Move past the obstacles and implement your new strategy

Move is your guide to mobilizing your whole organization to take your business forward. Whatever your needed transformation may be: a new initiative, a new market, a new product, your fresh strategy is up against a powerful foe: an organization's tendency to stay very busy and completely engaged what it's already doing. This book shows you how to cut through resistance and get your team engaged and proactively doing the new thing! Author Patty Azzarello draws on over twenty-five years of international business management experience to identify the chronic challenges that keep organizations from decisively executing strategy, and to give you a practical game plan for breaking through. Leaders tend to assume that stalls in execution are inevitable, unchanging parts of the workplace—but things can change. At the heart of every execution problem is the fact that there simply are not enough people doing what the business needs. This guide shows you how to get your entire organization on board—remove the fear, excuses, and hurdles—and uphold the new pursuit against distractions and dissent.

No transformation can succeed without suitable engagement from the whole organization, but building engagement can be difficult, uncomfortable, and tentative. This book shows you how to get it done.

  • Get your organization to embrace and personally commit to the new work
  • Remove obstacles and passive aggressive attacks that block progress
  • Defend new strategic initiatives against short term pressures to revert to "business as usual"
  • Sustain momentum and the desire to move forward
  • Make sure no one is ever asking, 'Are we still doing this?'

Inertia isn't just a law of the universe, it's a law in the workplace that can be a major obstacle to making things happen. The great thing about inertia is that it cuts two ways: a body at rest remains at rest, but a body in motion remains in motion. People love to finish things. Move shows you how to make successful execution the new norm—starting today.

From the Inside Flap

Too many new initiatives lose drive and direction before they finish. At the beginning, when a team first commits to implementing a new strategy, there is great energy and enthusiasm — driven by the allure of the end goal. But then comes the long, dangerous part in "The Middle" where everything needs to get done, obstacles inevitably spring up, and people feel a strong temptation to revert to the old ways. MOVE explains how to keep your team focused, motivated, and resilient enough to push through the unavoidable, chronic challenges that derail most change initiatives.

Some of the most recognizable brands in the world use the MOVE methodology to ensure their change strategies don't stall. Business transformation expert Patty Azzarello explains the four components of a prosperous business transformation, and exactly what it takes to keep everyone moving the new strategy forward, including:

  • The key elements in an execution plan that guarantee accountability and momentum
  • Empowering tools for transforming the team you have into the team you need
  • A powerful new way to think about leading and communicating, to genuinely engage people throughout the implementation

Your company has a lot riding on the strategic changes it needs to make. The MOVE model will help you make sure that everyone stays engaged, maintains momentum, and that your initiatives succeed.

A Book to Lead By for Top Business Executives
By InnovationBlue LLC
I’ve known Patty Azzarello for twenty years, and if you are an organizational leader she has created a tremendous gift for you in the form of her new book MOVE: How Decisive Leaders Execute Strategy Despite Obstacles, Setbacks, and Stalls. Like Patty, I’ve been a successful senior leader especially of turn arounds and break through initiatives for about thirty years. She’s been at different times my inspired leader, coach, friend and confidant. Since my years working directly with her I’ve had my own challenges, discoveries and also ended up doing executive consulting.

In that time I’ve had the personal fortune of working closely with principles at the very best-of-the-best at the now defunct Arthur Anderson, Bain Consulting, Boston Consulting Group, KPMG, McKinsey & Co and several more. If I had set out to write down my own pearls on business leadership, it would be pretty much what Patty has decided to freely share through her book. It is the best of all this collective wisdom - only better. She has personally tested and taught everything put forward here. If you were to go hire one of these prestigious - and very expensive firms - you would generally actually work with a well educated MBA or similarly degreed person steeped in one school of thought, one methodology. But not someone who has actually led a business outside of consulting.

MOVE transcends methodologies with the real and human deep wisdom, hard won and from one of very few people whose career has reached beyond into multiple, diverse industries and business challenges. There are many other useful management books that abound on business fundamentals, improvement methodologies, metric and measurements, etc… If those books are your toolbox, this book should be your new bible - where you go to check your approach and as a source of how to redefine problems, and most importantly as a source of personal confidence and hope. I have seen and put pretty much every principle in here into action, or in a few cases watched others put these principles into action. This is no ivory tower exercise; this is the real beef.

If you are just stepping out into your leadership career - well you are in luck, because you now have a field guide. Her ideas here are useful at every level of leadership; the broader your responsiblities, the more you can leverage here.

But what most sets my friend Patty Azzarello aside is her solid foundation of ethics and how to treat people. Our environment abounds with leaders at all levels who believe in kill or be killed. Who believe every contest is win/lose. There are better, and more successful ways to lead which at every turn give all concerned the opportunity to learn, grow, change and transform. That is a world I can believe in. This demands a better leader, and better ways of leading. You can’t do it alone. And Patty has given it here, on silver platter so to speak. The cost of the book is a token - the generosity behind it significant.

For those who are impressed by this book, her first book RISE continues to be tremendously helpful to a bastion of today’s best leaders, and I want to close this short review by also endorsing her as a consultant. There is a lot more market demand than there is available Patty, but if you are lucky enough you will find her among the top coaches and consultants to the best executives and just a great human being to help you change seemingly hopeless problems into challenges with great rewards to be earned through your own transformation.

You got an education to learn the frameworks, the tools and the methods. Read RISE to learn how to optimize your own career, and when you are ready to become a great leader read MOVE to learn how to really achieve accomplishment and results. Your people will love you for every parcel she offers here, which you in turn adapt into your own style of leadership.

Practical and insightful advice from someone that has actually done it.
By Paul Avenant
I liked Patty's previous book, RISE, so much I bought a copy for my entire team. Her new book, MOVE, is focused on how to move strategy into successful, sustained implementation. I will not try to summarize her whole book (it is better to read it yourself) but here is what I will say. I have no hesitation recommending it to anyone whether you manage a small team or a large organization. It is a book that provides strong insight and excellent, practical advice that will help you and your team be more successful and it is written in a straightforward, plain-speak manner, that make you feel like a coach/mentor is talking to you one on one. And the advice comes from someone (Patty) that has been there and done that - who speaks from first-hand experience of being a General Manager and CEO, as well as advising other GEOs and business leaders. It's practical. It's insightful. It's no-nonsense. It's easy to read. It WILL help make a difference in your organization. And as a bonus it comes with a sense of humor.

Get past ideation, deliberation and organizational stalling. Get MOVE!
By Shannon Caldwell
I was thrilled when I received an early copy of MOVE. I have followed Patty and leveraged her consulting services since meeting her at a CIO event back in 2008. Her pragmatic advice and coaching has served me well and gotten me through a number of "plot twists" in my own career. Her book RISE focused on career growth and advancement. MOVE goes a step further in giving guidance on how to actually get things done in transformational situations -- which is ALL BUSINESSES. ALL DAY. EVERY DAY. I only wish I had this resource 5 years ago! Change management is hard, y'all. Ideating on the "things" that are wrong, or that need to happen-- that's the easy part. Getting through the change, driving the change through the "MIDDLE" and leading to deliver real outcomes is where MOVE focuses. Taking the M.O.V.E. model and applying it in even the smallest situations can propel you further towards your goals and make you and your team heroes. I can't wait to update this review in a few months after I have had time to reflect and leverage Patty's wise words.
