Radiation Protection and Dosimetry serves as an essential handbook for practicing health physics professionals, and is also ideal as a teaching text for courses at the university level. The book is organized to introduce the reader to basic principles of radiation decay and interactions, to review current knowledge and historical aspects of the biological effects of radiation, and to cover important operational topics such as radiation shielding and dosimetry. In addition to presenting the most up to date treatment of the topics and references to the literature, most chapters contain numerical problems with their solutions for use in teaching or self assessment. One chapter is devoted to Environmental Health Physics, which was written in collaboration with leading professionals in the area.

About the Author
Michael Stabin received a PhD in nuclear engineering (health physics emphasis) from the University of Tennessee in 1996 and a Master of Engineering and bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in 1983 and 1981. He worked for 15 years (1983 to 1998) at the Radiation Internal Dose Information Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, held a visiting professor position from 1998 to 2000 in Recife, Brazil, and currently works as an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He serves on the editorial staffs of the Health Physics Journal, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and the Journal of Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals. He is the author of numerous research articles and textbook chapters regarding radiation dose models and calculations, particularly in the area of nuclear medicine.

Much needed book

This is a much needed book. I good modern overview of what you would encounter in the field of radiation protection and dosimetry. The coverage of standards and their development is often missed in other works. Since you will spend a great deal of time referring to these standards knowing the actors and history is important. As someone in the field I would have liked to have seen a little more on international standards development. It was very refreshing to see a text where equations were defined clearly. So many physics books seem to revel in making you figure out that particulars authors flavor of equation definition.
I have found the book to be a great general reference and starting point for those new to the field. It is actually an enjoyable read. And having a joke thrown in once and a while was great.

Excellent, well-written book

This is an excellent book for students of radiation protection and dosimetry. It provides a great overview of health physics from radioisotope decay to non-ionizing radiation. The technical content is balanced with good practical examples. I would like to recommend this book for anyone studying health physics or preparing for the certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Clear and accessible

As a grad student you are looking for clear and concise instruction for the subject you are learning. I've got experience with a number of technical books in the physics field and this is the most accessible one I've encountered yet. The author lingers over important point and doesn't waste time on derivations when not necessary. Even if you are assigned a different book for a course in Health Physics or Radiation Protection, picking this one up as a reference will serve you well.

Such an informing and impressive book! Making a decision can be easy but making the right decision can be critical. This book will help you make smarter ways in making a decision. The guides are very comprehensible as how to weigh things before making that decision in a situation you're in. Has sound advice on its methods used when making critical thinking. This is really worth reading book!

Horribly written & NOT at all helpful

I don't understand all of these positive reviews, the author must have a large family! The first ~75% of the book is just describing how important it is to think outside the box and how everybody should practice this.... No Kidding! Give me some steps, guidance, I'm already sold on the concept. I found NOTHING useful between the covers of this book. Aside from that, the horrendous grammar and poor writing make it painful to trudge through. I really wanted to like it, but it's impossible. I won't even resell this to Half Price books - no one should have to read this!

About the Author
Edgar Cayce grew up in poverty and achieved only an eighth-grade education. By the time he was a teenager he was able to memorize an entire book simply by placing it near his head when he slept. As an adult, Cayce discovered that while in a trance he could diagnose illnesses. His medical readings, which were years ahead of their time, have been proven to be 90 percent accurate. His abilities helped him become a world-renowned psychic.

Use as intended and see results

These two volumes in one are meant to be studied in a group environment. (For groups in your area, contact the Association for Research and Enlightenment, the Edgar Cayce Foundation at [...]) The groups usually meet once a week and discuss a chapter or part of a chapter. There are online groups as well.

I went to these meetings for close to ten years and it was a wonderful experience. I met some great people and we used the books as a foundation for spiritual growth in a unique fellowship. It is great as either an alternative or an adjuvant to church. For those who have issues with churches because of the inconsistencies and contradictions, this can be a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend it. You can also get a lot out of these books studying by yourself, but it's more fun with a group. It is great spiritual nourishment either way.

Our soul is a portion of the Divine

Books I and II--here combined in one volume--are based on so-called readings dictated by the sleeping prophet Edgar Cayce (EC) in weekly sessions witnessed by members of a study group from 1931 to 1942. This work may represent the gold standard, ten out of ten, of extrasensory prophetic wisdom revealed in the 20th century. Students of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) would probably contest that claim but although a son of Cayce (Hugh Lynn) had some interest in ACIM for a time, the theology of ACIM is radically different from that of the Cayce material. Most Christians whose theology is orthodox would--if they had an open mind and spirit--find that much of the Cayce readings in this book conform to traditional biblical doctrine and Christology. In contrast, very few Christians would be able to reconcile their beliefs with those presented in ACIM.

Christian apologists are virtually unanimous in their classification of the Cayce material as fraudulent, coming from a psychic deceiver or at best coming from a folksy down-home goodness-to-gracious man deceived by demonic spirits, the father of lies. Sceptics of the religious and/or the psychic are just as condemnatory. Reversely, Cayce apologists defend all the material and actvity purportedly associated with EC. The cures that didn't work, the prophecies that didn't come true, the questionable hucksterism pursued by EC's handlers and the later compromises by ARE of EC's doctrinal positions are by them glossed over, forgotten or rationalized. Enlightenment is not served by extremism.

The collection of EC readings should not be elevated to a level of divine infallibility. Nor should it be dismissed wholesale as either irrelevant opportunistic illusion or demonically induced deception. Unbiased research would establish that much good, inspirational and practical benefit has been the result of EC's legacy and very little harm has occurred. The ridiculing, the fear-mongering and derisive condemnations emanating from religious fanatics and materialistic sceptics have definitely not fostered social tolerance, brotherly love or peaceful coexistence, and never will. I am persuaded that the readings upon which this book is based are in accord with the highest of human and divine motives and ideals. This book could play a major role as a bridge for dialogue, tolerance and understanding between Christian fundamentalism and progressive universalist spirituality. Unfortunately, modern phariseeism continues to stand in the way.

