Great book, the gold standard intro

This book is a very finely crafted comprehensive introduction to pharmacokinetics, with enough pharmacodynamics to give one context. If you are new to PK/PD and need to understand and work with the subject matter this is an EXCELLENT starting point and a fine reference. The prose is clear, the organization thoughtful, and the figures and diagrams are masterful - best in class. The authors are both renowned academics with extensive industrial experience. That background shines through in the thoughtful way that topics are motivated and explained. I found the questions useful and thought-provoking. Isn't it the case that the more iron one pumps in the gym, the stronger one is on the playing field?
One thing that I would add to this book (and most other PK books I've seen) would be a comprehensive listing of the different math models (one or two compartment, IV, or zero or first order input, etc), highlighting different uses (closed form solutions are easiest to use for parameter estimations, ODE formulations for repeat dosing, etc.) and their different parameterizations. This book contains some of this information (e.g. Table 19-1), but an appendix with this info would be useful. An additional improvement with great teaching utility might be an elementary modeling/estimation program for MS-Excel.
For those needing an overview of PK (e.g. a pharma executive responsible for a development program) without a lot of the details necessary for practitioners, a less-comprehensive book that is also very good is Peter Welling's "Pharmacokinetics". Gabriellson's and Weiner's book "PK and PD Data Analysis" has a more spotty overview of the basic subject matter, but does have descriptions of many techniques not found elsewhere. The latter book is "WinNonLin-centric" (WinNonLin is a program written by one of the authors) which may be what is wanted.
My favorite intro book and basic referencer for PK is definitely Rowland and Tozer. Bravo!

Best reference on PK

This excellent book (1980 edition) was my introduction to this topic. I have it in my bookshelf and I keep referring back to it. Without planning it, I've become the resident PK expert in my department thanks to this reference! Thank you Drs. Rowland and Tozer.

The Bible of Pharmcokinetics

"Clinical Pharmacokinetics: Concepts and Applications" (or better known as Rowland and Tozer) is a book filled with deep concepts and good explanations. It is the Bible of Pharmacokinetics. If there is a PK concept you want to look up, this book will be the first place you look for it. Before giving the review, let me introduce my background. I have a formal education in physical chemistry and analytical chemistry and am currently working in the field of pharma. I have currently read through half of this book. Although I have not completely finishing the book, I believe there is enough information to share.

The previous PK book I read was Concepts In Clinical Pharmacokinetics by Joseph T. Dipiro and it is a shorter and simpler book than Rowland and Tozer. While "Concepts In Clinical Pharmacokinetics" was a delight to read, it is on the simpler side and a lot of concepts are left unexplained. When I was reading it, there were often moment of "How did he get from this to that?" or "Where this comes from?", and I had to stop reading and tried to derive the equations. In contrast, Rowland and Tozer explain the principles of PK in great details and often from multiple angles, so that the readers can fully appreciate how the concepts are linked together, how PK theories apply and how PK impacts pharmacology research and the drug discovery. The exercises are challenging, but not impossible. Well, a few of them are nearly impossible, but most of them can be worked out (even for someone of my background).

I would love to give it a 4.5 stars, but that is not an option. I do see there are a few shortcomings in this book. Although it is very detailed, it can be too detailed for beginners, except for students who has more time. It is best to start off with a short and easy to read introductory book. Yes, Rowland and Tozer have explained many concepts in multiple ways and this is generally good, except when you are busy. Sometime, I just feel like: I get your point already. The Final and the real criticism is that the book can be a bit dry. Unlike "Concepts In Clinical Pharmacokinetics", this is not a book to be breezed through.

Easy to Understand, A bit more difficult to master.

