the best introduction to Donaldson's gauge theory, even if it is outdated

Gauge theory as a field for study by mathematicians, and in particular, topologists, was initiated by Donaldson's proof, which is the content of this book, that the only simply connected smooth closed 4-manifolds with definite intersection form are connected sums of complex projective planes (with the factors having either orientation). This was the first major advance in 4-manifold smooth topology beyond Rohlin's theorem on the signature of a smooth spin 4-manifold and the Kirby-Siebenmann obstruction. Donaldson's theorem was followed by many other related results, in particular, the discovery of the Donaldson polynomial invariants and various gluing and vanishing theorems, none of which appear in this early book, so this work is not suitable as a comprehensive reference for the theory. But it is still essential for a student wishing to learn gauge theory because of the extensive coverage of the requisite analysis, topology, and geometry that one needs to work in this field (or even read any later works). The authors endeavor to explain intuitively the motivation behind the different steps in this long proof (it takes more than 100 pages to prove the theorem), with some effective figures included as well.

Donaldson's proof is based on studying the moduli space of certain (anti-self-dual) solutions (mod gauge equivalences) of the Yang-Mills equations, the most fundamental equation in particle physics, which includes the vacuum Maxwell equations of electromagnetics, as well as those of QED and QCD, as special cases. For the SU(2) case over a smooth simply connected compact 4-manifold, the moduli space can be shown to be nonempty, orientable, smooth except for a finite number of points, near which the moduli space is a cone on a projective space, and having one noncompact end that is diffeomorphic to a collar on the original 4-manifold. This establishes a cobordism between the original manifold and a disjoint union of copies of CP^2, which proves the theorem. The various chapters of the book prove each of the aforementioned properties of the moduli spaces, mainly through tedious technical analytic results. Along the way the necessary material concerning bundles, connections, Sobolev spaces, Fredholm operators, index theory, classifying spaces, Bochner-Weitzenboeck formulas, etc., is presented, making this the most accessible gauge-theoretic work for (2nd-year) graduate students.

The second author, Karen Uhlenbeck, was one of the pioneers in the field, deriving several critical analytic results about sequences of solutions to the YM equations that are ubiquitous in gauge theory proofs; the book includes her proof of the famed removable singularities theorem as an appendix. There's also an early section on the construction of fake R^4s, one of the strangest results of 4-manifold topology (although I think Lawson's Theory of Gauge Fields in Four Dimensions does a better job of explaining this, and orientability as well). It is preferable to read the second edition, which includes a brief introduction that sumarizes advances in the field between 1984 and 1991, in addition to having been re-typeset.

A demerit of the book is that it is filled with mathematical typos and many of the technical proofs require some modification in the choice of constants owing to some errors in the inequalities. However, the theorems themselves remain true, as the reader can verify with some effort.

This book will provide the reader the tools to proceed to Donaldson and Kronheimer's The Geometry of Four-Manifolds and Morgan's Gauge Theory and the Topology of Four-Manifolds and The Seiberg-Witten Equations and Applications to the Topology of Smooth Four-Manifolds.

It Must Have Been Cathartic

While there are quite a few misdirects in this book, I did enjoy the frenetic pace and desperate tone. That along with its short length has it come across as an impassioned speech for change. These short excerpts give you a sense of what I mean:

- "Hype and B.S. are nothing new in the world of advertising, but things are getting out of hand."

- we need "to end the delusional thinking and start doing creative work that actually sells products"

- "That's when I learned that stuff that doesn't work...that's code-named 'branding'."

- "When and why did the absurd idea that you can create a brand just with ads - worse, with vague ad empty 'branding campaigns' - come to pass"

- "Mediocre agencies found it simpler to babble about values, positioning, branding, etc. than to do the hard creative work necessary to say something interesting enough about a product to help move it off the shelves."

On one level Moruzzi is correct. Advertising has become entertainment not sales. Branding has become about mission-led organizations not sales. It allows the purveyors of those services not to be held accountable for...sales. Incredibly, that is why they exist but they shy away from the task. Moruzzi rants some more, "no empty and vague feel-good happy-shiny-people-holding-hand 'branding campaign' has ever created a brand."

Having worked in start ups, Moruzzi admits that the catalyst for this book is the ubiquitous but highly ineffective digital advertising. He likens this type of advertising to solutions in search of a problem. It is of the most intrusive and least relevant sort and the majority of the book is a rant against it alone. That is fine and well-deserved but what makes the book a little less credible is praise for traditional advertising from the famous Creative Revolution.

He highlights the same campaigns that any marketing and advertising book does from the Mad Men era. The problem in doing so is he is missing the point that there were only a handful of good ads that each iconic agency from that time continue to hold up as effective. Arguably, this time in advertising became a game of more not better. Teressa Iezzi, staff editor at Fast Company magazine and previously editor of Creativity, wrote in her book, The Idea Writers: Copywriting in a New Media and Marketing Era, “For every “Think Small” in the 1960’s there was a bottomless bowl of the same insufferable dross that’s served up on any given commercial break and that covers the ground from forgettable waste of everyone’s time and money to actively annoying disincentive to ever buy the product being advertised.”

