About the Author

Petr Beckmann was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1924. Until 1963, he worked as a research scientist for the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, when he was invited as a Visiting Professor to the University of Colorado, where he decided to stay permanently as professor of electrical engineering. He has authored eleven books and more than fifty scientific papers, mostly on probability theory and electromagnetic wave propagation.

A Nice Insightful Book on Mathematics

One of the reviewers complained about this book's continuous digressions. Well, you must know before reading this book that mathematicians were never great historians. Dr Beckmann is a professor of Electrical Engineering and this is more in the Physics side. This makes him potentially worse of a historian. But then would you please stop for a second and tell me what you want to know in a book about "Pi!"
I know I want to know almost anything there is about it. I want to know its origin, how people dealt with it in ancient days, and how people are dealing with it nowadays or in the past 100 year. Do not be mystified, for this number was known long long ago.
Then what is wrong with digressions? We want to know as much as possible, don't we? I saw that Dr Beckmann insights were all interesting. You would say, "Oh, yeah, another one of those geeky mathematicians." But I would only answer that I hate computers but read the section about applying the computer in computing new digits of this strange number.
This number appears in so many places in mathematics. The most famous is in the formula relating the circumference of the circle to the radius. And it appears in so many other sciences. It was the passion of so many amateur mathematicians to compete in the memorization of as many as a million digits after the decimal point.

A readable history of pi for high school algebra students...

The math in this book will not intimidate the reader, and the general audience with a high school algebra or geometry course can find something interesting in almost all portions of the book. (It was here that I learned that pi is not simply "irrational," it is also "transcendental"--that is, not capable of being a root of any algebraic formula.) The time format runs from 2000 BC to 1970s AD, when computers could be developed and used in order to compute values of pi. My little PC can compute 3000 digits of pi in less than a second, using Mathematica.

I had only one reservation about the book, which is the author's abhorence of organized religions. He states several times that Christianity held science and math back through the post Roman Empire era until the Englightenment ages. He is harshest on Christianity, but he also reserves a few hard barbs for the Persian and Muslim leaders. I thought that the author's heartfelt views on religion distracted the reader from his mathematical insights about Pi.

Amazon also sells a competing book, Alfred S. Posamentier and Ingmar Lehmann, Pi: A biography of the world's most mysterious number (Prometheus Books, 2004). That book has more "real" math in it, and less about the role of organized religion.

About the Author
Douglas Hensley grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio listening to his dad tell legends and stories about ghosts and hauntings in the hills of Kentucky. A very interesting book!

This is a great book; It is manufactured well, and is a fascinating read. I think it makes a great gift for those with an interest in History, because it is probably something that they don't have!

I leave the book on my bookshelf in my office (with the cover facing up) and people are always coming over and paging through it. It makes a great conversation piece.

It is bound nicely, with a faux leather end piece, and a solid and "weathered looking" cover piece. It would not look out of place in any nice library.

I opened it in a bookstore as a joke, but was quickly drawn in to the characters and quotes within.

Hmmmmmm - Makes you think and live differently.....

When I first held this tiny book in my hand I thought, "Yeah, so?" and then I started to read. Author Ray Robinson has collected these "last words" and contents he can't be absolutely sure these were exactly the last words AND the words - all of them - have a lesson within them.

It is fair to say these last words could even prove to be life changing for readers. It made me think "What do I want to say in my final moments?"

Some of my favorites include Seattle Slew's last words, Yes, apparently the race horse spoke to his trainer, Mickey Taylor... saying "You get on with your life. I've got to go." I believe it. My dogs and cat speak to me... so who am I to wonder about Seattle Slew's words?

A perfect little book to read cover to cover and then keep handy to pick up again. I thought it would be one to sit and read a page at a time slowly, for entertainment. It is so intriguing though that I found myself wanting to read the next and the next page until I was to the end. It's not a long philosophical book, rather a fun little book of quotes that induces thought/interest/smiles/curiosity. It was so interesting to contemplate the words famous and not so famous people used in their last moments, the irony, the uniqueness, the unlikely. A wonderful addition to any library and a sure to please gift.

I'm using this for a class right now. It was the least expensive option I found. I have downloaded the kindle reader on my iPad mini and use that in place of a bulky book when I attend. I can pull it up on any PC (after downloading the Kindle reader) and it remembers my highlights and bookmarks. I can always pick up where I left off on any device. I love this option and it should be a serious consideration for all students.

Great, informative, book, awesome examples too!

This book has a lot.of sample . templates that are really good to reference. They tend to be federal examples though, buy that's probably because federal is the same everywhere. Lots of amazing information presented in simple wording so it doesn't get too confusing like a lot of other law books. And despite the title, it's actually a pretty jnteresting, engaging book!