This book has 14 chapters of examples and insight into public speeching. The author, who taught public speaking at seminars for 40 years, has learned alot and communicates his ideals well in written form. I really envy those who had a chance to listen to his public speeches. That is the weakest part of this book, which the author admits. It doesn't matter how much you read about speaking, you have to go out and do it, or you can't get better.
With that noted, this book does a great job at describing the speaking process. It starts by reviewing "the basics" and then divides his book into the special potential needs of its readers. At its core, this book tries to address the fears of its readers. It appear that public speaking strikes fear into more people, then anything else. If you are scared, you can't think well or express yourself clearly. Thus, if you can conquer your fear, you are on your way to giving a great speech.
"Quick" discusses three things to do. First, be prepared. You can't talk intelligently about any topic, if you don't understand it. Second, try to speak to your interests. The more you care about something, the more interesting will be your speech. Third, remember your audience. Even if you love __________ (fill in the blank), you need to understand that your audience may not. Since, no speech is effective if you lose your audience, you have to remember their needs.
The other thing "Quick" does is give you good tips. Don't try to use them all at once. My advise, pick the one, or two you like the best and work on them. Once you perfect them, or decide you don't like them, try something else. For example, I like "Quick's" suggestions of using names when you tell a story. "Imagine a hero with no name" who would remember him? Well, if you want to use an example with people, give them names, it makes it easier for your audience to relate to them.
This is this book's strongest foundation, the colorful examples and the author ability to relate to his readers through them. He quotes famous people like Lincoln and Julius Ceaser repeatedly. He also cites more ordinary people to show how real people have good insights into life.
Overall, the examples and the organization are interesting and add to its strength. "Quick" is a good book, a good "primer" for new speakers. I don't think more experienced speakers will enjoy it as much, but there is enough here to please most people who want to improve their speaking skill, novice or expert.

He gets to the root of the matter.

I've been a member of Toastmasters Clubs and been trained in all the "fundamentals of speaking" but I'll tell you something: Carnegie's three fundamental principles are all you need. He's the only speaking teacher I've ever read who points out that all the superficial effects, like your voice quality and your gestures and whether you say UM or not, these aren't important. What really matters is that you're speaking about something you really believe and really want to say to this group, and something that you REALLY know, either from experience or intense study.
If you only speak on those topics, all the superficial stuff works out. You communicate. And you'll feel comfortable doing it. Carnegie's three fundamentals are the most important you'll ever encounter on speaking.
I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I'm an expert on the subject, and I'm telling you if you want to help yourself to better speaking skills, study and practice the principles in this book and forget the superficials.

If You Going to Read Only One Book on Speaking�This is it.

The book has been reworked so may times and improved by the experiences of the Dale Carnegie Organization. That is what makes this book so good. This last revision by Dorothy Carnegie based on Mr. Carnegie's notes and plans is benefited by a strong editorial approach. The most important persistent advise is to talk about things you care about and are extremely knowledgeable about. Be excited about the subject or pick a new topic. Find every opportunity to speak and prepare for each one as a major opportunity. It tells how to limit your subject so that you have time to fill in the details that make it a winning talk. It guides you on how to personalize the speech and use words that have impact. The easy introduction to the methods of studying and understanding your audience are very important. It makes a good start on the field of audience participation. This book provides excellent advise on rehearsal.
This book along with every other speaking book drives home the point that there is no such thing as a good impromptu talk unless you were very lucky. In reality you work on subjects and material with a plan to use it at some future time. When you are speaking there are many things to watch. If you speak impromptu on a new subject some thing is going to suffer.
Introducing a speaker or presenting an award seems to stimulate reckless behavior much like the cutting desire to hurt people of newscasters. This book explains why this behavior is so short sighted.
Having read a Dale Carnegie book decades ago, I put off reading this book for fear it would be full of positive thinking dribble. This book is completely straight forward in style. It is in textbook format, but it is extremely easy too read. The examples of actual students and successful speakers get a little shallow sometimes. The outstanding thumbnail review of each part of the book is very helpful. I have read 21 books on public speaking. Right now this book is my leading candidate for someone that is only interested in reading one book on public speaking. It just happens to be a very low price.

The author, who appears to be exorcising personal demons, does a fine job of elucidating the psychological and emotional price of being loved and cared for by a sociopath. It is this tension, between the loving mother and the criminal willing to neglect and at times even betray her child, that pushes the story forward. Unfortunately, the litany of crimes is so vast and comes so fast that the narrative never quite lingers long enough to develop real drama or suspense. Well researched and touching, though, it testifies to how one son can evolve into a killer and the other live to tell the tale. As a chronicle of Sante Kimes's life, it's unlikely to be surpassed by any other. The only person likely to tell a more intimate tale is Sante herself. Photos not seen by PW. The authors tell a compellingly sordid and ultimately very sad story that began, at least for the newspaper-reading and TV news-watching public, when a middle-aged woman named Sante Kimes and her twentysomething son, Kenny, were arrested for murdering a wealthy woman in New York City as part of an involved plot to abscond with her money and possessions. But there is much more to the story than that, and Walker, Sante's older son and Kenny's half-brother, tells it all in astounding detail. Sante Kimes was a finagler, con artist, manipulator, and thief from practically the first day she drew breath; soon enough, murderer would be added to her list of labels. Perhaps the most amazing aspect of her career in crime was the way she was able to enlist her two sons in her brazen illegal activities. Author Kent wised up to his mother, although it took him a long time to summon the strength to pull away from this Lady Svengali. But unfortunate Kenny, now incarcerated, as is Sante, seems yet to understand that he was psychologically poisoned by his mother. A movie attempting to tell Sante Kimes' story would be criticized for being overblown and implausible. And yet, this story is neither; instead, it is one of the most engrossing true-crime accounts to be published in recent memory. Expect this compelling book to get all the attention it deserves. One Crazy Mama

