravity's Rainbow; that work ends with explosions, dispersions, and reversions. Erasures, forking paths, nesting, layers all fool characters--and any who attempt to navigate and master the labyrinth.

Pynchon's intertexts, as David Seed charts, exhibit their own twists and turns. Characters and themes start to blur and shape-shift. The final essays gathered in Part III under Issues can drift into their own hermetic recesses. Sometimes theory overwhelms the application to specific passages in the texts. If a chapter on humor, which gains all but five citations in the index, might have substituted or supplemented this section, its inclusion would have leavened the seriousness of this section. Pynchon's wordplay, songs, and slang, and his inherent vice that drives him to keep his awful or sly punchlines coming do not earn the depth they deserve here. Amy J. Elias for history, Jeff Baker for politics, Deborah L. Madsen for alterity, and Dalsgaard for science and technology, all the same, offer directions to suggest deeper pursuits for these respectable topics.

In a coda of "how to read Pynchon", Hanjo Berressem notes how readers responded critically during each stage of Pynchon's trajectory. The prophet of doom and miscommunication appeared ready for the Space Age amidst its countercultural flight from the threats "slouching towards universal disorder, heat-death, noise and, ultimately, to near-static". The post-structuralist craze found deconstructionists thrilled with a "violently centripetal" lurch into futility, disorder, and self-referential metafiction.

By the 1990s, the changes during the Reagan administration may have tempered such critical frenzy. Pynchon's sensitivity to the realities of contemporary life, beyond satire, puns, puzzles, and irony, turned some to reconsider the aesthetic arguments within his novels. The progression in the humanities over the next fifteen years towards New Historicism placed Pynchon's fiction within the "complete counter-history of America" in its mission to (as Mason and Dixon dramatizes) "save the realm of the fictional from the forces of relentless factualization and rationalization".

Some critics here propose that reading Pynchon, we can follow his example to challenge the system that supplants our initiative with a perpetual commodification of our dreams and desires for fulfillment. Bleeding Edge continues this critique, but it too shrinks back from any clear resolution of its own shaggy-dog plot. Those who seek in Pynchon's passages an escape from their mundane concerns may find that the paths fork and bend back into our own reality with its often elusive lack of lasting satisfaction. Like his protagonists, Pynchon appears to remind us, in his absence from advising us, that we must rely on our own smarts, arrayed against mystery and cynicism and corruption. As the editors of "A Cambridge Companion to Thomas Pynchon" conclude in their collective, even utopian, ambition to scope out this reclusive writer's ascent and flight patterns: "We are all in this together."

Dangerous
By infj_I_am
I really wanted to like this book upon reading all the rave reviews. I eagerly opened it when it arrived imagining it would contain helpful "baby exercises" based on the latest neurological research that would help me encourage my child towards healthy development. I did my best to ignore the arrogant/self-righteous tone carried through by the author during the introduction, but was considerably disappointed to find nothing but banal generalizations and self-aggrandizing remarks about his program. Example: "Michelle has the time of her life all day long. (So do all the other kids)". Forgive me but, Michelle doesn't sound human! It's human to not have the time of your life *perpetually* doing acrobatics and reciting indoctrinated "encyclopedic knowledge" "all day long". A critical reader will immediately begin to suspect grandiosity and gross exaggeration on behalf of the author from remarks like these, but all this could be forgiven if it were not simultaneously juxtaposed with a not so subtle undertone of looking down on non-programmed "average" kids. It's this tone that comes out strongly in the charts - appending a number - along with helpful advice that, if a child hasn't achieved a certain physical feat by a certain time frame a good parent should "seek professional help" and also classify their children as "slow" (i.e, if they don't crawl by 5 months). Might I ask whose professional help one should seek? The author's online repository of medicating materials?

All this seems innocuous until you get to the real kicker: "Sometimes, at this stage, babies cry when crawling. This is good, not bad. They're crying for a reason. The fast, deep respiration of crying actually gives them the additional oxygen they need to make easier the movement of their arms and legs for crawling." Please, parents, stop and read this statement again and ask yourself - when you hear your child crying - the only thing they can do to let you know something causes them pain, stress, or discomfort - aside from this "medical advice" - what does your God given heart and mind guide you to do? For me, it's to soothe my child. That's my first job as a parent; not raising my baby's cortisol levels and, forgive me but - traumatizing them and betraying their trust.