A few excerpts are telling about its Christian wisdom: "Love is that inexplicable force which brought Jesus to earth so that through Him the way back to the Father might be made plain to the children of men." pp 124 "Seek God where he may be found, even in the heart of a neighbor. How well do we know God? Just as well as we seek to know and understand our fellow human beings, and just as well as we seek to magnify the divine consciousness in them." pp 68 "Truth may be proved only by results. If we would be led by the Spirit that leads into all truth, we may expect to have many opportunities for proof in our own life. We alone can judge as to that which is truth for ourselves." pp 183 "All power, all force is in Him, and is subject to His will. In Him is the light that we should seek, that we in body, mind, soul and purpose, may be one with Him. He is the Way!" pp 188 "The purpose for which our soul chose to come into this earth plane was to awaken the Divine within, which is done through manifesting the fruits of the spirit toward our fellow humans." pp 198 "Our soul is a portion of the Divine. It is a moving influence in our activities throughout our experiences in all spheres of consciousness. Our soul is a universe within self. Will is an attribute of the soul, and with it we choose to develop either to a oneness with Universal Consciousness or in opposition to It." pp 217-218 "Through the example set by the Christ, we know the way. The choice is made daily by each soul to follow the Light or seek selfish gratification." pp 251

About the Author
Jules Watson was born in Western Australia to English parents. After gaining degrees in archaeology and public relations, she worked as a freelance writer in both Australia and England. Jules and her Scottish husband divided their time between the U.K. and Australia before finally settling in the wild Highlands of Scotland. She is the author of the Dalriada trilogy—The White Mare, The Dawn Stag, and The Song of the North—a series of historical epics set in ancient Scotland about the wars between the Celts and the invading Romans. Kirkus Reviews named The White Mare among the top ten science fiction/fantasy releases of 2005, and The Song of the North was featured as a “Hot Read” in the Kirkus special science fiction/fantasy edition of 2008.

This doesn't hold a candle to Sevenwaters

This is the first, and probably the last, book I'll be reading by this author. I picked it up because I love a tragic love story, and I love Celtic lore. I suppose I was expecting something with the same feel of the Sevenwaters books, and that was way too high a bar for me to have set.

I thought it seemed a bit more obsessed with sex than reading the cover had led me to believe, and found myself somewhat embarrassed for the author when I read about Deirdre being molested by the wind early on in the book. It really seemed out of place in here.

I kept at it, though, and found throughout it that I had a great deal of difficulty identifying with or caring about a single one of the characters. I managed to keep going out of righteous feminist anger on Deirdre's behalf, I suppose, since there was so much about who she belonged to, and demanding her lover to give her up without anyone ever suggesting that she had any say whatsoever in her own fate.

I disliked her as a character, because I would have preferred to read about a flawed, human character than this person who speaks with the voice of the goddess and is therefore always right. I thought most people preferred characters they could relate to rather than paragons of beauty and wisdom, but maybe I was mistaken.

Not at all what I expected

This was my first experience with this particular writer, and I have to say that I was deeply disappointed. What I had expected to read was a celtic lore love story. What i got, for lack of a better term, was a bodice ripping romance novel. I completely lost the story of the main character as the world of lust and passion crashed in from all sides. I read the entire novel in hopes that the story I had thought I would find was buried in the folds, but unfortunately, the best part was when the book was finally over. Perhaps this is just the authors style, but as a heads up for anyone who is interested, this book is less about adventurer folklore and more about the bedroom scene then the cover or back summery would dare to suggest.

Mythical and enchanting read

The Swan Maiden is a novel based on the Irish legend of "Deirdre of the Sorrows", written by J.M. Synge. When Deirdre was a babe, the druid Cathbad prophesied that she would grow into a great beauty and bring about the downfall of their land. Ignoring requests that the babe be killed, the King of the Ulaids, Conor decides to hide the child with plans to marry her when she becomes of age. Conor enlists the help of Levercham, who teaches Dierdre the ways of the Druids. Attempts to dissuade Conor from his mission of marrying Deirdre fail time and again, much to Levercham's dismay. When Dierdre hears of this, she can no longer wait around, being fattened up like a pig for the day when Conor comes to collect her. She runs away and crosses paths with three brothers, Red Branch soldiers famous for their fighting skills, and they decide to help her. When Conor hears that Deirdre has fled and who she is with, he is beyond furious and pulls no stops to get her back. Naisi and Deirdre eventually fall in love and despite the brothers' aching for home and their fellow Red Branch soldiers, they find a place of their own and settle in (for a while at least). They are found and persuaded home with the promises of forgiveness, only to be betrayed by their King, again. The rest you should read for yourself, I don't want to give it all away!

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book!!! See, I even put three exclamation points after that sentence, just to make sure you grasp the emotion! Ha!

What I really enjoyed about The Swan Maiden was the way Jules writes about the connection with nature and animals that Deirdre feels. She describes scenes and it's like you're there (or at least you really, really want to be). I could even stomach the hunting scenes which I usually skim over. So many descriptive words come to mind when I think about this book - mythical, surreal, spiritual, magical, echanting. And the love between Deirdre and Naisi...aaahhh pure magic....the connection they have with each other is so powerful and Jules writes it so well!!

Readers you are in for a treat with this one, you will not want to put it down! Thanks to Jules Watson for sharing such a wonderful story with me, one that I'll remember for a long time!
