Convicted last year of murdering millionaire heiress Irene Silverman in New York City and waiting to stand trial for a second murder in California, Sante and Kenny Kimes, mother and son, have become two of the best-known American criminals of recent years. In the wake of widespread, high-profile media coverage, this book purports to fill in missing details of Sante's murky biography. Walker, who is Sante Kimes's eldest son and half-brother to Kenny, catalogues the wrongdoings of the woman he still affectionately calls "Mom," including everything from shoplifting and theft to multiple counts of arson, insurance fraud and slavery. Walker vividly recounts his childhood with Sante and her third husband, Ken Kimes, detailing how the couple indoctrinated him into criminality. The author, who appears to be exorcising personal demons, does a fine job of elucidating the psychological and emotional price of being loved and cared for by a sociopath. It is this tension, between the loving mother and the criminal willing to neglect and at times even betray her child, that pushes the story forward. Unfortunately, the litany of crimes is so vast and comes so fast that the narrative never quite lingers long enough to develop real drama or suspense. Well researched and touching, though, it testifies to how one son can evolve into a killer and the other live to tell the tale. As a chronicle of Sante Kimes's life, it's unlikely to be surpassed by any other. The only person likely to tell a more intimate tale is Sante herself. Photos not seen by PW. The authors tell a compellingly sordid and ultimately very sad story that began, at least for the newspaper-reading and TV news-watching public, when a middle-aged woman named Sante Kimes and her twentysomething son, Kenny, were arrested for murdering a wealthy woman in New York City as part of an involved plot to abscond with her money and possessions. But there is much more to the story than that, and Walker, Sante's older son and Kenny's half-brother, tells it all in astounding detail. Sante Kimes was a finagler, con artist, manipulator, and thief from practically the first day she drew breath; soon enough, murderer would be added to her list of labels. Perhaps the most amazing aspect of her career in crime was the way she was able to enlist her two sons in her brazen illegal activities. Author Kent wised up to his mother, although it took him a long time to summon the strength to pull away from this Lady Svengali. But unfortunate Kenny, now incarcerated, as is Sante, seems yet to understand that he was psychologically poisoned by his mother. A movie attempting to tell Sante Kimes' story would be criticized for being overblown and implausible. And yet, this story is neither; instead, it is one of the most engrossing true-crime accounts to be published in recent memory. Expect this compelling book to get all the attention it deserves. One Crazy Mama

Entertaining, shocking (in terms of her child abuse, mostly) and bizarre. Walker's life is almost like a controlled psych experiment of the effects of criminal behavior on a child. Luckily, he turned out ok but his brother didn't. The reader, like Walker, can't really understand or know how and why Kimes was so compulsively, insanely criminal. We can guess that her impoverished unstable upbringing, which is mysterious given her compulsive lying, had much to do with it. Walker also credits a neighbor for intervening and giving him some stabilizing influence in his life when he needed it; the men in her life were too much under her sway to be good parents for Walker. Interesting that this neighbor's husband was a retired cop; this would be the perfect couple since she could be the mother figure and a cop could spot Kimes' pathology and not be taken in by her.
I won't give it away, but the new edition comes with an epilogue that is every bit as surprising as the rest of the book. Needless to say, Kimes was a mystery and a shyster from a family of mysterious shysters, apparently.
My favorite scene involves Kimes attempting to beat a summons by having a friend dress up as her, as he put it, "identical twin snowbunnies" or some such weirdness, and show up claiming that the 'wrong' Sante had been served! Walker states this was the kind of insanity and boldness that Kimes not only would pull, but could suck other people into participating in.
Written in a down-to-earth style that moves along briskly. Fun, if unnerving and weird. I'm amazed that Walker emerged as a decent person; what a testament to how intervening in the lives of youth at risk can pay off. Hats off to him for surviving this insanity.