When I got to that sentence, I really started treating the book with great skepticism. Who was this author, and what had any of his pupils achieved? The author was a combat infantry officer in World War II; he's not a doctor, no, not even really a real researcher - he's a man whose experiences have been largely shaped by an organization whose job it is to break grown adults and turn them into highly efficient killing machines. I have no doubt he means well - he put his own son through his program - but, for all that, what has his son achieved? He's got an associates in Biology and a bachelor's in History and went no further than his father's institute. All that for crawling at 3 1/2 months. Furthermore, though little is known of the children that went through his institution - he tells us quite a bit about their parents - who, presumably did not: they are NASA engineers and a myriad of government officials, none of whom can play the violin. Now, ask yourself - if this is meant as a compliment to the parents - who did NOT use these methods presumably, then, doesn't the question arise - are these methods necessary? We hear great exaggerations of how well these children do in early life; but, what about later? Does the conditional love and neglect to their feelings take a toll on their psychological development? Is it worth it - this?

I asked my Mom about how she raised my 2 sisters and I. Apparently we were all very "slow" babies in that we did not crawl until about a year old, and did not walk till about 15 months. Depraved, I know! My elder sister was valedictorian and went to Harvard, I went to Duke. My younger sister is the only one who crawled then walked, and she has frequently struggled in school. I asked my sister, out of curiosity, if out of her friends she knew of any who had used these methods (out of her Harvard friends); out of the doctors she knew, she did not know of any.

I guess I'm writing this review more for myself. I got this book hoping to give my kid a head start. While I am sure it is good to encourage crawling, for my part, I'm not going to assign my kid a number. I'm not going to force them, or show them lack of empathy: not when they are so young and vulnerable - not ever, I remember what it was like when my parents enrolled us in a gymnastic academy (one of the few ways out of the 3rd world country we lived in) - and I remember seeing parents almost out right torture their kids via these "instructors" all the while thinking they were bettering their chances of success in life (specifically there, in sports). Those institutions were nothing but torture-chambers - attracting the very worst of parents: the ones who, having achieved little in life themselves -pushed and pushed their kids to become the "performers" they could not.

We all die. The point of our life is to show each other love, compassion, and to do good for the world. Encourage your kids to exercise. Encourage them to succeed. But if you find yourself, even for a moment as I did, staring at a ranking system built by human pride, and the desire to "rise above" your fellow man - the men and women God gave to you as your support network - not adversaries - but your deepest friends - then, you've gone far off course.

Don't let your baby cry.

Mind numbingly boring, might have good info
By Leanne
My chiropractor recommended that I read this book as I had asked him for information on retained primitive reflexes. I'm sure there may be a gold mine of information in this book, but the author is so busy talking about himself that it would take a treasure hunter to find it. I ended up downloading 10 Gems for the Brain and will use that - it outlines all the exercises, illustrates how to do them, and even tells you in what order to do them with no fluff or life story added.

Who cares what the sceptics think?
By K. Lovett
For those of you out there that believe the object of this book series is to "pressure" your children into becoming college professors you obviously are either not paying attention or never read the book. At NO time does the book suggest tying down your child to a chair and forcing him/her to learn to (read, arithmetic, etc...) In fact it clearly states the opposite to STOP immediately if the child is not having fun.

I believe instead that the main point of the book is to love and bond with your child (what more does a child want than Mommy and Daddy's attention?) And that the world is full of amazing wonderful things that he/she has the potential to do whatever he/she wants to do.

My father (using his own techniques - the daily newspaper) taught me to read at 2 years old and I remember (yes I remember clearly) that it was so much fun to read to Daddy about the upcoming union worker strike.

I don't care what career my child chooses.. I just want him to be happy and have the same appreciation for the world of knowledge that surrounds us.

Concordant Literal New Testament (Paperback)From Concordant Publishing Concern

The Introduction states: Since men carry over the truth into another language only so far as they grasp it themselves, no translation can be fully satisfactory. The compiler of this version, the late A. E. Knoch, was aware of his shortcomings in this regard. To keep from emphasizing his personal views and traditional errors, he developed the concordant method of translation. The purpose of the compiler was to make a translation that agreed as closely as possible to the original language, yet be presented in readable English. This method recognizes the importance of the vocabulary of Scripture keeping distinct the well-chosen words of God in His revelation of truth. There is an effort to keep to a minimum the confusion resulting from translating different Greek words with only one English word. Thus, phileo is rendered "be fond" and agapao is rendered "love." Except for a few idiomatic usages, each English word stands for only one Greek word in this version. The word order and sentence structure of the early Greek manuscripts are followed more in this version than in most others... From the Publishers: "Our research efforts are centered upon the many issues involved in discovering the meaning of the original Scripture declarations themselves. Then we seek to determine how we may best translate these same Scriptures, endeavoring to do so objectively, accurately, and consistently. Our translation principles, both of vocabulary and grammatical analysis, govern all that we do. ______ Paperback version. Does not have keyword concordance.

