John Burns is Professor of Management and Accounting at the University of Exeter Business School, UK. He teaches Management Accounting extensively, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Patrick L. Brezonik is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota. His research interests are focused on natural aquatic systems, including nutrient cycling and chemistry, metal complexation by natural organic matter, and applications of remote sensing to aquatic systems.

William A. Arnold is the Joseph T. and Rose S. Ling Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota. His research interests are in the areas of transformation, transport, and remediation of anthropogenic chemicals in the environment, including surface-mediated oxidation/reduction reaction, photochemistry, and partitioning.

GREAT REFERENCE AND TEXT

I have taken a number of water chemistry classes during my undergraduate and graduate education. This water chemistry book is best I have used. I have used the Benjamin and the Snoeyink for courses also. This new text is very well written and had numerous worked examples and is written with a stronger background in chemistry. It is written more in the style and background of a chemist and not an engineer. This really allows for a clear explanation and understanding of the material. I constantly find myself coming back to this particular text when I need to do any kind of chemical numerical modeling. It is a great reference to have. It also covers a much broader amount of topics compared to the other industry standard texts. This book is great for someone who needs an all in one general chemistry reference. I would also recommend pairing with the Benjamin if you don't mind purchasing two books as that is a more concise text with other great examples on the most basic concepts of the field.

Better Than Others

Let me start first by stating that (1) I do not know the author, nor had I ever heard of him prior to reading his book, and (2) He sent a request for me to read, and then write, an honest review of his work. This review is stated in two parts: Negative & Positive.
Let's just get the negative out of the way first. I really could not find much wrong with this book other than there are numerous typos, punctuation errors, and grammatical errors. This should have been thoroughly edited prior to publication. As for the grammar, I truly believe these are due to a language barrier, and not ignorance on the part of the author. However, this is not a huge problem in reading and understanding the concept delivered, nor is it a terrible distraction (only for me, but I am picky). The other problem I encountered involved the way chapters were arranged, or should I say, not really delineated. What I mean by this statement is that, when progressing to each chapter, it was very difficult to know when I actually finished a chapter. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars, instead of 5, were due to the errors, not the content itself. Now, on to the positive aspects.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way this author provided personal stories, as well as quotes from others. These stories/quotes did wonders to connect the reader with the concepts. I have no idea why another reviewer on Amazon had a major problem with the language of the first chapter, which also was a quote. I saw the f-word used only once, and again, that was a quote. There was no other inappropriate language in this book. Mr. Tenodi uses his life experiences to bring others to re-organize their own thinking processes to move forward in their lives. There is no coercion, no dogmatic beliefs to force on others - just very reasonable, useful information, and he puts forth his ideas very differently from most other so-called self-help books. And let me say here that I totally loath the self-help industry. I work as a mental health therapist and this information is spot-on with helping people get out of their self-imposed "ruts" without "preaching" or putting forth some crack-pot ideas. I applaud Mr. Tenodi for the willingness to disclose his own failures and encourage others to climb higher. I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for something which is not your normal run-of-the-mill self-help book. If you read this and apply the methods step-by-step, I believe you will enhance your life. Mr. Tenodi, if you do lecture tours, please come to the Deep South. I would love to see you in person and bring some of my friends.

I went into reading Sasha Tenodi's BE YOUR BETTER SELF not really knowing what to expect---and I left it feeling so good about life and what was possible that I had to share it with others.

This is not just another book that tells you what you can do. It is a resource that actually guides you through the process with the author as the guide for us to follow. Who would have known that a movie like FIGHT CLUB (which I must admit I have only seen once a couple of years ago on Bravo) could share a tip that would help him as he was experiencing his own crisis and decision-making.

The important thing for us is that Sasha uses this book not just to tell his own story but give you the tips needed so you can begin writing your own next chapter of your life. He invites you to ask yourself very important questions, realizing that the answers will determine for us personally what it is we want and then we'll know how to get there.

Important questions to consider are these:

What does being successful mean for me? What does being happy mean for me? What does having good relationships mean for me? What does looking good mean for me? What does losing weight mean for me?