Entertaining, shocking (in terms of her child abuse, mostly) and bizarre. Walker's life is almost like a controlled psych experiment of the effects of criminal behavior on a child. Luckily, he turned out ok but his brother didn't. The reader, like Walker, can't really understand or know how and why Kimes was so compulsively, insanely criminal. We can guess that her impoverished unstable upbringing, which is mysterious given her compulsive lying, had much to do with it. Walker also credits a neighbor for intervening and giving him some stabilizing influence in his life when he needed it; the men in her life were too much under her sway to be good parents for Walker. Interesting that this neighbor's husband was a retired cop; this would be the perfect couple since she could be the mother figure and a cop could spot Kimes' pathology and not be taken in by her.

I won't give it away, but the new edition comes with an epilogue that is every bit as surprising as the rest of the book. Needless to say, Kimes was a mystery and a shyster from a family of mysterious shysters, apparently.

My favorite scene involves Kimes attempting to beat a summons by having a friend dress up as her, as he put it, "identical twin snowbunnies" or some such weirdness, and show up claiming that the 'wrong' Sante had been served! Walker states this was the kind of insanity and boldness that Kimes not only would pull, but could suck other people into participating in.

Written in a down-to-earth style that moves along briskly. Fun, if unnerving and weird. I'm amazed that Walker emerged as a decent person; what a testament to how intervening in the lives of youth at risk can pay off. Hats off to him for surviving this insanity.

Interesting read

On the plus side, the book certainly revealed the mindset of Sante Kimes and the sad consequences of her sociopathy on her sons. It is a sad tale full of unnecessary pain and loss, one that seems to repeat itself over generations. I can certainly understand the author's personal concern about the impact of it on his children.
Conversely, while I did keep coming back to the book, it didn't capture my attention as others have done or cause me to read through the night to morning. Much of that is due to the style of the writing.
It is a relatively chronological memoir and is written in a very conversational style. Perhaps that was my issue. A number of incidents were written about throughout that were used as examples of Santes thinking and behavior that did not fit in the timeframe being discussed. These were later written about in greater detail when the timeline was appropriate but left the impression that more stuff had happened than was actually presented in the book when, in reality, some things were simply repeated.
Which is not to say that was all she did only that it started as something of an evaluation of her mindset with examples and then turned into a full on memoir.
The other thing that was both off-putting and admirable was the repetition of Kent's angst and internal right/wrong discussions and the repeated explanations on why he stayed with his family and why he kept going back. Clearly, Kent wanted to both take responsibility for what he did and didn't do but also wanted to explain it with the usual "I did it because they're my family and I love them". I don't know that I would have taken the same return to mama path he took so many times but I can't possibly put myself in his shoes anyway. What got old, was the ongoing angst he continued to relate.
Still, I would think the act of writing and publishing this book must have been a catharsis for Kent given everything he's expressed in this book.
I simply would have structured it differently and been more succinct.
That would, likely, change the way the story is perceived so, I must say, he got published, I didn't.

An insider's perspective on Sante and Kenny Kimes

I applaud Kenneth Walker not only for writing this riveting account of growing up with a sociopath for a mother, but also for being able to think for himself enough not to get sucked in to her lies and crimes. At times, especially when he was younger and more naive, he did actually get manipulated into some of her schemes, but as he grew up and began to see his mother for the predator she was, he determined he didn't want any part of it. But it was not so easy for him to pull away from her. She was, after all, his mother. And she had a side to her that was fun and exciting. She could also be loving (at least in her own twisted way) and fiercely protective of him. But the down side was that she was extremely controlling, endlessly manipulating, and made his growing-up years a chaotic and turbulent hell.

I've read a number of articles about Sante and Kenny, but this book offers a much deeper look into the twisted mess that was Sante. She wasn't a typical "successful" sociopath, as are many people in business, politics and other fields. Those people usually are users and manipulators, and can be extremely ruthless in achieving what they want, uncaring about those they exploit or ruin along the way. But they do it as a means to an end. There is logic in their sociopathy. Sante possessed all of those antisocial characteristics, but there was something self-sabotaging inside her too. She just could not leave well enough alone. She'd spent years looking for her "millionaire", and finally found him in Kenneth Kimes Sr. Had she been satisfied with that, she could have kicked back and led a very comfortable life with all the perks that come with being a wealthy man's wife. But no. She was seemingly addicted to her schemes. No matter how much she had, it was never enough for her. She wanted more, more, MORE, and concocted some bizarre and convoluted schemes to achieve what she wanted.