Interesting read

On the plus side, the book certainly revealed the mindset of Sante Kimes and the sad consequences of her sociopathy on her sons. It is a sad tale full of unnecessary pain and loss, one that seems to repeat itself over generations. I can certainly understand the author's personal concern about the impact of it on his children.
Conversely, while I did keep coming back to the book, it didn't capture my attention as others have done or cause me to read through the night to morning. Much of that is due to the style of the writing.
It is a relatively chronological memoir and is written in a very conversational style. Perhaps that was my issue. A number of incidents were written about throughout that were used as examples of Santes thinking and behavior that did not fit in the timeframe being discussed. These were later written about in greater detail when the timeline was appropriate but left the impression that more stuff had happened than was actually presented in the book when, in reality, some things were simply repeated.
Which is not to say that was all she did only that it started as something of an evaluation of her mindset with examples and then turned into a full on memoir.
The other thing that was both off-putting and admirable was the repetition of Kent's angst and internal right/wrong discussions and the repeated explanations on why he stayed with his family and why he kept going back. Clearly, Kent wanted to both take responsibility for what he did and didn't do but also wanted to explain it with the usual "I did it because they're my family and I love them". I don't know that I would have taken the same return to mama path he took so many times but I can't possibly put myself in his shoes anyway. What got old, was the ongoing angst he continued to relate.
Still, I would think the act of writing and publishing this book must have been a catharsis for Kent given everything he's expressed in this book.
I simply would have structured it differently and been more succinct.
That would, likely, change the way the story is perceived so, I must say, he got published, I didn't.

An insider's perspective on Sante and Kenny Kimes

I applaud Kenneth Walker not only for writing this riveting account of growing up with a sociopath for a mother, but also for being able to think for himself enough not to get sucked in to her lies and crimes. At times, especially when he was younger and more naive, he did actually get manipulated into some of her schemes, but as he grew up and began to see his mother for the predator she was, he determined he didn't want any part of it. But it was not so easy for him to pull away from her. She was, after all, his mother. And she had a side to her that was fun and exciting. She could also be loving (at least in her own twisted way) and fiercely protective of him. But the down side was that she was extremely controlling, endlessly manipulating, and made his growing-up years a chaotic and turbulent hell.
I've read a number of articles about Sante and Kenny, but this book offers a much deeper look into the twisted mess that was Sante. She wasn't a typical "successful" sociopath, as are many people in business, politics and other fields. Those people usually are users and manipulators, and can be extremely ruthless in achieving what they want, uncaring about those they exploit or ruin along the way. But they do it as a means to an end. There is logic in their sociopathy. Sante possessed all of those antisocial characteristics, but there was something self-sabotaging inside her too. She just could not leave well enough alone. She'd spent years looking for her "millionaire", and finally found him in Kenneth Kimes Sr. Had she been satisfied with that, she could have kicked back and led a very comfortable life with all the perks that come with being a wealthy man's wife. But no. She was seemingly addicted to her schemes. No matter how much she had, it was never enough for her. She wanted more, more, MORE, and concocted some bizarre and convoluted schemes to achieve what she wanted.
The woman ruined many, many lives along the way. Especially those of her sons and her husbands. Her "friends" were only people she saw as useful to her in some way and when they were no longer useful to her, they were no longer needed in her life. In reading about all of her crimes and exploits, it's astounding that she got away with as much as she did for as long as she did. She did get arrested a few times, and even served prison time for using "maids" as slaves. She was incapable of having an ordinary employer-employee relationship with low-paid servants. She had to be 100% controlling of them, working them 7 days a week for only room and board, with no actual pay whatsoever. She chose naive, undocumented immigrants who barely spoke English, promising them wonderful jobs working for her, and then cruelly exploited them, stealing their identification, threatening them and imprisoning them.
It took Kenneth a long time to really be able to stand up to his mother and say "no" to her. And even more time to finally just cut her out of his life altogether. He really hated her for what she did to his younger brother, Kenny. And he felt some guilt in that, too, thinking he should've done more to help Kenny get out of her clutches. Instead, Kenny eventually became totally brainwashed by her, completely bought into all her paranoia and lies, and was quick to do her evil bidding, which ultimately ended him in prison for life.
This book is a fascinating study of an extremely dysfunctional family run by an extremely horrific, evil, twisted woman. I found it to be compelling reading, and I highly recommend it.
