I use what I learned every day

I really enjoyed this book. It taught me many valuable lessons that I still use today. Unlike so many business and self-help books the conclusions presented in this book are based on research, not psycho-babble.

Is it a bit dry? Sure. But here's what you get for patiently studying the concepts: If you are serious about getting along with others, at home and at work, this book can help you develop advanced interpersonal skills that will serve you for a lifetime. That's value.

For example, the accountants and engineers at work used to drive me nuts with their demands for more and more detail, numbers were all they cared about. I'm in Marketing so I'm easily bored. I'd become frustrated, "Why can't they (my co-workers) see the larger picture? What can't they connect the dots, it's so obvious?" I found many people to be tedious, short-sighted, unwilling to make decisions and, most importantly, act! I even considered some to be a bit dim but I knew that was wrong, these were smart people. My wife sometimes fell into this category too. Yikes! I'd struggled with this for most of my life. So what's the deal?

Here's where this book really helped me and, in a way, changed my life. What this book taught me was these "types" of people were what Merrill calls, "Analytical." They just processed the world differently than I did. I think strategically and am a "Driver." I can take a bit of information and usually extrapolate the most likely outcomes. As a teacher once told me, "you anticipate well, you can see around the corner and most people can't." Some people need to see the evidence before reaching any conclusions. That's not a bad thing, in fact it's a good thing. I don't want my doctor, or my wife, jumping to ANY rash conclusions, something I've been known to do.

This book taught me to be more patient, to better understand we're not all alike, and to both identify and communicate better with those who are different than me. And it did so in very specific terms. These are valuable life-lessons that I use each and every day.

I hope you get as much out of the book as I did.

The essential Social Styles/Personal Styles volume

The concept of Social Styles (aka Personal Styles) has been around for well over 20 years. It may have lost some of its buzz because it no longer qualifies as the latest flavor, but it is a concept that remains popular and is used widely because it offers a practical model of personality and communication. There are a number of books that address the Social Styles model, but this is the only one that reflects where is all started, from the authors who first popularized the concept. This is the essential Social Styles/Personal Styles volume.

About the Author

Bea Mikulecky holds a master's degree in TESOL and a doctorate in Applied Psycholinguistics from Boston University. In addition to teaching reading, writing, and ESL, she has worked as a teacher-trainer in the Harvard University Summer ESL Program, in the Simmons College MATESL Program, and in Moscow, Russia. Bea Mikulecky is the author of A Short Course in Teaching Reading Skills and co-author of the Reading Power series.

Linda Jeffries hold a master's degree in TESOL from Boston University. She has taught reading, writing, and ESL/EFL at Boston College, Boston University, in the Harvard University Summer ESL Program, and at the University of Opole, in Poland. She currently resides in Italy, where she has taught EFL and academic writing at the University of Bologna and the University of Modena. Linda JEffries is co-author of the Reading Power series.

i bought it for college purpose (ESL classes). it's not bad, in fact, I found it easy and it was easy for me. so you might take it if you are taking an ESL classes.

First of all this book this book is edited by Rafael Jossefy which was a bonus when i got it! You cant get any better than Rafael. Second the pages are really really fine quality, i think 100% cotton? The orchastral reduction for the second piano is just superb. This book is well worth the money... I love it

A lay-flat piano book, perfect.

Not only did I get exactly what I ordered, but this is the best piano book I own, due to the lay-flat binding. I suspect these cost more than the standard piano books but this one wasn't costly. Color me delighted.

Indestructible--Frederic Chopin would have approved.

The I. Paderewski edition of Chopin's Piano Concerto's No. 1 and 2 is the best edition I've looked at. The orchestral part is intricately transcribed for the second piano. Like all Dover products, this book and its binding are virtually indestructible...a major plus for the monumental task of mastering the greatest concertos of them all (Concerto No.2 in F minor). A good buy!

Now or Never is a guide, that offers a clear and positive approach to engaging in your own life, wholly. It's not an idle read, but an instruction manual for doing the real work. There's neither shame, nor shirking, in epic living, my friend. No mud; no lotus. It's Truth-or-Bust time, and this s#$t's about to get good, but you've got to be present and participate.

The chapters of Now Or Never are segmented by key components they agree were crucial on their own personal journeys to living fully. This simplicity not only offers clarity, no matter where you are on your own journey, it also sets up the most important signposts or dots, allowing you to do the connecting, personalizing the message. Throughout, they've included on-going exercises to help you stay present in this you-centered work, which further personalizes their message. And, THAT is exactly why I respect the authors so much: They don't sit in the backseat of your car, telling you, the actual driver, how to do you. They spread out the map on the hood of your car, at a dusty diner/pit stop, somewhere along your route, and they show you the most important parts to look for, before you get back behind the wheel and hit the road again. They purposefully give the reader space to experience and personalize the work, driving home the point: "Hey, this is your road trip, sister, no one else's. Keep on truckin'. We got your back." A guidebook for how to show up in life.

Wow. I've worked with Alexi and Preston in person, and I can't explain how clearly their hearts and service to others shine through this book. The content of this book and their work isn't the same things you hear over and over again in personal development books. It cuts right through the STORIES we tell ourselves about why we can't have the life we want and gets to HOW you change your life right off the bat. It is not a book for the weak of heart. If you want to stay a victim, have everyone around you listen to the same sob story about how your life is so hard, this book is not for you. If you aren't willing to do the work to change every part of your life that isn't working for you, this book is not for you. However, if you're ready for massive change, this is literally steps 1-5 to get you there. As they say, how you do anything is how you do everything. Be prepared to face yourself in the mirror and take action. They show us how we each have everything we need to change any issue that we're not satisfied with. Definitely a book I will be using over and over to guide me along the way.

I enjoyed this smart style writing where multiple different stories all intersect. The characters in the book made me laugh and made me cry. I completely enjoyed reading about the setting since I am very familiar with that part of the Bay Area. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

Grandmaster Evgeny Sveshnikov is one of the most respected chess opening experts in the world. He recently published the bestselling opening monographs ‘The Complete c3 Sicilian', ‘The Grand-Prix Attack' and ‘Sveshnikov vs the Anti-Sicilians'. His son, International Master Vladimir Sveshnikov is an experienced chess trainer.

5 Minutes to Figure it Out

This book delivers on the promise of a Blitz repertoire. You will have to put effort into the book and only the major defenses are covered as White. However, if you put time and effort into this book your opponent will have only 5 minutes to figure out the slightly offbeat but sound repertoire.

Ok but not the best learning tool

So far (not finished) it seems written in a less than optional sequence for learning. I get this impression from many chess books. ..the author is good at chess but not thấy good at organizing a book for pedagogical purposes

It could be better

It gives you some idea of blitz repertoire preparation, but quick simply. Like most of chess books, a short chapter of theoretical explanation then endless of games analysis, move by move, piece by piece. You will soon lose yourself in different challenges during chess game, and forget you're reading a blitz chess opening repertoire book. The Alekhine Defence is a good choice for blitz open as black (the major topic of this book), but I would rather like to read the GAMBIT book "Play the Alekhine" written by Valentin Bogdanov, to learn this opening with more detail opening knowledge.