The woman ruined many, many lives along the way. Especially those of her sons and her husbands. Her "friends" were only people she saw as useful to her in some way and when they were no longer useful to her, they were no longer needed in her life. In reading about all of her crimes and exploits, it's astounding that she got away with as much as she did for as long as she did. She did get arrested a few times, and even served prison time for using "maids" as slaves. She was incapable of having an ordinary employer-employee relationship with low-paid servants. She had to be 100% controlling of them, working them 7 days a week for only room and board, with no actual pay whatsoever. She chose naive, undocumented immigrants who barely spoke English, promising them wonderful jobs working for her, and then cruelly exploited them, stealing their identification, threatening them and imprisoning them.

It took Kenneth a long time to really be able to stand up to his mother and say "no" to her. And even more time to finally just cut her out of his life altogether. He really hated her for what she did to his younger brother, Kenny. And he felt some guilt in that, too, thinking he should've done more to help Kenny get out of her clutches. Instead, Kenny eventually became totally brainwashed by her, completely bought into all her paranoia and lies, and was quick to do her evil bidding, which ultimately ended him in prison for life.

This book is a fascinating study of an extremely dysfunctional family run by an extremely horrific, evil, twisted woman. I found it to be compelling reading, and I highly recommend it.

Very Useful Book

"This book gives you a good understanding of concrete mix design.A great deal of information is provided on the anti-permeability of concrete. Practical examples are also given which are very useful in explaining how to make an economical concrete mix. Highly recommended."

Recently, there are quite a few readers run into the versions of the LEED exams that have many questions on refrigerants (CFC, HCFC, and HFC), the following advice will help you answer these questions correctly:

This is a VERY important document that you need to become familiar with. Many real LEED exam questions (CFC, HCFC, and HFC, etc.) come from this document. You need to download it for free and read it at least 3 times.

Pay special attention to the Table on ODP and GWP on page 3. You do not have to remember the exact value of all ODPs and GWPs, but you do need to know the rough number for various groups of refrigerants."

This latest trend regarding refrigerants (CFC, HCFC, and HFC) for LEED Exams has a lot to do with LEED v4 Credit Weighting. EA (including refrigerants) is a big winner in LEED v4, meaning the category has MORE questions than any other areas for ALL the LEED exams. See portion of my book, LEED GA Exam Guide quoted below:

How are LEED credits allocated and weighted?
Answer: Credits that can contribute to LEED's "Impact Categories" are given more points. These impact categories are weighted through a consensus driven process:
· Global Climate Change (35%)
· Social Equity, Environmental Justice, and Community Quality of Life (5%)
· Individual Human Health and well-being (20%)
· Greener Economy (5%)
· Biodiversity and Ecosystem (10%)
· Water Resources (15%)
· Sustainable and Regenerative Material Resources Cycles (10%)

The USGBC uses three association factors to measure and scale credit outcome to a given Impact Category component:
· Relative Efficacy: It measures whether a credit outcome has a positive or negative association with a given Impact Category component, and how strong that association is.
§ No association
§ Low association
§ Medium association
§ High association
§ Negative association

· Benefit Duration: How long will the benefits or consequences of the credit outcome last?
§ 1-3 Years
§ 4-10 Years
§ 11-30 Years
§ 30+ Years (Building/Community Lifetime)

· Controllability of Effect: It indicates which individual is most directly responsible for achieving the expected credit outcome. The more a credit outcome depends on active human effort, the less likely it will be achieved with certainty, and the credit will have fewer pints, vice versa.

The USGBC simplifies the weighting process of points into a score card:
· 100 base points for the base LEED Rating System
· 1 point minimum for each credit
· Whole points and no fractions for LEED points.

Why "LEED GA Mock Exams (LEED v4)" is needed?

First of all, there are many people who passed the LEED GA Exam by reading my book, "LEED Green Associate Exam Guide" ONLY. There is one reader passed the LEED Green Associate Exam by studying my book for three days.

Secondly, people learn in many different ways. Some people learn better by doing extra mock exams. If you want to be safe and do additional sample tests to find out if you are ready for the real exam, I would suggest "LEED GA Mock Exams (LEED v4)."