Moruzzi holds up Howard Luck Gossage (1917–1969) or "The Socrates of San Francisco" as a beacon for today's marketers. Gossage focused on storytelling and knew he was in the business of selling. So that makes sense but he fails to link the perceived successes of Gossage to what digital marketers what must do today. I am more a fan of the now defunct N.W. Ayer agency. Their work is the true beacon from advertising's debated history.

He hits a few good points when he takes on social media. This starts with the observation that "most companies do not like their customers." He makes the point that companies are mistakenly sending customers to social media platforms away from their own site that they control. Moruzzi says, "Most companies are scared to death about getting out of their steel and glass castles and having to open up to the outside world. Look at their uninspired advertising. Look at their lame websites. But all of a sudden they want to be hip on social media? Who do they think they are kidding?"

On content he suggests that brands shouldn't post anything unless they are willing to pay to distribute. This he believes would improve the quality and cut down on the overall amount of communications. Lastly, the author makes a point that I have subscribed to. Marketers are always attracted to the next shiny new toy thinking it to be a magic panacea. So the industry has trained itself to chase fads while training consumers to disengage.

While I believe the book is not accurately titled, it comes clear what he is out accomplish. Moruzzi wants marketing to be a considered craft again. A craft whose purpose is to sell. I hope he writes another but that the topic be on the 9 startups he has worked on in the last 16 years. That experience has prompted him to be frustrated and jaded. A deeper exploration into that might prove more valuable.

Popping the Social Media Balloon!

As one of the original “Mad Men,” I have seen many changes in the advertising world over the last forty odd years. None has been as dramatic as the rise of digital and its offshoot, social media. In common with all the other “latest and greatest,” sweeping claims are being made as to the importance of making “social” an integral part of your marketing program. Assertions about its effectiveness are supported by soft metrics such as clicks, affinity, awareness, friending and so on. Now Massimo Moruzzi, who has lived through the trenches of the dot com implosion and now the ever accelerating growth of social media, is extremely well qualified to stick a giant pin in the ever expanding social media hot-air balloon. And by heck, he certainly does that. He delivers cogent, rational and incredibly researched evidence that social media is, in fact… Little more than another iteration of the smoke and mirrors the ad biz has subjected the unwashed masses to since the days of obscene graffiti advertising brothels on the walls of ancient Rome

It teaches the reader how to feel and know that God is in us and in everything. In fact, it shows you that God is everywhere and always available and accessible to all who ask. It is a spiritual, non-religious, non-denominational book about how to deepen our connection with Divine Spirit while at the same time being able to access this Divine Power at any time we need help or guidance.
This book, when following what is being taught, will allow you to experience God/Spirit whenever you want—at will. You can contact God/Spirit or your higher self, asking a question, or asking for guidance, or even request a spiritual experience with the Divine Being, and then be given the answer or spiritual experience instantaneously.

Thus, the textual requirements are paramount including traceability (batch numbers, date-coding etc) in case of recall; while striking appearance to attract customer attention is in lower key. And with the increase in malicious tampering nowadays recall is more frequent.

Working at R+D Dpt one tends to forget about the whole for a newer product. This book is fine to find design answers, but a primer must also be handy. I recommend 2 books for learning packaging purposes.

A comprehensive and understandable work on hydraulics...

As a lecturer and graduate student in water resource engineering, I have read numberous textbooks covering the topic of fluid mechanics. I have reviewed textbooks written by aeronautical and mechanical engineers, and find that the civil engineers, particularly Dr.'s Finnemore and Franzini, have done an exemplary job in writing a book that is clear and logical, yet spares no detail, in presenting the fundamentals of fluids to undergraduates and graduates alike. The book begins with definitions, viscocity, and hydrostatics, then moves along to open-channel hydraulics and waterhammer.
The authors discuss the details in terms of concepts, testing, and mathematical computations while using a minimum of complicated vector integrals. They continue to present "the big picture" of hydraulics even while explaining fluid theory - a student and lecturer could not ask for more. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I laud this textbook and recommend it to any practicing civil or agricultural engineer, or to any student of engineering.

Best hydraulic reference I have found & I use it regularly

I own the 8th edition and have used it regulary since graduation 12 years ago as a practicing civil engineer designing water treatment plants. I have looked at many other fluid mechanics books over the years and have not found any equal to this one. I need to get the 10th edition and see how it has changed with Daugherty no longer around. There are other books that are more in-depth with theoretical analysis, but this one has the best balance betweeen theory and practical application for typical civil engineering projects.

Okay but not exceptional

Most of the material covered is fairly basic with an emphasis on fluid statics of course (constant velocity flow). I was disappointed to see apparent absence of higher level mathematics. I understand that many of the real problems in fluid dynamics/CFD are approximations of the underlying equations (Navier-Stokes, etc.). However I would like to have seen some of the simpler models of turbulent flow at the very least. The homework problems are very easy.