A great resource for you
By trevor
what can I say, this book is the next best thing if, like me, you are unable to read ancient greek. this book puts a very precice translation fo the new testament at your fingertips, easily allowing you to see what words are actually translated from greek and what words are simlpy added to make the english translation readable. I highly reccomend this to anyone who has interest in the New Testament.

Very good literal translation from what I have read so far
By Matthew Chambers
Very good literal translation from what I have read so far! It clarifies a lot of difficult passages by maintaining original word order and verb tenses :) Its accurate translation of Aion and aionios is a pleasure to see, and avoids some confusing doctrine which arises from their loose translation. It is slightly bizarre sounding to someone who is very accustomed to a popular translation's word usage. An example is the translation of Gospel as Evangel etc. Overall it is solid, but I look forward to studying from the Rotherham's Emphasized Bible soon also!
Peace in Christ!

One of the most comprehensive books in quantitative finance
By Grateful Reader
I have been using this book since I was a graduate student and, now working as a quant, I always keep it handy. The various techniques I have learned from this book helped me to solve a lot of problems related to financial engineering which I have encountered in my both academic and professional career. The book covers a lot of advanced material, most of which is original and unique, starting from pricing path-dependent options in the discrete binomial model up to pricing path-dependent volatility products under stochastic volatility models. I will briefly go through the content of the book and make appropriate comments.

Chapters 1- 4) The author introduces the sufficient background which is necessary to solve financial problems arising by pricing and risk-managing of derivative securities, in particular, the stochastic calculus and backward/forward partial differential equations (PDE). By itself these topics are nowadays extremely broad and cannot be fully developed even within a series of books. In this book, only important results are given (and references for more specific texts are provided); these results will further be applied throughout the book and they include: basic properties of Brownian motion, connection between the diffusion problems and solutions to backward and forward Kolmogoroff equations, Ito's lemma, solution of SDE-s by discretization, solving PDE-s with Laplace and Fourier transforms, eigenfunction expansion.

In chapter 4, the author does tangentially mention about numerical solutions of PDE-s. Here, it is important to note that PDE numerical solution methods are outside of the scope of this book, although the author almost always presents the problem as a solution to certain PDE so a relevant PDE solver can always be applied, the main scope of this book are analytical methods for solving PDEs. However, the author does illustrate the Crank-Nicolson and Crayg-Sneyd ADI scheme, which are the methods of choice (whether robust or not) at the majority of Wall Street firms.

Chapters 5-6) The author fully develops the binomial model and carefully explains no-arbitrage pricing principles. What is important and, perhaps, is unique in his treatment of the binomial model is that he describes extensions of the model to the so-called implied trees, and, which is very important for pricing exotic options in the binomial model, he describes the augmentation principle to price path-dependent options, including American, asian, barrier, and lookback options.

Chapters 7-9) The author studies continuous time dynamics for FOREX evolution (although by no means is the treatment specific only to FOREX) and pricing principles for European options. He applies various techniques from applied mathematics to solve a variety of pricing problems, including multi-dimensional problems, in an efficient way. These highly useful techniques include non-dimensionalization, Laplace and Fourier transforms, approximations, Green's functions, or the state-price densities in the jargon of finance texts, which are extremely important for solving problems (and building analytics) in their generality .

Chapter 10) It is well known that often the pure log-normal model is not satisfactory in practice for pricing and risk-management of derivative deals. To go beyond the Black-Scholes model, the author introduces and discusses a number of possible alternative models for FOREX evolution and shows how to treat these alternative models efficiently using a variety of mathematical tools. In particular, he develops the analytics for the Heston model and derives perturbative expansions for general stochastic volatility models. He also uses this expansion to analyze the properties of the Heston model

Chapter 11) I think this is one of the most comprehensive treatments of options with American and Bermudian exercise. The author shows how to solve the problem using PDE, integral equation and approximation methods.

