Solid thermo book w/ some application

This book is well written and explains thermo science in detail. Not only does this book teach the theory; it teaches how to apply the theory in the design of real chemical systems. This book is tough sleding...although not as tough as Sandler's book on thermo, which is also, in my opinion, and better book. I
My only real dislike of this book is the formating...I read this book for long hours at a time in my thermo class (it was one of three books required for the course) and I must say the text and page layout of the book really bothered me.

While I have enjoyed it at times

As a young female in my twenties, dating has been quite the experience. While I have enjoyed it at times, I have always felt like I was going into each experience somewhat blind, not knowing if the moves I was making were going to land me the man I wanted or just another broken heart. As each experience came to an end, I'd find myself wondering, “What the hell just happened? What went wrong, and where did it wrong?” Naturally, these questions lead me to read about the things I was experiencing in order to get the answers I needed. Not surprisingly, what I was going through had been experienced by many people, both men and women, in dating. The internet is full of information about the do's and don'ts of dating, but rarely is all the information you need to be successful in love all in one place. Often times I would find myself reading things where the author claimed that her solutions were the keys to success, but once you started reading there was little practical implementation and a lot of vague ideas about male and female energy, just as one example. In Love Factually, not only will you find a step by step road map to get you to success, but you will also find the scientific backing and research to go along with each step. There is nothing vague in this book. Dr. Duana C. Welch uses a charming and witty writing style which makes this book in particular hard to put down. It's not all facts and figures though; as Dr. Welch includes both examples from her own personal life and from those she has helped through the process, which gives her book a personal touch and makes it relatable to whoever is reading it. I'm happy to have found this book and have already spoken with many of my friends about it. When you find something this good, you cannot keep it to yourself.

Outstanding, pleasurable, impactful book!

Even though I was warned not to read this book in the introduction (I am happily married), I eagerly tore into and read Love Factually as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed. I have followed Duana Welch's blog for several years when as a young single father, I was struggling with many questions about the poor choices I was making. Fortunately, a grad school friend sent me a column of hers, and I have read it regularly since.

Love Factually exemplifies the best aspects of Duana’s writing. It is personal, funny, and direct. I see my journey in the stories inspired by countless people who have written and dialogued with Duana over the years. I was amused and delighted, but I was also informed. Duana’s work represents a summary of the best psychological research available.

Because of our many conversations over the years, and from reading her columns from the beginning, I am a more intentional communicator. I have a better understanding of my own needs and desires from my marriage and those of my wife. In short, I am a better husband than otherwise I would have been.

If you want another book that treats dating and sex like a game to try and manipulate potential partners, keep going. This book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you understand that finding and choosing a mate determines our happiness and well-bring more than almost any other process of our lives, then buy this book, settle down, and get ready for an enjoyable, impactful read.

I'm a guy - divorced for 10 years now. In the course of trying to figure out what went wrong and how I could relate better to a woman, I read a lot of advice sources. Everything from Doc Love to How to Prevent Your Divorce. I'm not sure any of this stuff helped (especially that last one).

But about 5 years ago I stumbled across the LoveScience blog by Dr. Duana Welch. Her writing was different from the other love advice columns and books I'd seen. For one, it was humorous without being crass. It wasn't The Rules, and it wasn't combat dating for guys. Dr. D was writing about actual scientific studies and I found them to be eerily accurate . . . they were making sense about the way that women and men behaved when interacting with each other.

I found out that my attachment style would make it harder for me - check. The book pointed out that differences may seem attractive initially, but that similar people actually made better friends and eventually lovers. I paid special attention to the explanations about what makes a woman interested in a man and what keeps her interested. And I agreed with her conclusions about what a man wants from a woman - check again. The link between our development as humans and how we view men and women today . . . fascinating to me.

The chapter on "you need to break up with someone who doesn't fit your true love profile" was a bit sobering. Because I would tend to want to remain in a relationship even when my gut (or my heart, that's it) was saying "this isn't feeling right." I have to admit, I think she's right and I think more people should hold out for their best match. There would be a lot more happy partnerships if they would.

I posted a lot of my observations at the LoveScience blog, and Dr. Welch received them with courtesy, humor and thoughtfulness. I think she likes picking the brains of all of us as we "experiment" with love every day. Anyway, it's a pretty cool book. I'd say it clears up a whole lot of things about how women and men love. Might as well use these insights to one's own advantage.