Sasha then remind us of this important and profound truth: "Words have no meaning until we give them one."

So the question you will ask yourself at the end of reading this book is "What do I really want?" The answer will then be the goal post for us as we move forward.

Powerful and practical, BE YOUR BETTER SELF is proof that in life you always have options. You just have to make sure you are willing to take advantage of them.

A great beginner's book to learn C

This is a great book to learn the language if one is already familiar with the structured programming paradigm. The book is written in clear language, has examples in code, exercises and documented listing of C standard libraries. Among exotics, there is also a (very useful) chapter on UNIX systems programming.

Once you read through this book and begin programming in C for real, you will also find that it is a very, very useful reference. Great book, would recommend to anyone trying to master C.

This book is a good reference to anyone who knows C pretty well or to someone who is returning to it after a few years of using other languages (like me). My only complaint is there aren't any sections about operating system specifics.

About the Author
Christopher Seeley (B.A. Hons. & PhD, London University) has written extensively on the Japanese writing system and Chinese characters; his publications include A History of Writing in Japan (E.J. Brill, 1991, republished University of Hawai'i Press, 2000). He was senior lecturer and Head of Department at the Asian Languages Department, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand until his retirement in 2001.

Kenneth G. Henshall is well known for the many books he has written on Japanese literature, history, and culture, as well as for his popular Japanese language-learning textbooks. A graduate of the universities of London (B.A. Hons), Sydney (Ph.D.), and Adelaide (Dip. Ed.), he is now Associate Professor of Japanese at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He has also taught at the universities of Auckland, Western Australia, California, and Waikato.

Dr. Jiageng Fan specializes in the relationship between the Chinese and Japanese languages and scripts, focusing on the etymology of characters and the change of societal/cultural values which they reflect. He has lived, studied and taught Chinese, Japanese and English in China and Australia and has travelled extensively. After obtaining a B.A. at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, he moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, where he earned his PhD at the University of Canterbury. If you are like me and you do not like Heisig's method of ...

If you are like me and you do not like Heisig's method of memorising kanji (which will help you memorise a great amount of kanjis, yes, but without knowing how to pronounce or compund them), this might just be the book for you. It aims at explaining the development of each kanji, which will help you understand these characters with a historic-semantic approach.
However, this updated version has taken a much more academic direction than Henshall's original book. There are certain pros and cons to this: solid sources are cited and a diverse range of explanations are included, but they take a tone that may not exactly be fun to read(unlike Henshall's original). It is a great source for advanced Japanese students, but is not begginer-friendly.

Quite nice update to the original book

Quite nice update to the original book. Positive changes - first section has the 1006 educational characters in its superior pedagogical order to the previous 996; characters are shown in clear large print which is much easier to discriminate than the previous brush strokes; all 2136 new kanji are included of course; JLPT levels are marked, however they had to arbitrarily decide if a character is L2 or L3, also all characters other than L2-L5 are marked L1, what else could you do although in the older rankings 26 rare kanji were properly left out of the listings, ex #1731 (CHIN) now has an L1 listing whereas previously properly left out; mixed ON-kun kanji examples are printed caps/small for components which is nice (ex #1187) unlike before.
The etymologies have undergone a lot of rewrite with sources cited. Sometimes this is really helpful. As an example #1234 KIN meaning "fungus, bacteria". I slightly prefer O'Neill's "fungus, germ" but not bad. In the etymology, it is clearly shown that the character originally meant mushroom and fungus (Shirakawa and Shuowen). Try reading the etymology and the character springs alive! (note the crowding concept in the character). Often it is more useful than the mnemonic given. In addition the examples are really good here and throughout the book. Here SAIKIN is bactera (detailed germ) and KINRUI (fungus type) means fungi - excellent. The example compounds in the book are really great with short and accurate definitions.
By the way, Kanji Alive (U. of Chicago) online also has really nice mnemonics for all N2-N5 and kyoiku kanji as well as others and are based on DeRoo. Some of those mnemonics are really super.

