Not so in-depth

"Office 2010 In Depth" is my second "In Depth" book from the series by Que Publishing. My initial impression is that while "Excel 2010 In Depth" (the first "In Depth" book I read) errs on the side of assuming the reader has certain knowledge, this volume errs on the side of the reader having very little knowledge. So while waiting to go "beyond the basics...beneath the surface" as the series' tagline states, the reader is instructed on how to do rudimentary tasks like highlight text selections and how to enter data into a cell. As an everyday Office user, I really didn't find much here that I didn't already know which was disappointing. Now this isn't to say the book is a total loss for someone already familiar with Microsoft Office.

For someone moving to 2010 from 2003, Chapter 1 touches on the new features and even discusses the process of upgrading (though I suspect most people reading the book have already done so) while Chapter 2 moves into navigating the ribbon. Chapter 5 discusses the new Office Web Apps. Having reading "Using Office Web Apps" by Paul McFedries, I can tell you that author Joe Habraken tells you here about all you need to know in 27 pages.

For the most part the book is logically organized with the basic commands and most popular Office programs first, though Access is a puzzling omission from the book. There are lots of screenshots, though not enough "after" shots of the technique being discussed. I think readers would benefit from more glimpses of the finished product rather than pictures of the menu locations. And there are LOTS of photos of menus.

I think Habraken did a nice job explaining the different chart types in Excel with brief explanations of when you might use each. He also did a great job of explaining PivotTables. I thought the PowerPoint chapter was also especially well done. Finally, I applaud the inclusion of OneNote in the book - a program many - including myself - are not terribly familiar with.

For someone moving to the ribbon for the first time or looking to move beyond the most basic functions of Office, I think Habraken has created a reference book that will help them move up. For those like myself who are already comfortable with the new interface and are intermediate-to-advanced users, I'm not sure they're going to get a lot of mileage out of this book aside from a nugget here or there.

Very useful: describes a lot of functions I didn't know exist

Half of learning to do something more efficiently is knowing what tools you have to work with. Office is so powerful a program, having a book that covers all the features is invaluable. This book is about 2 inches thick and covers everything including the kitchen sink. A great resource.

I have been trying to streamline what I do at work for about 6 months now. One task in particular has been a pet project of mine to streamline. It typically takes 5-6 hours to put together, and lot of it is repetitive. I sicced our IT guys on coming up with a program or other way to steamline it. Nothing. I have talked to the word-processing folks, who had some useful ideas, which gave me one solution, but the solution is not very user friendly. But it did cut the 5 hour project down to about 1 hour. I figured there has got to be yet a better way.

I nabbed this book and borrowed a host of other books from my library. This one mentions more features per program than the other books I have used. Largely, I am interested in Word, but for a comprehensive manual, it covers Word better than some of the Word-specific manuals do. This one goes in depth into various features and has given me a third solution to accomplish what I want. Some of other books didn't even mention it, or only in passing as too complicated to cover in their book. I now have the 5 hour task cut down to about 20 minutes. That's what computers are all about, and I couldn't have gotten there without this book.

Office 2010 In Depth sits on my desk and is definitely my go-to manual for all things Office.

Solid but dry reading

The good: This book is comprehensive, well organized, and full of information that will help someone upgrading from Office 2007 to Office 2010 get up to speed quickly on the changes to Office. It will also serve as a resource for resolving specific issues that crop up from time to time (e.g. how do I convert a file type again?) while using Office 2010. The author includes useful tips based on his own experiences, such as the use of Quick Steps in Outlook to streamline often-used commands. All of the Office applications are covered here, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and OneNote. The Table of Contents and Index are complete and easy to use. New features, such as Excel Sparklines (small charts inserted in a worksheet), are covered in detail and their advantages highlighted. Even heavy Office users will get some utility from the detailed descriptions of the more advanced tools, such as Excel PivotTable/PowerPivot and Office macros.

The bad: This is not the book to review without a cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage in hand - he doesn't use humor, graphics, or engaging examples, and it is lengthy (almost 1000 pages!). If you are upgrading from Office 2003 or earlier to Office 2010, this book may not be for you. The author assumes that the reader is familiar with the new Office "ribbon" that first appeared in Office 2007 that organizes commands in a completely different manner than in pre-2007 versions, so there's not much sympathy for those (like me) who suffer daily bouts of frustration in not being able to find commands that are no longer where they are "supposed to be". In fact, his tone and the book's content are decidedly "pro-ribbon", in that he presents all of the wonderful improvements of Office 2010 without describing workarounds or acknowledging the drawbacks to the ribbon.

Nicely organized, follow First Aid

These cards have been very helpful in my Step 1 preparation. They really only cover the important pathogens, pretty much in line with what First Aid covers.

They're nicely organized, with a road map before each group - a card containing a flow chart with all the RNA viruses before the actual RNA virus cards, for example.

They have a clinical vignette on one side with a picture, usually an animation of what you would see on culture. Better description of the bug, associated disease(s), treatment, etc. on the back.

Overall I really like these.

Online QBank is poor quality, cards are decent.