Chapters 12-13) These two chapters provide an extremely useful technique for solving a number of complicated problems arising by pricing path-dependent options. The author develops one of the most useful techniques for solving pricing problems of exotic options (and which is completely missing from other quant books) - the augmentation principle that involves introduction of the auxiliary variable describing some functional of the process (for example, its average, maximum, crossing times etc) and augmentation of the pricing PDE with an additional dimension representing the evolution of this auxiliary variable. This augmentation technique is applied to solve a number of problems including pricing of barrier, asian, lookback, Parisian, passport options etc. Let me also note that passport options were originated from the Bankers Trust and the author played a leading role in developing analytics, which is very thoroughly introduced in the book, for these products. He also describes some departures from the log-normal model and shows how to apply alternative models, for example, Heston and CEV models for pricing path-dependent options.

Chapter 13 provides one of the most comprehensive in the existing quant literature analytics for path-dependent options. I strongly disagree with one of the reviewers that the author does not explain the Heston model and I point out that the book the reviewer is referring to does not include application of Heston model to pricing forward-start options and options on the asset realized variance. The pricing of European options under the Heston model is by now well documented (needless to say that the author was one of the first to introduce now widely used pricing formula involving one integral as opposed to the original formula including two integrals), however in practice the Heston model is most often applied for pricing volatility products (forward-starts and options on the realized asset variance) and the author does develop the necessary analytics to solve these problems, the part which is missing from existing texts.

Finally, Chapter 14 discusses some advanced topics - hedging under model parameter misspecifications, liquidity risks, and counterparty defaults.

What makes working on this book enjoyable and rewarding (I must note that it is not a book for after-lunch reading but for hard studying) is that never does the author leave important steps in his derivations omitting rather lengthy but trivial results "for the sake of brevity". Also all author's derivations and conclusions are self-consistent and no external references are made to derive or substantiate a proposition so that you are never stuck with a problem for which you have to consult other texts (the practice which is often abused in most of the quant finance texts).

To conclude, the author, who is one of the top Wall Street quants and applied mathematicians, does not give you a ready solution, discuss a "model calibration" and provide with "code examples", instead he teaches you how to apply the best suited techniques to solve specific problems and makes you participate in his discussion by filling the gaps. For graduate students I can tell that the experience and analytical stamina you get after working on this book are much more valuable in your professional career perspective than all that "light" stuff, including model calibration and implied volatility parametrization, which you will read from some other "quant" books - you will quickly pick that up once you have started your professional quant career.

A rare insight into the mathematics of derivatives
By Aleksandar Mijatovic
Alex Lipton's Mathematical Methods for Foreign Exchange: A Financial Engineer's Approach is a comprehensive study of models used in practice for the pricing and hedging of derivatives. Despite the focus on foreign exchange, the methods detailed in the work go far beyond FX to apply to a number of other asset classes (e.g. equity, commodity, and some fixed income and credit derivatives). The core of the book applies the theory of parabolic partial differential equations to solve a vast number of problems that arise in the pricing of European and path-dependent options. It is difficult to find all the methods covered in the book treated in one place, and many are not documented elsewhere.

The emphasis is on a mathematical treatment that highlights the structure of the problems at hand, not on numerical solutions to these problems. Important though numerical solutions are in their own right, they are far less illuminating in understanding the problem itself, and can easily be obtained with the appropriate mathematical tools, developed in this book, at one's disposal. The value of the work is further enhanced by the meticulous referencing and extensive bibliography that it provides.

Having worked in the industry as a quant in foreign exchange, and in academia, I can strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in a rigorous mathematical treatment of the problems arising in the pricing and hedging of derivatives.

A Book That Was Long Overdue
By A Customer
Most of the books on mathematical finance fall in one of the two domains. Some books are written for people who are new to the field and, as such, do not go deeply into the mathematical details that are crucial for implementing these methods in practice. The more advanced books are usually written by academic mathematicians and sometimes suffer from poor readability and lack of awareness of relevant problems. What many people are looking for is a detailed and readable description of how to apply the latest mathematical methods to solving the problems appearing in day-to-day work of derivatives desks. Such books are few and far between: that is why Alex Lipton's manuscript was so welcome.
As a quant in one of the Wall Street investment banks, I found this book a very valuable resource. Though written on a fairly high level, this book remains a readable and consistent exposition of latest methods of foreign exchange modeling. I particularly appreciated that the author does not skip steps in his derivations and gives out all those little practical details that are so important to people planning to use these methods in their work. The range of topics covered is fairly wide, with main emphasis on derivative pricing. I found the two chapters on path-dependent options to be particularly interesting and extensive. Some of the results included in the book came out of author's original work at Deutsche Bank. I also had an impression that some of his latest work was not included in the book, which is a pity.
All in all, an excellent book. Well worth the price.
