Simple and easy to read

This is exactly what I was looking for. We are visiting Europe next year and I wanted a book that gave me a little bit of history on Louis XIV. The book was easy to read and to understand with great details about the life and history of Louis XIV and his parents. I was pleasantly surprised.

I had started reading Thomas Carlyle's "The French Revolution" but realized I needed to go back a bit to understand what brought the revolution on. Based on a friends recommendation I went back to Louis XIV. This was a very well written book, there are so many players in the french court but I was able to keep them all straight with the way it was explained. I have since read Duc Saint-Simones memoir on the court of Louis XIV and this book has turned out to be very beneficial.

Not good for critical book reports

The book didn't talk much about Mazarin's successor or Marquis de Louvis and his role as minister of war. It really focused on the details of the blood line and the politics, which made it look as if no one was concerned about the matters these men handles. They would have had an easier time proving his reign was lousy if the author included this information in detail.

Pricing and Revenue Optimization fills the need for a rigorous yet accessible introduction to the field more commonly known as revenue management. The author presents key pricing decisions such as airline revenue management, markdown management, and customized pricing as constrained optimization problems. It is the only broadly accessible consistent treatment of these topics in one place. The intended audience is MBA and MS level students and managers with solid quantitative backgrounds. Linear programming, probabilistic modeling, and some calculus is used. This book neatly fills the space between the popular treatment in Cross's "Revenue Management" and the much more mathematical "Theory and Practice of Revenue Management" by Talluri and van Ryzin. The book is well written and presents plenty of real-world grounding as well as the necessary mathematics. It is written as a textbook but would also serve for any quantitatively-oriented analyst or manager wanting to know how math models can be used to improve pricing. As a textbook, it is a little short of problems and I would have liked to see chapters on forecasting and price-response estimation. It is the best available introduction to this important topic for the MBA-level student or practitioner.

Conceptually clear, clearly explained, with many examples, even though most of them refferring to the airline business, gives a claer overview with enough but not much complexity ( maths, statistics, etc ) to get for anyone with some knowledge in this fields, the book gives the pronciples to understand what Revenue Optimization is, and the different aproaches related with this field.

It's not for someone without any knowledge in sciemce, niether for an expert. I encourege Dr Phillips to go a step forward, from the conceptual issues and simple examples, to bring us a second, thord, book, step step by step focused in bring us the tools to for implementation this theme for different Indistries. Recommended !!'

Excellent treatment of the subject

The author has written this book very well in terms of content,quality and organization. However, he could have added some enhanced topics. For example, how to segment the market into n optimal segments rather than just 2 segments. Unlike other titles, this book has sufficient mathematical treatment of the subject. The book is must for college graduates and professionals who wants to learn the subject of PRO. Finally, it is five star book.

About the Author
Dr. Frederick P. Stutz is Emeritus Professor of Geography at San Diego State University. He received his Ph.D. at Michigan State University, his M.A. at Northwestern University, and B.A. at Valparaiso University. His research interests include Urban Traveler Behavior, GIS Disaster Evacuation of City Traffic, and U.S.-Mexican Border Area Travel Needs Assessment. He is currently working on a project involving Energy and Travel Sustainability—Space-Time Utility Measures for Urban Travel Purposes.

Barney Warf is Professor of Geography at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1985. His current areas of research are political economy, social theory, producer services, financial markets, telecommunications, the geography of cyberspace, military spending, and international trade. He has authored or edited 5 books, 2 encyclopedias, and 100 journal articles.

Delivers some useful facts but extremely theoretically confused

I actually want to give this book 2.5 stars but can't. Anyhow it's OK but not great. A lot of the stuff in here is things that a person would know if they paid even a little attention to world issues. I guess it's fair to try to be comprehensive and some people have just got to start *somewhere* but I shudder to think who is graduating from college anymore. My most serious complaint is that, theoretically, this book is a mess, and I do mean a *mess*. At some times, neoclassical economic approaches are presented without criticism, including the ubiquitous supply / demand curve graphs, and at other times Marxist and even more radical constructivist views in the Marxist vein are emphatically asserted to be true, along with a mélange of other heterodox viewpoints. Now I am heterodox myself but this crap just doesn't make sense. For instance, at one point, the authors are dismissing the major arguments for protectionism in trade, but then criticizing the policies of the Bretton Woods institutions only a few pages later. Also, the authors should be made well aware that Bethlehem Steel is now defunct and the main site in Bethlehem proper has been converted to a casino. Get up to speed, guys.

Solid learning

Solid book on the world of Geography and Economics that pertain to it. It is a bit heavy with the complicated lingo and concepts at times, but I did take decent notes while reading which helped immensely. My professor was good to guide me through the book in class and as a result I am getting good grades. If this isn't your major or general expertise, it will get dull since it talks about the general economics and surrounding areas in geography.

I got this book as it was required for my World Ecomonics class. Luckily it is a easy and fun read, not just informative. The authors of the book have organized it well, and I've enjoyed the historical aspects as well the current information.