The other reviewers covered the cards pretty well. I'd like to address the 70 question qbank included with the set.

The questions are poor quality. Some of them have more than one correct answer. They purport to be "board style" but many of them are "which statement is false" type questions, which are not used on the boards. Sometimes choices can be ruled out because they directly contradict something in the question stem.

The software is poor quality. In exam mode, you can only get feedback on the answer choice you selected. This is useless when the correct answer has the explanation and the incorrect one you selected only says "incorrect." It doesn't keep track of which questions you've seen, so expect repeats if you don't do it all in one 70 question block. You have to scroll through a tiny window to read the question and scroll through a second tiny window to read the feedback, which, again, is sometimes useless.

I used all my USMLEWorld micro questions and I was looking forward to supplementing them with these. It turned out to be a waste of time.

So, memorizing all those stuff from Micro can be pretty tough for some people- mainly, me! But these cards are SO high-yield, it's ridiculous. It also gives you the classic case on the other side of the card.
MUST HAVE!!!!! Really helped me pull up my grade in Micro and focus my attention for the Step 1

... all three books in this series and what a wonderful test of true love

I read all three books in this series and what a wonderful test of true love, for family and for friends. A love that could last through any and all types of trials and tribulation. There were times that I thought that if it were me, I don't think, I would have been able to handle the situation the main characters of the story did - Nanzee, Basil, Blaise and Gwen and not to eliminate Cynthia. My hat's off to the writer, Edna Taylor, of this series and I will definitely be reading more of what she writes or has written.

To my surprise, the story picks up with the new narrative and opens the world of supporting characters to a new light. It turns the story sideways into a deliciously written yet another chapter of the Love's clan.

About the Author
Dr. Floch is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University where he recently formed the Fellow’s Clinic in the Digestive Disease Section supervising all gastrointestinal trainees in consultation on problem cases. He is a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology (MACG) and an American Gastroenterology Association Fellow (AGAF) as well as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). He formerly was Chairman of Medicine at Norwalk Hospital and the Founding Chief of Gastroenterology and Nutrition in Norwalk. He is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and has written five books including the 2nd edition of the textbook “Netter’s Gastroenterology”.

Dr. Floch is renowned for his work in gastric and intestinal diseases and probiotics. He lectures nationally and internationally, haven given Grand Rounds at Harvard, Brown, UMass, and UConn among others. He is a consultant to Pfizer, Proctor & Gamble, Dannon, Shire and Biocodex.

His research has been extensive in gastroenterology having had grants from the Armed Forces and National Institute of Health.

Dr. Floch has a FWCI of 1.18 and has the majority (76%) of his content published in gastroenterology journals. 8.7% of his work appears in the top 10% most cited journals worldwide.

Dr. Floch has experience with national, international, institutional and single authorship.

Dr. Ringel has been involved in clinical and translational research related to functional gastrointestinal disorders for over 15 years. His research relates to the effect of clinical, physiological and psychosocial factors on the intestinal physiology and functional gastrointestinal symptoms. He is an expert in clinical research and has been involved in the design, evaluation and conduct of clinical trials evaluating new drugs, dietary and food supplements, and new approaches for diagnosis and treatment of patients with GI disorders. He was awarded two grants from the National Institute of Health (NIDDK) to examine the role of intestinal microbiome and intestinal inflammation and immune function in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr. Ringel is a recipient of several prestigious awards including from the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA), the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group (FBG). He is a member of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) Education Committee and an associate editor for the Neurogastroenterology and Motility, Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, and the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Ringel has published multiple original articles, reviews, editorials and book chapters and he is frequently invited to share his experience and present his work at national and international professional and scientific meetings.

Dr. Walker is a professor in the Harvard School of Public Health. His research is focused within the Developmental Gastroenterology Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital-East and has been in the development of gastrointestinal host defenses, particularly as they pertain to the role of enteric nutrients.

He has studied the passive and active properties of human breast milk, specifically in the pre-term infant as it relates to necrotizing enterocolitis, a devastating gastrointestinal infection in the neonatal period. He has also developed human models of intestinal development (cell lines, organ cultures, microUssing chambers and fetal intestinal xenografts) to determine the effect of protective nutrients (pre- and probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, nucleotides, etc.) on stimulating mucosal defenses in the immature intestine and in preventing neonatal diseases.

A major commitment of his lab is to train clinical/postdoctoral fellows in clinical translational research. They collaborative with clinical investigators to translate observations made in human models of intestinal development at the laboratory level, into clinical trials and ultimately to multicenter studies.

Dr. Walker has a FWCI of 2.83 and has 36.2% of his content published in gastroenterology journals. 34.1% of his work appears in the top 10% most cited journals worldwide.

Too many typos in the e-book translation!

It is an interesting, if rather unfocussed, satire on the culture of post-Civil War America. Mark Twain's sharply critical views of the U.S. Congress of that era are unfortunately true today. Mark Twain was an expert author and editor and would probably view with distain the e-book translation which contains frequent typos both of words and punctuation - about one every page or two - which are a distraction for the reader.

The Tour de France: A Cultural History.