Brilliant. A great book for the serious player

The gold in this book is learning when to play offensively and defensively, and most important, how to read what's in your opponent's hand, not just by what he throws but by what he doesn't. If your goal in playing is simply to relax and chat, this book probably isn't for you. But if it's to become a great player and you're willing to concentrate during games, unless you're already a true expert, this book will up your game.

Captivating

I first read an excerpt of this book in one of the Sunday papers about a month ago. I had a vague recollection of Vanessa and her story as I was a teenager at the time her arrest made the news. After reading the excerpt, I was immediately interested in this story as I am with all stories about drug mules.
Before buying the book I watched Vanessa being interviewed in one of the local talk shows. I was not particularly impressed by the interview because I found that Vanessa did not articulate her story well and she also seemed blasé (I suppose that could happen if you retell a story over and over). From the interview I also found out that the book is not actually written by Vanessa herself but by someone else. Immediately I had doubts on whether the story would be well and sincerely captured.
Thankfully my initial curiosity got the better of me and I bought the book. I bought this on my Kindle whilst at the airport waiting to board a flight. This made the first two chapters of the book relatable.
I am not half way through the book yet but I'm glad to say the book has a sincere and authentic tone. It is truly an intriguing story and it is captured well. I had so many questions about Felix and his involvement in this. I got very emotional during the moments she seeks for Felix to rescue her.
I cannot wait to finish reading.
It is worth buying and it is definitely worth reading.

Fantastic Book and a life lesson to all

This is the sad and enlightening story of Vanessa Goosen. In 1993 she was a young 21 year old South African beauty queen and business woman. She had loving boyfriend whom she adored, and they were expecting a baby. Felix (the boyfriend) and her co owned a clothing boutique, and the business flourished. Little did she know was that a business trip to Bangkok, Thailand was going to change her life forever.

Felix had sent her to Bangkok to take advantage of the latest merchandise being offered there. Whilst there she met a friend of Felix, Jackson, who introduced himself to her at her hotel. He gave her some engineering notebooks requesting them to be delivered to his brother back in South Africa. After inspecting the pages, she obliged. Tired and exhausted from the trip and morning sickness, she was extremely anxious to return home especially to return into the Felix's arms. At the airport security check point, her world came crashing down when a security guard uncovered 1.7 kg of heroin in the spine of the notebooks given to her. Despite her protests of innocence she is jailed, the Thai officials couldn't do anything to track down Jackson as they believe that he used a fake name so that he won't be traced. With this information she realises that she was used as a drug mule, and for being caught was going to suffer the consequences. Drug trafficking in Thailand carries a mandatory death sentence, this charge was commuted to life in prison because of Goosen's pregnancy.

The book's main achievement in my opinion was its ability to evoke a sense of empathy from the reader to Goosen's situation, she was duped into carry illegal drugs and then she had to suffer the consequences for that. Thai prison is not a holiday camp. The ambience of isolation, controlled environment, adjusting to a foreign culture and other struggles is enough to drive one to suicide. To make things worse for her during the first few weeks in prison, initially evasive, Felix abandons her for another woman. Goosen explained that if it was not for her daughter Felicia, she wouldn't have had the will to go on living, fighting for her freedom and redeeming her name. When Felicia was old enough she made the choice to get her childhood best friend, Melanie to adopt her. It was either that, or the orphanage. Thanks to the efforts of strong willed lawyer, family, friends and well wishers who have heard about her situation, also kept her strong throughout the ordeal. Eventually after a 16 year struggle she was freed, and finally returns home. Adjusting to life back home was no easy feat either, adjusting to the new political system (she missed the first democratic elections held in 1994), technology and most importantly rebuilding her relationship with her teenage daughter.

This book provides a big life lesson to us all, especially for those who travel and for those who are considering becoming drug mules. You can't always depend your country's government to intervene. I was almost in a similar incident in Hong Kong when a woman I never met tried to get me to help her with a parcel. Glad I refused.

Loved it

I think that this was an honest and horrifying account of a Thailand prison experience. In the days where drug trafficking is becoming more and more common, I think books like these are a must. I do believe the author is innocent....I did NOT believe Shelby Corby was... Innocent or not these stories must be told to keep other young people from making the same mistakes.