We want our practice questions to be harder to make the readers nervous and force them to go back and review the study materials in my book a few more times.

This approach is apparently working. A set of hard mock exam can be very helpful: What does not kill you makes you stronger.

We want your LEED knowledge to peak on the day of the LEED GA Exam, NOT before or after. One way to achieve this goal is to make you nervous and keep the pressure on, and you will be willing to go back and seriously study and keep reviewing the materials in my book. It is a hard fight against human brain's natural tendency to forget things:

"The process of memorization is like filling a cup with a hole at the bottom: You need to fill it faster than the water leaks out at the bottom, and you need to constantly fill it; otherwise, it will quickly be empty.

Once you memorize something, your brain has already started the process of forgetting it. It is natural. That is how we have enough space left in our brain to remember the really important things." ---Quoted from page 5 of "LEED Green Associate Exam Guide."

Our goal is for "LEED Green Associate Exam Guide" to stand alone. In fact, there are readers who passed the LEED GA Exam by reading "LEED Green Associate Exam Guide" ONLY. One reader passed the LEED GA Exam by studying it for three days. If you choose ANY other books (most of them constantly refer you back to the 817-page USGBC reference guide, and do not stand alone at all) or study materials, you need at least 3 weeks to even go through their study materials once, let alone reviewing the materials several times or passing the LEED GA Exam.

To balance your exam prep effort, the sample tests in "LEED GA Mock Exams" are very close to the real exams. They will definitely help you.

I got 193/200 on LEED GA exam by just using this book, I gave my exam after 15 days of prep (2-3 hrs each day). There was no other resource avaiable for me to prepare for LEED GA and I relied solely on this book. The questions in the exam were directly from this book.

Passed the GA After One Weekend of Studying

Helped me pass the LEED GA with only a weekend of studying. Best to use this book as a practice but also look up every term that you don't know. If a question gives 5 options, don't just try to answer the question but also understand what the other 4 options actually are since they might be a term that gets asked in a different question. Most everything you don't know from the book can be found on google so no additional material was required for me.

Lite Christianity or the Real Deal? It's your choice!

"In today's culture, many people want 'More me, less God.'
We need more than a diluted, decaffeinated version of discipleship.
We need the real thing."

Glen Berteau alerts his readers to recent trends in western culture to trivialize or lighten everything. We eat lite foods and drink lite beverages. We are focused on reducing our responsibilities and adding more benefits. We want life to focus on us. We want our needs to be met. This philosophy of life is creeping into our churches to the point where we want a lite Jesus and a lite church. But does this viewpoint of life work? Is our relationship with Christ enriched and enhanced when we adopt this way of living? We don't need imitation Christianity; we need the real thing, the real Jesus and the real God. If you want to experience the richness of a close relationship with Christ Jesus, this is the book for you.

The book is set up for individual study, small group study, and classes. But you can also read it through as you would any book on the topic of discipleship. Personally, I would use this for individual devotions, journaling my thoughts after each section. There are eight chapters with review questions at the end of each chapter. Each chapter has many sections that can be adapted for daily devotional use. Scattered throughout each chapter are what I like to call "truth bullets". They are short statements that hit at the heart of the issue being covered in that chapter. Here are a few of my favorite bullets: "Here's the truth: Jesus didn't come to hurt you. He came to kill you." "Jesus never altered his message to fit His audience." "People can be very religious without being godly." "God never wastes our past or our pain."

The first chapter discusses and explains the "more me, less God" philosophy infiltrating our churches--the desire to have benefits without responsibility. What are these responsibilities we opt to live without? We want to be saved, but without power, without prayer, without cost, without offense, and without sharing. We want to be saved without making an impact on our world. "In Christianity Lite people talk often about the love of God. All the pious words and platitudes taste great, but they're less filling--they don't call people to a full-hearted devotion to Christ and His cause."

The author's writing style is clear and direct. He uses real life examples and numerous analogies to explain his points. He wants us to know that no one, absolutely no one is beyond God's grace. His book calls us to serious discipleship, but he assures us that it isn't what we do that wins God's favor, but the attitudes of our heart. "If you've been drinking Christianity Lite, spit it out! God is tugging on your heart...throw your heart wide open. Stop demanding that Jesus dance to your tune, and begin living the adventure of risk and real blessing." He explains that Christianity Lite promises we can live any way we want and do what we want. But the Biblical Jesus came to destroy sin, embarrass the flesh, insult the sinful nature, and transform our selfishness into humility and devotion to God. God's intent is to transform us!