In writing The Tour de France: A Cultural History, Christopher Thompson has done that very rare thing: he has increased our net knowledge of the Tour de France. This is extraordinary given that the Tour has been the subject of writers for over 100 years. Mountains of books have been written about the Tour.

This isn't a book devoted to who dropped whom on what climb. Thompson is fishing in deeper waters. Why is the Tour the way it is? How has it affected French culture and how did French culture affect the Tour? The answers to these questions are important to any cycling fan who wants to know why he has to get up early in the morning to watch a race that is taking place 9 time zones away.

Lance Armstrong voiced his anger that the Tour de France took place in France. Yet, the Tour could only have grown and matured in France. Britain, as a result of the industrial revolution, clustered its population in cities. This made it perfect for stadium sports but ill-suited for cycle road racing. France remained a rural country well into the twentieth century making it perfect for the traveling show that is the Tour. Also, the Tour encouraged and celebrated foreign winners while the Giro connived at denying foreign riders a fair shot at victory. Moreover, the Tour was founded by a strangely gifted man, Henri Desgrange, who guided the Tour from its infancy to sturdy maturity with an iron-fisted despotism. Thompson analyzes the changes to French society that made mass-spectator sport possible at the end of the nineteenth century and how Desgrange exploited them.

The Tour de France, being a cultural history, discusses at length the riders and their economic and social position in society and how it has changed over the years. There is also a very enlightening discussion of doping, a component of racing that cannot be ignored.

This is a wonderful book that will leave the reader with a deeper understanding of the Tour and France. Read this book. It is well written and exhaustively researched. Thompson's passion for bicycle racing and French history makes each page a pleasure.

There is a bonus. The cover photo of 1947 Tour winner Jean Robic being doused with water by a couple running alongside him has to be one of the greatest cycling pictures of all time. Their obvious joy juxtaposed alongside the struggling rider encapsulates the attraction of the Tour far more than any 1000 words could possibly hope to do.

I enjoy French culture and I'm a huge fan of the Tour de France so this book was a perfect read for me. It opened my eyes to the concept that major sporting events are an ingrained part of national culture and politics. For instance, who would have known that there's a connection between the Dreyfus affair and the Tour de France? Or that the French communists thought of the racers as their poster children?

The level of detail in the author's research was outstanding. And although the book seems to have been written primarily for an academic audience, it's not a difficult read at all.

I truly appreciated the section on "The Hero Dehumanized: The Bicycle Racer as Machine" as well as the latter portions on modern-day doping and use of technology. Because of the length of the races, the repetitive nature of riding a bike and the use of mechanized equipment, pro and amateur racers, in my opinion, sometimes take on the "persona" of a machine. That is such a shame because I'd much rather watch a fallible human have one stellar performance than a robot win over and over again. That's why my number one favorite moment in the modern Tour is Christophe Agnolutto's stage win in 2000.

and if you want to understand something as enduring as the Tour de France, you need to understand something about what it meant to the people who paid for, participated in and supported it.

A very good book (and a quite remarkable work of history for an author who seems to have spent a bit too much time in the halls of an English department.)

What makes men tick? Why won't they open up? Weren't they all supposed to have gotten in touch with their feelings in the 1970s? What went wrong? According to Berkowitz, the Today Show 's correspondent on men, nothing went wrong. Men, by nature, respond differently from women, and a lot of misunderstanding could be avoided if women comprehended how men express themselves. Many recent books have explored this territory; Berkowitz maintains that men are not psychological cripples, nor women masochistic fools. Neither sex is "right" or "wrong." We're just different, and it's silly to take adversarial positions. So here is the "Boylitz" course: What he really means. No neuroses; just good sense, affection, and the occasional flash of recognition. Maybe we've finally outgrown confrontational psychobabble. Let's hope so.

few earth-shattering insights but fun to read nonetheless

With such a provocative title, you'd think this book might open the door into the secret world of Men, so all Women might from there on in understand. It's not the case. While it does offer some good reminders (men are visual, men and women are DIFFERENT, don't hint with men, etc.), some of the book feels dated and Berkowitz's tone is that of a smarmy glossy magazine writer (which he happens to be, as well as a correspondent for various daytime TV programs like Today).

The book can be read in one sitting, and since it's very light, you won't feel weighed down if you consume it all at once. Recommended, but more for fun and as a time-passer than as a real cornerstone of understanding the differences between the sexes or developing a really deep understanding of men.

Very misleading title

This book drags on and on and on with stories that attempt to be humourous, but just come up long-winded and pointless...On Berkowicz's chapter on Why Men are Jerks...he explains that women want men to be jerks...On his chapter regarding sex, he explains in detail how men love and will do anything to get it. Now, true many women are attracted to jerks, and men infact enjoy and love sex, but what's the big secret you're letting us in on here? I found the book to be rather boring, and hard to read.

If you think every man thinks the same way, does the same thing, has the same desires, and is just lumped into one cateogry, then this book will show you that. Peresonally, I like women that are real, without all of the games that we men see through anyway.

Yeah, men are visual. So are women! Men like intimacy just as much as women do. The title says more than the book does.