Great message of real freedom!

Just finished reading Lay It Down, and was compelled to stop and consider my own commitment to the freedom asserted in the Gospel of Jesus and his kingdom. In fact, I paused many times through it to ask myself tough questions about my ever-growing trust in the God of my salvation.

Having experienced the transformation in my friend Bill’s life over the past 15 years, I can attest to the viability and efficacy of his soul work demonstrated in Lay It Down. It is not merely musings from an ivory tower, but a message strained out through the sieve of life’s demands and pressures over a long period of time. It is biblically solid and pragmatically strong. I only wish he had more space to explain some things further.

Bill calls not only on his own experience in Lay It Down. It is also obvious that his research into the writings of others has been broad, and that his own exegetical efforts with difficult passages of Scripture have been pushed to the limit to bring them into alignment with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The three major headings of this book (Unconditional, Transformational, and Relational Good News) are messages desperately needed in the evangelical church in the world today. Our actions and reactions within the history of this remarkable community of faith have pushed us into some muted, unattractive, and even dangerous expressions of Christianity that this book addresses with loving clarity and truth. The Gospel is Good News Again

"Lay it Down" has been one of the most influential books of my Christian life. I've spent most of my effort as a Christian on "trying to be who God wants me to be." This strategy worked...for a while. But eventually I hit a wall...hard. I was driven into anger, despair and depression because I just never felt like I was performing well enough to make God pleased with me. Since my identity was built around all I could do for God, and my best never felt good enough, I considered myself a failure. But is that how God sees me? Is that who I really am?

Bill's uses his own story as a platform to share the "three miracles of the gospel:"
1. The unconditional good news: God views me differently (my Justification) (p.29)
2. The transformational good news: God makes me different (my Sanctification) (p.123)
3. The relational good news: God relates to me differently (my Adoption) (p.167)

To put it simply, this message is all about freedom (Gal 5:1). Not simply freedom from certain things, but freedom for certain things. Because my identity is secure in Christ, because God not only views me differently and makes me different, but he now relates to me as a loving Father, I am free to love others from my new heart (p.151). I am free to stop condemning myself and beating myself up after every time I fail (p.67). I am free to stop allowing my shame to define me (p.173). I am free to trust God's goodness and love (p.41). I could go on!

The real paradigm-shifter for me was this: my effort no longer goes into attaining my identity through my performance...my effort goes into living out of my new nature in Christ (p.139).

For the first time in a while, the gospel is good news again.

A cherished new addition to my GRACE and FREEDOM library!!

The title of Bill Tell’s book may be Lay It Down - but I found it difficult to do so! As someone who has spent a lifetime in vocational ministry, my heart went out to Bill during the opening chapters describing his spiritual breakdown. He takes the reader on a journey through his life and spiritual formation, giving you insight into how his wrong understanding of God’s grace developed and how it ultimately led to his crisis of faith.
I could also relate to the process Bill went through in the rethinking of long-held beliefs about how God views us, how we view ourselves, and what motivates us in our relationship with God. Like Bill, I’ve been impacted by the ministry of the guys from TrueFaced and the powerful allegory they provide in The Cure. Lay It Down presents many of the same truths, but using different language, format and style.
One of the things I loved in Lay It Down, was the way Bill presented all the differences between his old thinking and his transformed view of his relationship with God. I found myself frequently highlighting and double underlining! This book releases believers to walk in the FREEDOM of God’s grace and love for us. Bill addresses not only areas that we’ve been freed FROM but what we’ve been freed TO!
In every chapter, my favorite section was “Yeah, but. . .” where Bill addresses passages of scripture that would seem to contradict grace and freedom. It’s like he could hear the argument building in the mind of the reader! Bill’s writing style is very easy to read and flows well. I love the summaries, diagrams and depths to which he took us in his research.
This is the kind of book that you buy extra copies of to give out to fellow believers who are stuck in a performance driven cycle where nothing is ever enough. It is now a cherished part of my GRACE and FREEDOM library.
